Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Wang Raid

Dusk painted Qingyun City in crimson hues the following day when trouble finally boiled over.

Lin Chen and Su Qingyao were in the rear garden, practicing dual cultivation—his dragon qi gently nurturing her Ice Spirit body. Frost and faint gold intertwined, harmonious and beautiful.

A servant rushed in, pale. "Young Master! Wang family forces at the gates—Young Master Wang Teng leads twenty men, demanding 'justice' for yesterday's spar!"

Lin Zhantian mobilized guards immediately. The family assembled in the main courtyard.

Wang Teng stood outside the open gates, flanked by Wang retainers—several Early Innate, others Postnatal elites. His face bruised from yesterday, eyes burning.

"Lin Chen!" he shouted. "Come out! You injured me publicly—today, settle it privately, or the Wang family declares feud!"

Lin Zhantian stepped forward. "Young Master Wang, this is excessive. A friendly spar—"

"Friendly?" Wang Teng sneered. "He humiliated me before the city! And for what? Hoarding Miss Su like treasure!"

His gaze fixed past the gates, spotting Su Qingyao beside Lin Chen. Greed flashed openly. "Miss Su, why tie yourself to a small clan? Come with me—the Wang family offers resources, status, everything!"

Su Qingyao's voice was ice. "My heart is with Lin Chen. Leave."

Wang Teng laughed madly. "Heart? In this world, strength decides! Men—take her!"

Chaos erupted. Wang retainers charged.

Lin guards met them, clashes ringing. Lin Zhantian engaged Wang Patriarch's deputy.

Lin Chen shielded Su Qingyao. "Stay behind me."

Wang Teng rushed straight for her, serpent claws aiming to snatch.

Lin Chen intercepted. Dragon soul fully unleashed this time.

Roar!

Golden dragon shadow manifested briefly—a claw swatting Wang Teng aside like a fly.

He crashed into a wall, bones cracking.

Retainers faltered. Lin Chen advanced, dragon might pressuring all.

One by one, he dismantled them—precise strikes disabling without killing. Dragon Emperor body made him untouchable.

Wang Teng rose shakily. "You... monster!"

Lin Chen loomed over him. "Monster? You coveted what is mine. Touch her again, and I end your bloodline."

A final palm sent Wang Teng flying out the gates.

The Wang forces fled in panic.

Lin estate stood victorious, minor injuries only.

As night fell, Lin Zhantian addressed the family. "The Wangs are broken for now. But this draws eyes from larger powers."

Lin Chen nodded. "Time to leave for Tianxuan Sect sooner."

In the plum garden, Su Qingyao bandaged a small cut on his hand—though it healed instantly.

"You didn't have to hold back," she said softly.

"I did—for the family's sake. But if they come again..." His eyes hardened.

She embraced him. "I know. And I'm not afraid—with you."

Under moonlight, they shared a deeper kiss, bond strengthened by the trial.

Qingyun City's balance shifted permanently. The Lin name rose; whispers of the dragon youth spread farther.

But greater horizons called.

The days after the street clash unfolded like a slow exhale for the Lin family—one of cautious relief mixed with the buzz of newfound purpose. Qingyun City's streets hummed with retellings of the event: how the Lin young master had stood alone against Wang raiders, his movements fluid and unstoppable, like a dragon toying with serpents. Exaggerations grew with each telling—some claimed golden scales had flashed on his skin, others swore a dragon's roar had shaken the air. Merchants adjusted prices favorably for Lin goods; minor clan heads sent discreet gifts, probing for alliance. Even former Zhao allies, sensing the shift, offered quiet olive branches.

The Lin estate itself felt transformed. Servants moved with lighter steps, humming old family songs long forgotten. Guards stood taller at their posts, pride in their eyes. In the medicine hall, healers tended the few minor wounds from the skirmish—bruises, shallow cuts—while recounting their roles with animated gestures. "I blocked three at once!" one boasted. "But it was the Young Master's presence that broke their spirit."

Lin Zhantian called daily councils in the main hall, maps and ledgers spread across the table. Elders debated resource allocation: bolstering defenses, expanding trade routes now that Wang influence waned. "We've turned the tide," the patriarch said one morning, voice firm. "But tides turn again without vigilance. Double patrols. Inventory spirit stones—we'll need them for the journey to Tianxuan Sect."

