Chapter 25 - Vol. 2: Chapt. 9: Mishap At The Grand Market

The Grand Market: The Lifeblood of Alexia

The students transitioned to the Grand Market, a sight they were far too familiar with. They followed their teacher through the massive arched gateway, experiencing the familiar shift from the quiet morning air to the roar of commerce. Having toured these districts multiple times as part of their studies, the group moved with practiced ease, no longer overwhelmed by the scale but instead focused on the specific details of the day's lesson.

Professor Log pointed toward a cluster of shops, explaining their significance. "You have all walked past these stalls many times, but do you know their history? Many of these storefronts predate my birth; a few are even older than the Academy itself."

The Mystical Quarter and Crystal Bazaars

They began their trek in the narrow, twilight-lit corridors of the Mystical Quarter. High above, heavy blue and gold silks swayed between the arches, partially obscuring the view of the great glowing domes that defined the market skyline. The teacher paused the group outside a shop known as Inchantmint, where a familiar celestial diagram in the window pulsed with a warm, rhythmic light. The students crowded around the glass, noting the new shipments of glowing jars and leather-bound books that had arrived since their last visit.

"As you can see," Professor Log continued, "the Grand Market isn't simply a place to shop; it is the lifeblood of Alexia. Millions of merchants, visitors, and Guilds travel across the world just to stand where you are standing." He moved quickly, scanning his students to ensure they were paying attention. "Follow along, please. Remember for your notes: the Grand Market is the fourth largest market in the world."

From there, they transitioned into the Crystal Bazaars, a section seamlessly integrated with the ancient, misty trees of the inner gardens. The floor was illuminated by towering, smooth stone sidewalks that pulsed in vibrant pinks and deep blues, reflecting off the merchants' tables. The students watched the light play off their shoes, comparing the glow to the magical theories they had discussed in the classroom.

Logistics and The Great Square

Leaving the mystical glow behind, the class emerged into the brilliant sunlight of the Great Square. This was the heart of the city's logistics, where the architecture shifted to sturdy, timber-framed houses and imposing stone watchtowers. They navigated the structured chaos of the Produce Rows, winding through narrow cobblestone alleys where the scent of fresh citrus and earth was strongest. Vendors worked in the golden light, stacking crates of oranges and greens with rhythmic efficiency.

Looking down from the elevated stone walkways, the students observed the Awnings of Commerce—a vast sea of blue-and-white striped stalls forming a perfect grid of trade. Below them, people in traditional tunics and robes haggled over everything from rare spices to heavy textiles. Finally, the teacher led them toward a quiet corner near a cathedral-like archway. Using the bustling background as a living map, Professor Log pointed out how the magical, maritime, and agricultural districts all converged.

Ambush in the Alley

The students took their notes, recognizing that while the sights were spectacular, this was a working engine of the city, operating on the strict timetable they were required to master. As the group focused on their work, George noticed a thief snatching the purse of an older woman.

Instinctively, he gave chase. Nana, Kayn, and Ren followed close behind, slipping away from the group without being noticed. The chase led them through a maze of stalls and eventually into a dead-end alleyway.

The thief spun around, attempting to knock George down to make his escape. George easily dodged the lunging man and hit him with a concentrated wind blast, sending him flying into a wall and knocking him unconscious.

Just as George picked up the purse to return it to the woman, a group of thugs emerged from the shadows, surrounding the students.

Confrontation with Boss Ferrara

One of the thugs let out a mocking laugh. "Well, well, well. Looks like we just snagged ourselves a few coins, gentlemen. Crow's going to be very happy with this catch."

The other thugs joined in the laughter. George stepped forward, his hands glowing with wind magic. "Get out of our way!"

"And what if we don't, kid?" the lead thug sneered.

"Then I'll make you," George replied, his eyes full of determination.

The thugs burst into laughter again. One man stepped in front of the leader. "Boss Ferrara, sit back. We'll take care of these idiots. The Boss shouldn't have to waste his time with a group of school kids."

Another thug stepped forward, cracking his knuckles. "Boss, these kids are pretty cocky. Let's have some fun. Do you kids even know who you've messed with?"

Nana's fingers began to crackle with lightning. "I don't care who you are."

"Show some respect!" the thug barked. "You're standing in front of the great Vincent Ferrara. The Boss."

The Tide Turns

Boss Ferrara stepped back, casually sitting on a stack of crates. "Dice, Tank—stay back for a second. Let's sit back and enjoy the show."

The two elite goons, Dice and Tank, stepped back as Ferrara ordered the rest of the thugs to attack. One man lunged to grab Nana, but she slipped past him, striking him in the face with a devastating punch infused with uncontrolled lightning. Another attempted to grab her from behind, but Ren fired a fire arrow from a flickering, unstable bow, knocking the thug to the ground. The rest of the gang jumped in, but George and his friends dodged and countered, knocking them down like bowling pins until the alley was filled with men howling in pain. George, Nana, Kayn, and Ren stood tall, smirks beginning to form on their faces.

Boss Ferrara began to clap slowly. "Wow. These kids actually have some moves. Crow is really going to pay big for them. Tank, Dice—enough. End this game." He gestured to his two primary goons. They rushed the students with blinding speed. Dice weaved past Nana's punch and knocked her out with a single, precise strike. He spun instantly, catching Kayn in the face and knocking him out cold before he could react.

Ren managed to fire a fire arrow at Tank, but the massive man simply absorbed the heat, laughing as he punched Ren square in the face, sending him into a stone wall.

George attempted to save his friends, but he was completely outmatched. Tank's fist connected with his jaw, knocking him to the ground, but George refused to stay down. As he tried to rise, Dice kicked him hard in the sternum, knocking the air out of his lungs.

Ferrara looked on, noticeably irritated. "Dice, Tank, hurry it up. Time is money."

Tank punched the air, and a massive fist made of solid earth materialized, smacking George in the face. This time, George didn't get up; he fell back, unconscious.
