Chapter 33 - The Parade of Ghosts

Adriana slammed the Green Key

into the center of the Museum's

Great Hall.

She didn't just open a door,

she folded space.

Using her new "Anchor-Point" ability, she grabbed the entire "Sub-Layer" of the Partition and yanked it upward into the physical coordinates of 53rd Street.

The air in Midtown Manhattan ripped open with the sound of a thousand glass chimes.

A wave of lavender-scented air and violet light spilled out of the Museum's front doors, flooding 5th Avenue.

And then, the people came.

It started with a trickle, then a flood.

The Baker from the 1950s walked out onto the pavement, clutching a loaf of bread that smelled of a century ago. Victorian children in tattered lace ran past yellow taxis, laughing at the "metal horses."

The "Deleted" souls of 1990s businessmen and 1920s jazz musicians mingled with confused tourists holding iPhones.

"What is this?"

a woman on the street cried out, filming the scene as a translucent flapper-girl walked through her.

"Are they ghosts?"

"No," Adriana's voice projected through the "Resonance,"

echoing from the glass of every skyscrape

"They are the Found.

They are your history, returned to you."

The Overseers, hovering above the city, paused.

Their "Thermal Purge" was hitting empty air

the "Sub-Layer" was now merged with the "Physical Layer."

They could no longer burn the souls without burning the physical foundation of the world

an action that would violate their prime directive of "Resource Management."

The city was in chaos.

Traffic stopped.

The police stood frozen as a troop of Revolutionary War soldiers marched through a Starbucks.

But amidst the panic, there was a surge of Pure Recognition.

People in the crowd began to scream

not in terror, but in shock.

A man recognized his grandfather who had "disappeared" forty years ago.

A woman found the sister she had been told was a "glitch" in the hospital records.

"The Rebellion has a face now,

Caius whispered, watching the reunions.

"But Adriana, look at the sky."

The two remaining Overseers weren't retreating.

They were changing shape.

Their obsidian bodies began to unfold, expanding into massive, geometric Harvesters.

They were preparing to "Vacuum" the entire street

souls, humans, and buildings alike.

"They're going to take the whole block," Adriana realized.

Suddenly, her Green Key vibrated violently.

A new signal was coming through

not from London, but from within the crowd.