Lin Chen contributed thoughtfully, suggesting subtle array enhancements using his dragon qi traces—nothing flashy, just enough to deter sneak attacks. His father watched him with quiet awe. "You've grown beyond what I imagined, Chen'er. Not just in strength, but wisdom."

Su Qingyao handled much of the internal coordination: scheduling servant rotations, overseeing herb gardens for travel supplies, even organizing small feasts to boost morale. Her Ice Spirit aura brought a cool, calming presence to heated discussions. Disciples trailed her for advice, especially the girls. "Big Sister, how do you stay so composed?" Lin Xue asked during a break in the herb fields.

Su Qingyao smiled gently, kneeling to pluck a frost-resistant leaf. "Composure comes from knowing who's beside you. And from practice—breathe deep, let qi flow like still water."

Mornings belonged to training. The grounds filled before dawn: over sixty disciples now, from wide-eyed children to determined adults. Lin Chen led warm-ups, then split groups. Beginners focused on body forging—stances, breathing. Intermediates practiced essence gathering. Advanced sparred under his watchful eye.

"Power without control is chaos," he reminded during a demonstration, executing a palm strike that sent a controlled gust whipping leaves without harming nearby youths. Faint dragon qi shimmered, inspiring gasps.

Lin Feng, sweating but grinning, stepped forward for correction. "Young Master, my circulation—it's stuck here." He pointed to his dantian.

Lin Chen placed a hand on the boy's shoulder, guiding qi gently. "Relax. Imagine a river, not a dammed flood."

Breakthrough followed—a small one, but cheers erupted. The yard felt alive with progress.

Afternoons shifted to personal cultivation. Lin Chen meditated beneath the old plum tree, dragon soul circulating the Nine Revolutions art. Strength consolidated steadily; Late Innate felt solid, edges sharpening toward peak. Su Qingyao joined often, their qi harmonizing—his warm gold threading her cool frost. Dual practice deepened bonds and cultivation alike.

One such afternoon, as leaves drifted lazily, she rested against him. "The disciples look at you like a legend now. But I remember the boy who climbed this tree for plum blossoms."

He chuckled, arm around her waist. "And the girl who couldn't reach the highest ones. Some things don't change."

She turned, eyes soft. "Others do. You're stronger, but still... you. Gentle when it matters."

Their lips met briefly, sweetly. Moments like these anchored him amid rising responsibilities.

Evenings brought family meals—long tables groaning under spirit rice, roasted beast meat, herb soups. Laughter echoed: elders reminiscing glory days, cousins teasing breakthroughs, children wide-eyed at stories of Lin Chen's clash.

Lin Xue performed a new ice form she'd adapted from Su Qingyao's guidance, earning applause. "One day, I'll protect the family too!"

Lin Zhantian raised a cup. "To our future—in Qingyun and beyond."

Toasts followed, warmth filling the hall.

Later, in private, Lin Chen and his father walked the moonlit paths. "The Wangs are quiet," Lin Zhantian said. "Too quiet. Scouts report internal arguments—Wang Teng pushing aggression, Patriarch hesitating."

Lin Chen nodded. "They're weighing costs. Defeat stings pride, but survival matters more."

"True. But pride blinds. Watch for indirect strikes—poisoned gifts, false rumors."

"I am. And preparing counters."

Father clasped his shoulder. "I'm proud, son. Your mother... she'd smile seeing this."

Emotion stirred—the original body's filial warmth. "We'll honor her by rising higher."

Scouts brought minor news nightly: Wang retainers drilling secretly, rumors sown in markets claiming Lin Chen's bloodline "unstable, risky to ally." Subtle erosion attempts.

Lin Chen countered quietly—public demonstrations of stable power, generous aid to neutral clans. Support grew.

One evening under the plum tree, Su Qingyao voiced worry. "These shadows... they remind me of darker times."

He pulled her close. "Shadows flee light. We'll shine brighter—at the sect."

She nestled in. "Together."

Peace held—for now.
