Chapter 2 - Chapter One - The Game of Life Continues

MC POV

"Motherfucker!" is the first word that slips out of my mouth as I wake up with what feels like a massive hangover.

"Isamu you're awake, thank God!- WAIT WHO TAUGHT YOU THAT WORD YOUNG MAN!" a voice that feels familiar and unfamiliar to me suddenly yelled in my ears.

My eyes snapped open.

The first thing I see is a white light along with the intense smell of bleach entering my nose.

I groaned and slapped a hand over my eyes.

"Jesus...big sis, stop yelling or I swear I'll die again," I grumbled before stopping in place.

Big sis? What the hell last time I checked I was an only child? Also since when the fuck could I suddenly speak Japanese?!

The yelling stopped.

"...Isamu?" the woman said her tone now suddenly lowered compared to before "are you really alright?"

I slowly lowered my hand from my eyes letting myself readjust to everything again.

The white light resolved into a ceiling panel. The smell of bleach was still there but this time my nose could faintly pick up the scent of sanitizer as well.

I turned my head and there was the owner of the voice who had just been yelling at me.

A young teenager sat on a folding chair pulled up close to the bed. Her eyes and hair were a light brown color. While her attire consisted of an unzipped blue jacket, a orange shirt with black stripes, dark blue jeans, and a pair of brown sandals.

Taiga Fujimura.

My brain supplied the name instantly like it had always been there.

Suddenly it felt like something just clicked inside of my head.

My name is Isamu Fujimura, age seven, Taiga's little cousin, orphaned early, was raised by Gramps and big sis Taiga, and had just suddenly collapsed in the middle of dinner.

With that information came a multitude of feelings like embarrassment, affection, and love.

These weren't the memories of a 25-year-old man and yet they were.

My breath hitched.

More information suddenly just dumped itself into my head. This one belonged to neither Isamu or my original self but rather of that Daemon I had assimilated after beating it in a bet.

The entity was a lesser true Daemon.

Not a shade, imitation, or one shackled by human ideation.

This world I found myself in was one shared with various supernatural entities such as Dead Apostles, Magi, Individuals of the Church, Spirits, and so much more.

The 'magic' system of this world worked if you first possessed a series of pseudo-nerves called magic circuits.

Then they can reenact 'mystery' by connecting to an existing foundation to execute their spells.

True Daemons apparently didn't need any of that. Apparently they were naturally born with a selective amount of demonic energy that could be grown in various ways.

Every cell, impulse, and fragment of their consciousness were already aligned towards whatever mystery they so desired, shaped, or most connected with.

Heck what they did couldn't even be considered 'magecraft' and more so leaned towards a pseudo-form of 'true magic.'

In summary I still physically retained the appearance of a human but my soul transcended into a hybrid mix of both human and a true lesser Daemon.

Daemons had different rankings to them that are mainly based on the sin they represent, the amount of demonic energy they have, and the abilities they might possess from the connection to their sin.

"...Isamu?" Taiga suddenly leaned forward, concern deepening "you've been staring off into space for awhile. Should I call a nurse?"

I swallowed my throat felt really dry and my thoughts were a complete mess "nah I am good big sis," I said, automatically pitching my voice higher "I'm...just really thirsty that's all."

I was still so disoriented from the amount of information in my head and that wasn't even the end of it.

The Daemon's knowledge was a lot bigger.

The Root.

Akasha.

The Counter Force.

Gaia.

Taiga exhaled in relief and slumped back into her chair "you scared the hell out of me, you know that? Just collapsing like that so suddenly..."

Her hand reached out, rough fingers brushing my hair.

Something twisted in my chest, sharp and unfamiliar.

I see so...this is what I missed out on, I distantly thought.

"Well I'm okay now big sis," I said, more firmly this time "promise."

She studied me with suspicion in her gaze and then snorted "you better be young man, now I am going to go get you a cup of water. After that we're going to have a long talk about where you learned that bad word, young man. I won't have you turning into a delinquent you hear me," she lectured.

