Chapter 7 - chapter 7: the fractal speed

The air in the Sub-Zero Vault didn't just warm up; it shattered.

The sudden transition from the absolute cold of the Frost-Iron to the Alchemist's desperate fire created a thermal explosion. The leaden gauntlet encasing Kaito's right hand disintegrated into molten shards.

The Jagged Movement

As the chains snapped, Kaito didn't just fall; he transitioned. Under Kage's tutelage, he realized that Thunder wasn't just about lightning bolts—it was about the nervous system. By sending micro-vibrations through his own nerves, Kaito could move faster than the human eye could process.

"He's loose! Level 4 containment!" the Alchemist screamed, stumbling back.

Kaito didn't punch him. He moved past him. To the guards entering the hallway, Kaito looked like a glitch in reality—a flickering shadow that appeared in three places at once. This was the Fractal Step.

The Hallway of Spears

A dozen elite guards blocked the exit, their spears ignited to create a wall of fire. In the narrow corridor, there was no room to dodge.

"Don't go around the fire," Kage commanded. "Consume it. You are a vacuum, remember?"

Kaito held out the Ring. As he ran full-tilt toward the wall of flame, the violet stone began to spin. The fire wasn't extinguished—it was sucked into the Ring, leaving the guards holding cold, dark sticks of wood.

Before they could react, Kaito struck the floor.

BOOM.

A pulse of kinetic energy sent the guards flying toward the ceiling. Kaito didn't stop to look back. He was a bolt of blue-black energy racing toward the Great Archive.

The Voice from the Void

As he reached the heavy iron doors of the Archive, a new sensation hit him. It wasn't the violent roar of Kage. It was a cold, quiet whisper that smelled of mountain snow.

"The Ring is a bridge, Kaito. Not just a grave."

Kaito froze. A second figure appeared in his mind—a man in white robes, standing opposite the shadowy Kage. This was the residual memory of Shin, the Protector.

"Ignore him!" Kage spat. "He is the one who put you in this cage!"

"I put the world in balance," the spirit of Shin replied calmly. "Kaito, if you take the Ledger, you take the burden of the whole truth. Are you ready to be hated by everyone?"

The Choice

Kaito grabbed the central scroll from the Archive—the Ledger of the Divided Earth. He felt the history of 400 years pulsing through the paper.

"I've been hated my whole life for being a 'Dud'," Kaito said, his voice echoing in the empty library. "I think I can handle being hated for being the truth."

He kicked open the final set of doors, bursting out into the cold night air of the mountains. Behind him, the bells of the Flame City were ringing—a sound that signaled a "Red Hunt." Every warrior in the clan was now authorized to kill him on sight.

Kaito looked at the dark forest ahead. He was no longer a citizen. He was a ghost
