Eden Prime

Jogging towards the last reported sight of the beacon, Alenko couldn't help but notice that the Commander's rifle wasn't the standard issue, and it certainly wasn't any model he recognized.

It was a black rifle, with a long, narrow barrel, a long range scope, and what appeared to be a long magazine, similar to pre mass effect sniper rifles, though Alenko didn't think the Commander would use something so outdated.

"Commander, I have never seen that kind of rifle before, is it custom made?" He asked, following Shepard as they scanned the perimeter.

"Oh, you are about to see what it is really soon, Kaidan."

Something in Commander Shepard's tone, and the terrifying grin, told the lieutenant it was going to be something he won't forget any time soon.

Further ahead, they detected three drones, and the Commander signed them to stop. Taking his rifle, the N7 inspected the drones, decided they were the enemy since it wasn't a make he was familiar with and pulled the trigger.

Three red beams lashed out, one after the other blowing the drones up.

Kaidan, if he wasn't in a battlefield and too alert, would definitely be shocked by the casual use of a fucking laser rifle, which was, as far as he knew, only possible as anti-missile and fighter systems on dreadnoughts, not as a rifle.

"Commander, you have a laser rifle?"

"Yep, made it myself, now, let's go ladies, I want that beacon, and I want it now."

Kaidan might have kept his focus, but Jenkins did not, and was looking at the Commander with his mouth open, waiting to catch a mass effect round. He shook the corporal, and they followed the Commander again.

Destroying a couple more drones on the way, the Alliance marines moved through the battlefield Eden Prime had become. Hearing gunfire, they stopped, watching as a marine in a white and red light armor shooting at synthetics.

Two red beams from Shepard's laser rifle put holes through the robots, dropping them down.

The marine, startled, turned and pointed her rifle at them, lowering upon seeing they were Alliance.

"Thanks for your help, Commander. I didn't think I was going to make it." The marine said, trying to get her breathing under control.

"Commander Shepard, Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams of the 212." She stood at attention, realizing just who came to the rescue of the colony.

"You alright, Williams? What the hell happened here?"

"Nothing serious, sir. Others weren't so lucky. We were patrolling the perimeter when the attack hit. We tried to get off a distress call, but they cut off our communications. I've been fighting for my life ever since."

"Any intel on what those tin cans are?"

"I think they're Geth, sir."

"Geth haven't been seen outside the veil for nearly 200 years. Why are they here now?"

"The beacon, obviously, which means we gotta double time it. Feeling good enough to fight, Chief?"

"Aye, aye sir. It's time for payback. The dig site is close, just over that rise. The beacon might still be there."

"Let's move."

Moving ahead to the dig site, four Geth units were stationed ahead, and Shepard knew just what to do.

"The one at the back, I am going to put it in stasis, don't shoot."

"Yes sir." The three marines replied, as Commander Shepard always had a plan in their eyes.

Three laser beams later, they watched as Commander Shepard approached the final Geth hiding behind cover, waiting for it to come out.

Shepard fired a stasis, and the Geth moved out of the cover to fire, right in front of the biotic attack, freezing, and falling on its back.

Approaching it, Commander quickly activated his omni-tool and began to type away.

"Am I the only one feeling useless here, Chief, Lieutenant?" Jenkins asked, as he didn't even get to pull his trigger so far.

"No, you're not." Kaidan shook his head, in the same boat as the corporal.

"There we go." Shepard exclaimed, getting up as the stasis dissipated. The Geth laid on the ground for a couple more seconds, its flaps moving, before getting up and standing still, optics turned to Commander Shepard.

The synthetic raised its hands, as if to strike the Commander, and the marines raised their guns, aiming at it, before the Geth did something that baffled the marines.

Throwing its hands up, stomping on the ground, and twitching its head to the sides, the synthetic began to dance, a catchy music blaring from its voicebox, starting with the howling wolves.

"It's close to midnight, something evil's lurkin' in the dark." The Geth began to sing with its synthetic voice, accompanying the dance moves it was pulling off.

"What the fuck?" Ashley muttered. They tried hacking the Geth too, but after a couple of seconds they returned to normal, but to see one of them dance while singing a song?

"I call it the ravager virus, made it in case I needed to bring down a fleet or something."

The Geth was thrusting its pelvic area out now, still singing.

