Chapter 32 - Growth

(Pov Kenjaku)

As the door to the domain opened and closed, I could already tell they had failed in their attack. It had been predictable that Jogo had too high an opinion of his own strength, thinking he could take on either of the Gojo brothers. Though I hadn't expected his death, it wasn't something that could be accounted for, though it would be very annoying, mostly due to Hanami and Dagon, as those three had always been oddly close for cursed spirits. At least it had only been one of them; if more had been killed, especially Dagon, things would have gotten much more complicated.

I still had my most important component, and I had gotten truly lucky that such a curse had been born recently. Mahito, a cursed spirit born from the fear of other humans, was powerful due to his unique technique, Idle Transfiguration. This technique allowed Mahito to freely manipulate his own soul, negating any damage to his physical form, but it also allowed him to manipulate the souls of any other beings he made contact with, and when the time was right, this ability could be used to activate the abilities locked away in so many people. I would need to keep a close eye on Mahito, though the curse was rather unpredictable, and with his power controlling him wouldn't be easy. It was times like this that I wondered at how easy it would be to kill Geto Suguru and use his Cursed Spirit Manipulation, but at this point, that would be inviting my own death, given how well guarded Geto was, not to mention his best friend was Gojo Satoru.

Though Mahito would be going out soon, there were indications that one of Sukuna's fingers showed up, and he was going after it along with his general desire to cause issues for humans. As human as Mahito may look, there was no denying he was the very definition of a curse.

(Pov Satoshi)

After killing Jogo, I made my way back to the school much more quickly than before, as I wanted to let Satoru know about the attack. It wasn't likely they would attack again, not so soon after losing one of their own, but I couldn't just sit on the information either, especially if they still went through with the attack during the goodwill event. I also needed to check in with Yuji and his training because if I had my timeline right, then Mahito would soon get active, resulting in Yuji and Nanami being sent to investigate. I couldn't get directly involved with that mission, given my teaching obligations, so once again, things would be cut rather close. It was something I found rather annoying about the story events; they all happened very close together, hell, the entire main story took place over just six months from June to December.

As I made my way back to the school, I took a detour down to the hidden room that Satoru was using to hide Yuji, and once I was inside, I saw them both watching an old movie about some nameless ronin in a town with two gangs.

"Am I interrupting?" I asked

"Gojo-Sensei, you're bac-ahh!" Yuji started before being punched by the small, cursed corpse in his hands.

"Hey, little bro, how was the yelling?" Satoru asked while munching on popcorn; he was still wearing the blindfold, too, for some reason, even while looking at the screen.

"It was fine, Satoru, though on the way back, I got ambushed by a couple of curses. I got one of them, but the other two escaped." I responded, grabbing a drink from a nearby box.

"You think they'll come back?"

"Yeah, but not now, we've got some time before then. I just needed to tell you, and I wanted to check up on Yuji's training."

Yuji jumped back up at the mention of his name. "Gojo-Sensei, your brother has been teaching me how to control my cursed energy." He said with excitement in his voice.

He picked the cursed corpse back up, and after a moment, it went to sleep in his hands. "See, when I pass my energy through it, the doll sleeps, and if I lose focus, it punches me, and I've kept it asleep for hours now."

I could tell even without my own cursed energy that Yuji had gotten more control over his. It was odd sensing cursed energy with none of my own. If I focused enough, I could feel their energy. It felt like they had static coming from their body very tingly. It would be good for him to get as strong as possible if we wanted to defeat Mahito and save Junpei. It would also be good to get to see Nanami again after so long. Given my involvement in the school, I was usually too busy to meet up with him when he was around, but I would get to on this upcoming mission.

I couldn't stick around this little basement forever, though I needed to check on my other students as well and make sure they were also getting stronger. So I left Yuji and Satoru to their movie and went to find Megumi and Nobara, though that would have to wait until the morning; children need their sleep after all.

The next morning, I once again set out to find the students when I ran into my second-year students. It was Maki, Mai, Toge, and Panda Yuta. Unfortunately, Yuta was still off recovering. Rika, I had also sent him to find Miguel Oduol, as his strength and cursed tool, the Black Rope, would be incredibly useful, and since he never fought Satoru, he didn't hold any personal grudges.

"Hey, guys, what are you doing over here?" I asked, as the second year had its own areas for training and daily lessons.

"Hey, Satoshi, we heard about what happened with the new first year and wanted to check on the others," Panda said before leaning closer. "Maki kind of put her foot in her mouth, though."

"I said I was sorry, stop bringing it up!" Maki shouted, smacking Panda on the head.

"Maki?" I asked, giving her a look as she tried to avoid my gaze before giving up and looking defeated.

"I may have brought up their dead friend, not knowing he was dead." She mumbled, looking at the ground.

I had to do my best to stop from laughing at her expression, especially since I should also be sad about the supposed death of my student. Instead, I gave her hair its usual ruffle before moving on towards the location of Megumi and Nobara. Finally, I managed to find them, though it wasn't just them, as standing before them were Todo Aoi and the two Hasaba twins. Despite the goodwill event still being about a month off, it was standard for some students to arrive early, or at least it was for Todo, given his eccentricities. Speaking of his special methods, it seems that Todo had already asked his favorite question about whether the lack of a shirt was any indication.

As Todo rushed to begin beating up Megumi for his boring taste in women, I ran over using my leg to trip him up before any damage could be done. He got up quickly, and when he saw me, his face broke out in a large smile. "Satoshi-San, your students are incredibly boring. Where's Okkotsu?" He said, as ever since the last goodwill event, Todo had been itching to fight against Yuta.

"He's still not here. Todo now, please stop trying to beat up my students." I said, patting him on the back before turning to the twins.

"Hey, you two its been a while. How's Suguru doing these days?" I asked them if the two girls had always been very polite children, very unlike my own rather outspoken twins.

"Hey, Uncle Satoshi dad's doing great. He's going to be here for the goodwill event, too." Nanako said while Mimiko nodded.

In all the excitement about the upcoming fight with Mahito, I had kind of forgotten about the goodwill event, one that would be very different from the previous years, and not only because of the change in location due to our previous victory. There were more players on each side this time, not to mention the likely intervention of Hanami and potentially others aligned with their group. It was quite a lot, but I was feeling excited about it. I enjoyed seeing the growth of my students as they became proper sorcerers, and this was the best opportunity for them to show off their full skills.