A scoff escapes my lips "this coming from the woman who practically invented delinquency," I mutter the words slipping out before I can stop myself.

Taiga freezes mid-stand.

Slowly very slowly she turns her head back toward me.

"What," she says pleasantly, too pleasantly, "did you just say?"

Ah....I feel a sudden sense of danger.

I gave the most bright innocent smile that I could muster "I mean-!" I scramble fake pitching my voice even higher, hands clutching the blanket, "I heard it on TV! You know, like those bad guys with the pompadours and motorcycles! They talk like that all the time!"

She squinted at me in suspicion before she sighed, rubbing the bridge of her nose. "Unbelievable... I leave you alone with Gramps and the guys. Now you're talking back to me like some kind of middle school punk."

Grumbling under her breath Taiga turned and left to go get some water.

I remained quiet for a bit before letting out a chuckle "hehe so the game of life isn't quite over for me yet," I muttered while clenching my hand into a fist "this world is really interesting I can almost feel a spark of my fever igniting."

Experimentally I reached out to where the center of my newfound demonic energy was and channeled it through my left fist.

Energy of both black and blue circulated around it, much different to the black and purple one the original Daemon had.

"It's only a damn shame that bum of a Daemon didn't have many techniques. Seriously all this idiot ever did was use his power to fire off energy beams and eat stray souls to increase his power," I said with a snort.

Talk about wasted potential.

I loosened my grip and the black-and-blue energy dispersed like smoke, sinking back into me as if it had never existed.

"The power of a true Daemon is mainly defined by the sin they embody the most. The one that I took in was certainly Gluttony but if I had to say which sin I most align with. Then it would have to be Greed with a possible lesser connection to Desire," I murmured.

I was both of these things because I've always wanted more risk, more pressure, more of those razor-thin moments right before it becomes locked in.

Yet...my mind flashes back to how there was no one by my side as I laid on the street dying.

Now though I wanted more than just the rush.

More than the gamble.

I wanted someone to be there when the cards flipped win or lose. Someone to laugh, to curse, to slam the table with me. Someone to make the fever mean something beyond just another hit.

My fingers curled slowly against the thin hospital blanket.

"...Guess that's the real bet this time," I muttered under my breath.

The door to my room opens as both Taiga and a nurse enter.

The nurse is a woman in her late twenties, hair tucked neatly under a cap, and clipboard hugged to her chest.

She gives me a practiced smile that all nurses generally have "good morning, Isamu," she says gently "how are we feeling today?"

Taiga hands me a paper cup filled with water before answering for me "he collapsed in the middle of dinner. So you tell me?" she says flatly.

I weakly took the cup with both hands and sipping slowly. The water was cool as it slid down my throat getting rid of the dryness "sis be nice to the nurse. I am fine now so stop being such a worrywort," I admonished.

The nurse chuckles softly and steps closer shining a small light into my eyes "any dizziness? Nausea? Headache?"

I pause.

Physically? I feel...fine actually maybe even better than fine.

I felt amazing actually "nope," I say truthfully, "just thirsty and a bit tired but that's all."

She hums, jotting something down "well your vitals are stable, no fever, and your bloodwork came back normal too. Which is...interesting considering what happened."

Taiga raises an eyebrow "interesting how?"

"Well," the nurse says carefully, "children don't usually just collapse without a cause. But there's no sign of anemia, no infection, no neurological irregularities. It's almost like his body just...shut off for a moment."

I stiffen, just a little.

The nurse kneels slightly so she's eye level with me "do you remember anything before you collapsed, Isamu? Dizziness? Pain? Anything at all?"

I shake my head "not really it kind of just happened...I am not really sure how to explain it."

She studies my face for a moment longer, then straightens "alright I'd like to keep him for observation a bit longer, but if nothing changes he should be fine to go home later today."

Taiga exhales sharply, relief pouring out of her like air from a punctured tire "thank God Gramps was about ready to start a prayer circle."

The nurse smiled, "kids are resilient sometimes more than we realize."

Heh if only she knew.
