Chapter 33 - Chapter 33: Trials of the Primordial Artifact

The sun had barely risen over the Outer Sect's peaks, painting the stone pathways in warm golds and muted shadows. Lui Yan stood in the secluded courtyard reserved for advanced training, the Primordial Artifact hovering before him in a faint golden aura. Its hum resonated deep within his chest, a subtle but insistent reminder of the power he now wielded.

"You need focus," Yan Mei said softly, stepping beside him. "The artifact responds not just to strength, but to clarity of mind."

Lui Yan nodded, closing his eyes and letting the morning breeze wash over him. He could feel the artifact's energy pulsing in rhythm with his own qi - like two hearts synchronizing across space and time.

Lin Yumo leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "I don't know how you do it. I can barely keep my formations stable without tripping over my own feet, and you're talking to a glowing artifact like it's your best friend."

Lui Yan opened one eye, smirking faintly. "It isn't just glowing. It's alive in a way… it listens, and it teaches. But only if you're ready to learn."

Yan Mei tilted her head. "You're pushing yourself again."

"I have to," he said firmly. "The figure yesterday… that wasn't a random encounter. Someone powerful is watching. Someone who knows about the artifact."

Lin Yumo whistled softly. "Sounds ominous. Can't wait to meet them… or not."

The day passed in a blur of practice. Lui Yan tested the artifact's subtle energies, trying to refine the flow of qi through herbs and elixirs. He experimented with combining elemental spirits into medicinal concoctions, each attempt pushing the limits of his Nascent Soul peak cultivation.

Elder Hua Yun appeared mid-afternoon, observing silently from the doorway. "Your focus is strong," she remarked, voice calm yet carrying authority. "But remember: power without understanding is like fire without control. One mistake, and the consequences can be disastrous."

"I understand, Elder," Lui Yan replied, bowing respectfully.

She nodded once. "Good. I will leave you to your exercises, but keep the Primordial Artifact close. Others may be drawn to its power. Always be vigilant."

Her words lingered in his mind, adding a layer of caution to the excitement of discovery. He had grown stronger, but the world beyond the courtyard was already beginning to shift.

-

Meanwhile, Chen Wuying watched from a secluded vantage point, his gaze sharp and calculating. He had followed the glow of the artifact from afar, noting every movement, every subtle adjustment in Lui Yan's cultivation.

"An outer disciple… with a Primordial Artifact," he muttered, grinding his teeth. "This cannot be allowed. Power like that must be claimed or destroyed. And I will be the one to decide which."

He summoned a small black scroll from his robe, inscribed with hidden cultivation techniques and forbidden alchemy knowledge. "If I act carefully, I can manipulate events… perhaps even push Lui Yan to overextend himself. Then, his downfall will be mine to claim."

From the shadows, a second figure emerged - a disciple neither Lui Yan nor Chen Wuying had noticed before. Draped in grey robes, their face partially hidden by a hood, they whispered a warning:

"Do not underestimate the boy with the artifact. His potential… exceeds even your expectations."

Chen Wuying's eyes narrowed. "Who dares speak? Show yourself!"

The figure vanished like a shadow swallowed by dusk, leaving Chen Wuying alone with frustration gnawing at him. His rival was growing stronger, faster than anticipated, and now even unknown watchers had taken interest.

Lui Yan was not entirely alone. During the afternoon, Su Qingxue approached the courtyard silently, her sword sheathed but aura as calm and precise as ever.

"You train with fire," she said, her tone measured. "But fire can consume. Even with the artifact, you risk more than strength."

"I understand," Lui Yan said. "I want to control it… not let it control me."

Su Qingxue studied him for a moment, then handed him a small vial. The liquid shimmered faintly, infused with spiritual energy. "A temporary aid. It won't replace technique, but it will stabilize your qi if the artifact's resonance becomes too strong."

He accepted it with a nod. "Thank you."

Her gaze softened, almost imperceptibly. "Don't underestimate yourself. Others may challenge you… but you will be ready if you keep your mind sharp."

Her words lingered in his thoughts long after she left, a quiet reassurance in the growing tension of the Outer Sect.

As dusk approached, Lui Yan decided to push the artifact further. He set up a series of herbal distillation cauldrons, placing a variety of rare spiritual herbs in precise configurations. The goal was to refine an elixir that could amplify the energy of the artifact without overwhelming it - a delicate balance.

The first attempt ended in failure. A burst of unstable energy knocked over two cauldrons, the herbs scattering across the courtyard. The artifact pulsed with irritation, its golden light flickering.

"Calm," Lui Yan muttered to himself, taking a deep breath. "Focus on the flow, not the result."

He began again, this time letting the artifact guide his movements. Each motion became fluid, each calculation instinctive. Slowly, the herbs blended, the elixir stabilized, and a faint golden mist rose from the cauldron.

The artifact hummed approvingly. Lui Yan exhaled, the first true sense of harmony settling in his chest. He had begun to understand the delicate conversation between his qi and the artifact's power.

As night fell, the Outer Sect's lanterns glowed softly across the courtyard. Lui Yan, Yan Mei, and Lin Yumo sat quietly by the stone steps, watching the golden haze of the elixir swirl gently in the glass vial.

"You really are extraordinary," Yan Mei said softly, her voice carrying awe without words of exaggeration.

Lui Yan shook his head. "No. I just… I have to keep going. There are things coming that I can't ignore. The artifact… the figure yesterday… even Chen Wuying's jealousy… it's all warning me that the Outer Sect is no longer enough. I need to prepare."

Lin Yumo leaned back, smirking. "Well, at least we'll have front-row seats to your legendary rise. Can't wait for the Inner Sect to hear about this."

Lui Yan's eyes flicked toward the horizon, where distant peaks disappeared into shadows. The Primordial Artifact hummed softly at his side, a reminder that power alone was not enough. Strategy, allies, and vigilance would be the keys to surviving what was coming.

And Lui Yan was determined to meet it all head-on.