"It's going to spread through their comms, and we'll see if they are good enough to fight it." Shepard crossed his arms, appreciating the synthetic's dance.

Truly, Michael Jackson was a classic, too bad he was mostly forgotten by the humans.

"Cause this is thriller, thriller night, and no one's gonna save you from the beast about to strike." The Geth continued to dance, before Shepard thought he had given the virus enough time, and shot the synthetic.

"This is the dig site. The beacon was right here. It must have been moved." Ashley said, shaking her head at the absurdity.

"By whom? Our side? Or the Geth?"

"Hard to say. Maybe we'll know once we check out the research camp."

"Well, let's hope someone there is alive at the least." The commander said, turning around to head the indicated direction.

"Shepard, change of plans. There's a small space port up ahead. I want to check it out, I'll wait for you there. Hold on." The Spectre informed them, before stopping as he must have seen something.

"Shepard, the Geth are dancing, and singing. Any idea why?" Nihlus asked over the comms, his tone dry as a desert

"Just a little gift from me, I thought they looked too serious."

"I see." The line ended, with the Turian Spectre refusing to say anything else.

Climbing up the small ramp, they reached the research camp without problem, though the camp itself was on fire.

"Looks like they hit the camp hard." Ashley commented, while Kaidan warned about a possible ambush and suggested staying on guard to Chief Williams and Corporal Jenkins.

Ahead, there were what appeared to be humans, impaled on some sort of metal spikes through the chest.

"Oh, god! They are still alive!" Kaidan was shocked as one of the spikes came down, and the human, or at least what used to be a human, now covered in blue lines, white eyes and cables, came running at them like a zombie.

"What did the Geth do to them?" Ashley asked, anger creeping into her voice at the indignity and cruelty the Humans had suffered at the hands of the Geth.

Shepard didn't say anything, and simply shot one of the incoming hostiles in the head, which caused some sort of overload as the creature blew up, taking the other two out with it.

"That door. It's closed. Security lock's engaged." Ashley pointed at the pre-fabricated building, and Shepard approached it, slapping his omni-tool on the door control, overriding the security and opening it.

Two humans were inside the shed, who became alert at hearing the door open, but relaxed.

"Oh, Commander Shepard. Thank the maker, we are safe now." The female researcher said, a sigh of relief escaping her, as she relaxed.

"Yes, yes, Shepard will save us all!" The male researcher, on the other hand, gave Shepard "mad" vibes.

"Yeah, you will be fine, but I need to find the beacon, any idea where it is?"

"It was moved to the spaceport this morning. Manuel and I stayed here to pack up the camp."

"Alright, doctor, stay inside, I already neutralized the Geth, but better to be safe than sorry."

"Yes Commander."

Heading to the spaceport through the burning camp, they came across more pre-fabs, and Shepard's scanners told him there were life-forms inside.

"I am Commander Shepard, whoever you are, stay inside until someone comes to pick you up." He ordered, moving forward. No time to waste on civilians, nor did he want them out in the open and in danger, as he saw Nihlus ahead, with another Turian behind him, slowly raising his pistol.

"Nihlus, duck!" Shepard shouted, irking the Spectre who listened and did as he was told, while Shepard took aim and shot the other Turian's pistol, causing it to blow up.

Both Turians rolled into cover, and Nihlus, upon seeing what the other Turian tried to do, opened fire back, screaming all kinds of obscenities.

Shepard took aim at Saren, which Nihlus was screaming out in anger, waiting for the traitor to show himself, but he was stopped when a Geth dropship came, blocking his view. Shepard fired a couple of shots at the ship, doing no damage, but it wasn't his plan.

Soon enough, the weapon heated, as red lines began to appear on the rifle and he stopped, pulling and holding the trigger while the ship discharged Geth, who started dancing as soon as they were active.

The barrel split apart into four pieces, held together by magnets, before a dark, red beam lashed forward, ignoring the shields, and boring into the ship, causing an explosion when it hit something vital.

The dropship spiralled out of control before crashing, and blowing up again, while the traitorous Turian made it away during Shepard's scuffle with the ship.

"Who was that?" Shepard asked, approaching the absolutely livid Nihlus, who was twitching in anger, but otherwise did not appear to be harmed.

