Chapter 144 - Vol. 7: Chapt. 14: The Predator and the Prey

The Predator and the Prey

The announcer, clearly fueled by the adrenaline of the previous matches, leaned into his microphone, his voice echoing across the obsidian stage. "This has been one of the best Harvest Festivals in recent memory! We have been privileged to witness the birth of legends today, and we still have six matches left in this first phase! Speaking of matches, let us welcome our next two contenders. From the celestial land of Xi, the Prince and heir to the throne: Sun Wu Kang! And his opponent, hailing from the rugged highlands of Parthia: Gizzal Hedu!"

Gizzal Hedu stepped onto the stage, a burly, imposing figure whose presence felt as solid as the mountains of his homeland. His skin was weathered, and his muscles were corded like thick rope. On his right wrist, an unusual gold bracelet caught the arena lights; it featured the intricate, embossed face of a gazelle with eight eyes arranged like those of an arachnid. As he began to flex his arms, the relic began to pulse with a warm, amber light.

"This bracelet is no mere trinket!" Gizzal boomed, his voice resonating with tribal pride. "It is an ancient relic passed down by the chieftain of my village. It grants the wielder the primal essence of the Spider Gazelle! I gain not only the speed of the plains but the awareness of the weaver. To the Spider Gazelle, the world moves in slow motion. Let me demonstrate!"

Sun Wu Kang watched the display with a mischievous, sharp-toothed "fang" grin. At only fifteen, the Prince of Xi already possessed a formidable, athletic build. His spiky, light-blonde hair was tied back in a small topknot with a red band, standing out against the dark, polished plate armor protecting his shoulders. The golden pauldrons, etched with feathered, wing-like designs, caught the light as he shifted his weight. Beneath the armor, his black and white tunic, detailed with gold filigree and a bright yellow sash, marked him as royalty. Over his shoulder, the tip of a light-colored red staff etched with glowing white symbols peeked out, humming with latent magical intent.

Without further warning, Gizzal lunged. His movement was a blur of insane, almost invisible speed. He crossed the distance in a heartbeat, catching Sun off guard. Gizzal's fist whistled through the air, nearly connecting with Sun's jaw. Sun's piercing orange eyes narrowed, and with a flicker of instinct, he managed to counter, his movement just barely missing the Parthian as Gizzal pivoted with impossible agility.

Sun's expression hardened, his playful grin vanishing into a mask of visible frustration. He began to chase Gizzal all over the ring, his boots clicking sharply against the obsidian, but Gizzal's speed was simply too immense. The Spider Gazelle relic allowed the warrior to weave through the air like he was moving through water.

"I have had enough of these silly games," Sun declared, his voice dropping into a cold, menacing register. "It is time for the predator to kill the spider gazelle."

Sun planted his feet, and a powerful surge of aura erupted from his core. He didn't chase anymore; he commanded. With a flick of his fingers, he created a binding ring of fire that snapped shut around Gizzal's legs and hands, completely immobilizing the speedster in a cage of heat. He then conjured an executioner's platform made entirely of swirling, semi-solid fire, binding Gizzal to the center of it.

With a force in his voice that shook the rafters, Sun yelled out to the heavens, his words a chilling warning to every candidate watching from the tunnels. "This is a message to all of the other candidates! Your life holds no weight in my mind! Stand in the ring with me, and you die!"

At that horrifying moment, Sun closed his fist. A terrifying vortex of fire erupted around Gizzal, the flames spiraling and intensifying into a white-hot pillar. In a single flash of heat and blinding light, the Parthian warrior was completely incinerated.

The announcer erupted, his voice a mixture of shock and poorly hidden disgust, as the crowd began to boo loudly, the sound like a crashing wave of disapproval. "He's… he is cold! Well, ladies and gentlemen, your winner is Sun Wu Kang, the Prince of Xi!"
