Chapter 15 - chapter 15: the unifier's shadow

The Festival of Petals transformed into a nightmare. The sky turned a bruised purple as the Grave-Keeper marched forward, his Void-Iron staff draining the color from the world. Simultaneously, the hidden Flame and Aqua squads struck, thinking the chaos was their perfect cover to seize Kaito.

The Leaf Clan warriors were overwhelmed. Their vines were boiled by the Flame Clan's heat and frozen by the Aqua Clan's ice. Lord Veridian struggled to hold the line as the Grave-Keeper's gray rot began to climb the trunk of the World-Tree.

The Masked Intervention

In the panic, Kaito vanished. He found a discarded training mask in the guardhouse—a stylized wooden face of a forest spirit. He pulled it on, wrapping his body in a tattered cloak to hide his Smolder District scars.

"The vessel is ready," Kage growled. "They want to see a monster? Let's show them a God."

Kaito leaped from the high branches, landing in the center of the battlefield with a shockwave that cracked the earth. With a single flick of his wrist, he unleashed a Circular Flame Burst—a pure, white-hot fire that was ten times hotter than anything Commander Cinder-Hand could produce.

The Fire and Aqua warriors collapsed instantly, their spirits crushed by the sheer pressure of the attack.

"Who is that?!" Veridian shouted, shielding his eyes. "A Fire-user... helping us?"

The Dual Resonance

The Grave-Keeper didn't flinch. He swung his staff, sending a wave of soul-eating gray energy at the masked Kaito.

"You mimic the Flame," the Grave-Keeper hissed. "But you are hollow."

Kaito didn't just use fire. He reached out with his left hand and touched the ground. Using the World-Sap still flowing in his veins, he commanded the roots. Massive, glowing green emerald-thorns erupted from the soil, lacing together with his fire to create a Burning Forest Shield.

The crowd gasped. The Elders fell to their knees.

"Two elements..." they whispered. "The Unifier has returned."

The Dragon's Ascent

Seeing his gray mist defeated, the Grave-Keeper let out a piercing shriek. His body began to distort, his bones cracking and elongating. The gray silk of his robes tore as massive, obsidian-colored scales erupted from his skin.

Within seconds, the man vanished, replaced by a Grave-Dragon—a creature of shadow and bone fifty feet long, its breath a cloud of pure decay. It roared, and the very leaves of the World-Tree began to wilt.

"He's using the forbidden transformation!" Kage shouted. "Kaito, your body can't handle the Thunder anymore... we need the 'Other' side. Shine, you old bastard! Give him the Light!"

The Light of the Protector

For the first time, the quiet voice of Shin surged forward. Kaito's right hand didn't glow violet—it turned a blinding, holy white.

"Protect the tree," Kaito whispered.

He leaped into the air, a streak of pure white light. He didn't punch the dragon; he became a spear of energy. He pierced through the dragon's chest, the light of Shin cauterizing the decay and shattering the Grave-Keeper's form into a thousand shards of glass.

The Vanishing

As the smoke and dust of the explosion settled, a thick fog covered the battlefield. When the wind finally cleared the air, the masked man was gone.

A few minutes later, Kaito stumbled out from behind a pile of rubble, rubbing his eyes and acting dazed, his clothes singed but his mask long gone.

"What happened?" Kaito asked, feigning confusion as Elara ran toward him. "I heard a roar and then... everything went white."

Lord Veridian looked at Kaito, then at the spot where the masked savior had stood. The entire village was in shock. The Flame and Aqua invaders were retreating in terror, whispering about the "Masked God" who could command both Fire and Leaf.

"Well played, actor," Kage whispered in Kaito's mind, a dark smirk in his voice. "But look at your hands."

Kaito looked down. His fingertips were still glowing with a faint, fading white light. The secret was safe for now, but the world now knew that the Unifier was no longer a legend. He was alive.
