Chapter 39 - CHAPTER THIRTY NINE: YOU WILL DIG YOUR OWN GRAVE.

She stepped into the company building, and everything felt… the same, yet not.

Hanryeon Tech was clean and sharp, all glass walls and muted colors, the kind of place where footsteps sounded too loud and everyone moved with purpose. Screens glowed quietly.

Keyboards clicked in neat rhythms. Order lived here.

And yet—

Whispers rippled the moment Ji-Ah appeared.

"Why is she here?"

"I thought she left, She was fired."

"Didn't something happen?"

Ji-Ah walked on, back straight, grip firm on her bag.

"Ji-Ah."

Soo-Min hurried over, eyes bright with relief. "You're back?. How have you been?"

"I'm okay," Ji-Ah said. "Really."

Before Soo-Min could say more, a familiar voice cut through the space.

"Mrs. Park."

Seo-Jun stood beside them, composed as ever. "Please come with me. You need to sign the papers."

Ji-Ah nodded. "Alright."

She turned to Soo-Min. "I'll see you later."

They walked down the quieter hallway toward Ha-Joon's office. The farther they went, the heavier the air felt.

Seo-Jun slowed. "You're wondering why you were called in."

She nodded.

"Do-Hea is coming today," he said.

Her steps faltered slightly. "Do-Hea?"

"Yes. The boss plans to give him the shares."

Ji-Ah stopped. "Give?"

Seo-Jun met her gaze. "Officially, it will look like a smooth transition. Unofficially…" He smiled faintly.

"It's strategy."

"And me?" she asked.

"You're part of the presentation," he replied calmly. "Boss wants you there."

She exhaled slowly. "So he's pretending to hand everything over."

"For now."

She muttered under her breath, "That man really enjoys stress."

Seo-Jun chuckled. "Even if he seems cold, he's actually kind."

Ji-Ah glanced toward Ha-Joon's office door. "…In a very complicated way."

Seo-Jun nodded. "Exactly."

Inside, the company hummed on, unaware that by the end of the day, nothing would feel quite as stable as it looked.

They reached the office door.

Ji-Ah stopped.

Seo-Jun walked in first, already greeting someone inside, unaware she wasn't following.

Ji-Ah slowly turned around.

At the far end of the hallway stood Do-Yoon.

She looked pale. Irritated. Confused. Like someone who had walked into a scene that no longer belonged to her.

"What are you doing here?" Do-Yoon demanded.

Ji-Ah didn't reply.

She smiled instead.

A small, calm smile.

Then she lifted her hand and waved.

Do-Yoon stiffened. That smile wasn't weakness. It wasn't anger. It was confidence.

Ji-Ah turned back and entered the office.

Behind her, Do-Yoon pulled out her phone and typed furiously.

Ha-Joon looked up from his desk the moment Ji-Ah stepped in.

Perfect suit. Hair neatly styled. Cold professionalism locked firmly in place.

"Sit," he said.

She did.

"How's your foot?" he asked, blunt.

"Still attached," she replied. "So… better."

A pause.

Then she asked, "Why am I here?"

Ha-Joon stood and moved toward the window.

"When you went to Hanryeon Foods," he said, "Do-Hea didn't go there."

She frowned. "Then where did he—"

"He came here," Ha-Joon continued. "Straight to the company. Claimed he heard you were fired."

Ji-Ah blinked. "Wow. Fast gossip."

"He demanded the shares," Ha-Joon added. "Threatened to sue the company if he didn't get them."

"And you let him think he would," she said slowly.

He turned back to her.

"You figured that out already?"

She shrugged. "You don't panic. You perform."

Seo-Jun smiled faintly. "We also have proof. CCTV footage. Recorded conversations. Kai-Wen. Do-Yoon. Everything."

Ji-Ah nodded. "So you're letting Do-Hea walk into his own trap."

Ha-Joon looked at her for a moment longer than necessary.

"…You're sharper than I expected," he said.

She raised an eyebrow. "Is that a compliment?"

"Yes," he replied immediately. "Don't get used to it."

Seo-Jun cleared his throat, amused.

Ji-Ah leaned back slightly. "If they're exposed, will they be fired?"

Ha-Joon paused.

"That depends," he said. "Do-Yoon is well known here. Hye-Rin has years in this company. People don't act without reasons."

She nodded. Then quietly asked, "Will I be rehired?"

Ha-Joon met her gaze.

"Your desk was never cleared," he said. "And your ID was never deactivated."

She stared.

"That's your answer," he added.

Ji-Ah smiled.

---

Do-Yoon stepped into Hye-Rin's office without knocking.

Hye-Rin was fixing her hair in the reflection of her computer screen, fingers smoothing it back with careful precision.

"She's back," Do-Yoon said.

Hye-Rin's hand paused mid-motion.

Her fingers tightened around a strand of hair before she slowly let it fall. She blinked once.

Then again.

Her lips twitched, the corner of her mouth pulling slightly before settling into something unreadable.

"…I expected that," she muttered.

Do-Yoon moved forward, anger simmering. "You knew she'd come back?"

"People like Park Ji-Ah don't disappear quietly," Hye-Rin replied, still calm. "They linger."

Hye-Rin leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms. A loose strand of hair slipped from behind her ear. She didn't bother fixing it.

"This is your fault," Hye-Rin continued coolly. "Why did you tell Kai-Wen?"

Do-Yoon's eyes widened. "I had to."

"You didn't have to," Hye-Rin snapped. "You talk too much. That's your problem."

"Kai-Wen is my friend," Do-Yoon said, voice shaking. "He's been there since the beginning."

Hye-Rin laughed softly, twisting the pen between her fingers. "Friend? You handed him the whole plan like a bedtime story."

Do-Yoon swallowed. "You promised me."

Hye-Rin's smile faded. "I promised results."

"You said if I worked with Do-Hea," Do-Yoon said, stepping closer, "I'd get more money. I could pay for my mom's treatment. And Ji-Ah would be out. Gone. Forever."

Hye-Rin stood up slowly. She smoothed the front of her blazer, fixing the loose strand of hair as if the conversation bored her.

"But you didn't work," she said flatly. "You hesitated. You panicked. And now Ji-Ah is back."

The words sliced deep.

Do-Yoon's breath hitched. Her shoulders stiffened, like something inside her had shattered all at once.

"So… I get nothing?" she whispered.

Hye-Rin shrugged. "That's how deals work."

Silence.

Then Do-Yoon straightened.

"One day," she said, voice low and shaking, "you'll dig your own grave."

Hye-Rin smirked, eyes cold. "Make sure you're not standing in it with me."

Do-Yoon turned sharply, her hair swinging around her shoulders as she walked out, footsteps heavy and uneven.

Hye-Rin watched the door close, exhaled slowly, and sighed.

"Tiresome," she murmured.

Her hair was still perfect.