"Saren, another Spectre, and my mentor." Nihlus curtly replied, getting up.Shepard grimaced,

"Any idea why he wanted to kill you?" Shepard asked with a grimace. Betrayal never came from enemies after all.

"None, but he will pay for it. Thank you Shepard, I owe you my life." The Spectre said, an edge to his voice.

"You're welcome."

"By the way, is that a spirits damned laser gun?" Nihlus couldn't help but ask, now that the shock of his mentor's betrayal had given way to anger and a desire for revenge.

"Yes, the mass effect weapons weren't cutting it anymore for me, so I made this." Shepard shrugged, getting tired of repeating himself.

"Well, you do enjoy making the impossible very easy." Nihlus shook his head, still not used to Shepard's Effect, as it was called across the galaxy.

"The beacon was supposed to be here." Shepard changed the subject to the actual matter at the hand.

"It's on the other platform. Please don't shoot me." A human voice called out behind the crates, coming out into the open with his hands raised.

"Well, to the other platform then, in the meantime, get back to hiding, I don't want civilians in my line of fire." Shepard didn't know what the other Spectre wanted with the beacon, but he didn't like losing.

At all.

The human, surprised at being dismissed so quickly, nodded and headed back, he wasn't going to get into an argument with Commander Shepard of all people.

"Shouldn't we question him?" Williams asked, lowering her weapon as the dock worker went back into hiding.

"We know where the beacon is, no need to waste time with him." Shepard said, moving through the wreckage of the dropship, heading to the other platform, while the Marines and the Turian Spectre followed.

Several Geth were ahead, still dancing and singing, though this time to a different song, unable to fight Shepard's ravager virus, which made them easy pickings for the five person squad.

Shepard even made sure to leave some kills for the rest.

More synthetics were on the way to the train controls that would take them to the other platform, doing the worm.

Blitzing through the incapacitated robots, Shepard activated the controls and the train started to move to the other platform.

Unknown to them, Saren was busy setting charges, as his minions were too busy crawling on the ground.

First thing Shepard came across in the other platform was an active demolition charge, and before anyone could say anything, the Commander was already on it, and quickly deactivated the explosive.

"That other Turian must have set them, we need to find them all and shut them down." Williams suggested, opening fire on the Geth that were, ironically, doing the robot dance now.

Moving up the stairs, they took down the Geth, Shepard deactivated the charges, and the squad got ever closer to the beacon.

Down some stairs, they finally saw the beacon, where more Geth were dancing, so they instead focused on the husks, dealing with the mindless abominations easily.

"By the spirits, what are those things?" Nihlus said after making sure his target was dead.

"The spikes must be converting their organic parts to synthetic, and somehow control them to use as disposable troops." Shepard summarized his thoughts, he could go on for longer, but it wasn't the time, and not like the rest of the squad were scientists.

"Let's hope this beacon's worth it." Williams muttered.

"Normandy, the beacon is secure, requesting evac at my coordinates." Shepard turned around to survey the area for any more surprises, while the Marines and the Turian started to inspect the relic, marveling at it.

Having confirmation from the ship, Shepard turned to face the beacon, and pushed Kaidan aside as the beacon was pulling the Chief towards itself. His biotics simply dispelled in response to whatever the beacon was doing to the female marine, so he had no choice but to gather her in his arms, and throw Ashley back, and out of harm's way.

The beacon levitated Shepard, burning images to his mind.

Now, not much was known about the Protheans, even less about their beacon, so this was a new experience for the Commander.

And while those with lesser mental fortitude might have gone down, or even died, Shepard began to fight the beacon in his mind, trying to stop it.

Anthropoidal organics, with four eyes and dual pupils were being experimented on by synthetics, and were turned into husks of their former selves. He didn't understand the language besides some words, but eventually, it lowered Shepard on the ground, going inert as the advanced piece of technology picked up the Human's primitive intent.

Shepard groaned as the Marines and the Turian approached immediately, checking on the Commander, but Shepard waved them off.

"Kaidan, you're in charge, I am going to take a nap, and if something happens to my rifle, I'll hold you responsible." He ordered, his nose bleeding a little bit.

Huh, the first time he shed blood in battle, and it was because of an ancient piece of Prothean relic.

Shepard closed his eyes and went to sleep.
