The Flying Thunder God Technique is the crown jewel of Space-Time Ninjutsu. Its complexity far exceeds that of ordinary elemental releases, requiring not just extraordinary spatial perception but a level of chakra control that has reached the absolute pinnacle.
As the distance of teleportation increases, the chakra consumption grows exponentially; even a slight lapse in concentration could result in the user being lost in the void. Created by the Second Hokage and perfected by the Fourth, it was the technique that had once made the world tremble at the name of the "Yellow Flash."
Naruto had been obsessively studying the formulas Kurama had memorized from the Scroll of Seals. However, despite two weeks of grueling mental and physical practice, he still hadn't found the rhythm. Either his coordinate positioning was off, or his chakra output spiked too violently. In his most dangerous attempt, he had nearly warped half of his bedroom into another dimension.
"I really can't rush this," Naruto muttered, wiping sweat from his brow as he looked at the incomplete Uzumaki-crested mark he had carved into the floor. He knew he had the talent, but this was a technique that demanded perfection.
Later that morning, Team 7 arrived at the Hokage Office. To Naruto's surprise, Asuma Sarutobi and the new generation of Ino–Shika–Chō were already there. The presence of two teams indicated a massive shift in mission priority.
"Kakashi, you're here," the Third Hokage said, his office thick with the scent of tobacco.
"Sandaime-sama, why have we been summoned together?" Kakashi asked, his eye narrowing.
"There has been a complication," the Sandaime replied, his expression grave as he unfurled a mission scroll now marked with a crimson A-rank. "Three days ago, Team 8 accepted a C-rank escort mission. However, the client, Tazuna, concealed the true nature of the threat. They are currently being hunted by Zabuza Momochi, one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist."
The room went cold. Even the Genin knew that name—the "Demon of the Hidden Mist."
"Team 8 is in a precarious position," Hiruzen continued. "I am merging Team 7 and Team 10 into a support unit. Your mission is to reinforce Team 8 and, if possible, eliminate Zabuza. Kakashi, you are the captain. Asuma, you are vice-captain."
"Is this appropriate?" Kakashi frowned. "Zabuza is an elite rogue. These Genin are still fresh."
"Some young eagles must experience the storm before they can soar," the Sandaime said slowly. "Reinforcing Team 8 is the priority. I believe in their growth."
Upon hearing that Team 8—and specifically Kurenai Yuhi—was in danger, Asuma's composure shattered. The cigarette between his fingers fell to the floor, forgotten.
"Kakashi, if you don't have the confidence, then stay behind," Asuma snapped, his voice thick with anxiety. He turned and stormed out of the office, his usual laid-back demeanor replaced by a raw, desperate urgency.
Shikamaru sighed softly. He had never seen his teacher lose his cool like this. He, Ino, and Choji exchanged worried glances, knowing exactly what Kurenai-sensei meant to their mentor.
"Asuma, wait!" Kakashi called out, before turning to the Hokage. "We accept. We're departing immediately."
The two teams turned into a blur of shadows, darting across the rooftops of Konoha. Once past the gates, Asuma pushed himself to a suicidal pace, leaping through the branches like a man possessed.
"Asuma, you need to conserve your stamina!" Kakashi shouted, but the wind swallowed his words.
"Damn it, let's keep up," Kakashi commanded. The group pushed their limits, weaving through the dense foliage.
Shikamaru, ever the analyst, spoke while sprinting. "At this pace, we'll reach the Land of Waves by morning, but we'll be too exhausted to fight."
"Then we'll take turns leading," Sasuke suggested, his Sharingan glinting. "We'll use the draft to keep the overall speed high."
Naruto didn't just lead; he became the team's engine. As the trek entered its final hours, Naruto's terrifying endurance became apparent. To save time and energy for the others, he began carrying his teammates.
By the time they reached the damp, misty shores of the Land of Waves the next morning, Naruto landed lightly on a reef, his breathing as steady as if he had just taken a stroll. On his back sat a stunned Choji, while he held a dazed Ino in his arms.
"Naruto... how are you not tired?" Sakura gasped, leaning on her knees and struggling for air.
Shikamaru wiped the sweat from his eyes, looking at his blond friend with a mix of awe and realization. "It seems," he panted, "that during our sparring sessions at the Academy, Naruto wasn't using even half of his real strength."
Naruto set his friends down and looked into the thick mist ahead. "Save the questions for later. We have a Demon to find."
