Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Room That Watched Back

The door didn't creak when it opened.

That was the first thing that felt wrong.

Vex had expected noise—something sharp, something warning him to turn back. But the door slid inward silently, as if the room itself had been waiting for him.

Cold air rushed out.

Not the normal kind of cold. This one clung to his skin, crawling under his clothes, seeping into his bones. The lantern in his hand flickered violently, its flame shrinking as if afraid.

The room beyond was wide. Too wide.

The walls were smooth and pale, stretching far into darkness. No windows. No furniture. Just a single object at the center.

A chair.

Old. Wooden. Stained dark in places where no polish could explain the color.

Vex stepped inside.

The door shut behind him.

Not slammed.

Not locked.

It simply closed, final and quiet.

His heartbeat thundered in his ears.

"Hello?" he called out.

The word echoed back… but slower.

Hello…

…hello…

...hello…

The echoes didn't fade.

They stayed.

Hanging in the air like whispers that forgot how to die.

Vex swallowed and moved closer to the chair. With every step, the lantern dimmed further, shadows stretching unnaturally along the walls. He felt it then—that sensation of being watched.

Not from one direction.

From everywhere.

He stopped.

"I know this is another test," he muttered. "Just show yourself."

The chair moved.

It didn't scrape the floor. It didn't shift normally.

It simply turned.

Facing him.

Vex froze.

Something sat on it now.

He was certain it hadn't been there before.

The figure was human-shaped but wrong—its limbs slightly too long, its head tilted at an impossible angle. Its face was hidden behind a smooth, mask-like surface with no eyes… yet Vex felt its gaze.

"You passed the last stage," the figure said.

Its voice was layered. Young and old. Familiar and foreign.

"But passing doesn't mean surviving."

The lantern went out.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Vex gasped, stumbling back, his hand reaching blindly for the door that no longer existed.

Then—

Light.

Not warm. Not comforting.

A dull, gray glow filled the room, revealing the walls were no longer smooth.

They were covered in names.

Thousands of them.

Carved.

Scratched.

Etched with desperation.

Vex recognized some.

Players.

Contestants.

People who had disappeared from earlier rounds.

"They were here," he whispered.

The figure stood now.

"You are walking where the forgotten failed."

It stepped closer without moving its feet—gliding across the floor like a shadow torn loose from its owner.

Vex felt pressure build in his chest. Memories surged forward without warning.

The first scream he heard in the game.

The sound of bones cracking behind locked doors.

The moment he realized the game didn't care if he was brave—only if he was useful.

"You carry fear well," the figure said. "That makes you interesting."

The names on the wall began to bleed.

Not heavily. Not dramatically.

Just enough to drip slowly, pooling at the base of the walls.

Vex clenched his fists. "If this is about breaking me, you're wasting your time."

The figure paused.

Then it laughed.

A soft, broken sound.

"No," it replied. "This is about choosing what breaks instead."

The walls shifted.

The names rearranged themselves, forming sentences now.

YOU WILL BE ALONE.

THEY ALWAYS ARE.

THE GAME ENDS WITH YOU.

The chair reappeared behind Vex.

Something grabbed his shoulders.

Cold hands.

Not tight—but heavy.

"For the next stage," the figure whispered near his ear, "you must sit."

Vex fought the urge to scream.

He knew this rule.

Refusal had consequences.

Slowly, trembling, he sat.

The moment he did, the room dissolved.

Darkness rushed in again—but this time, it wasn't empty.

Voices filled it.

People calling his name.

Some begging.

Some accusing.

Some laughing.

And beneath them all, one voice—low, calm, certain.

"Chapter complete," it said.

"But the game has learned you now."

Vex opened his eyes.

He was no longer in the room.

But the feeling of being watched…

Had followed him out.
