"So this is the Hogwarts student?"
"Wizards are evil; they must be eradicated."
"Use Legilimency. Find out the internal strength of Hogwarts."
"I don't care about a child's life or death. The Church has plenty of children; we don't need to concern ourselves with this one."
"Throw him into the deepest level of Hell. Let him be fodder for those monsters..."
Dazed and confused, Rey had barely been conscious.
His head was splitting with pain, and his entire body felt like it was falling apart. He vaguely remembered encountering the Church's bandit trio on his way back to Hogwarts, then being sent flying by a giant werewolf.
As he slowly regained consciousness, he was greeted by various potions being forced down his throat. They tasted of everything imaginable, even one that reeked of nauseating swill.
Several people held him down. He had managed to knock one or two away during his delirious struggles. His consciousness was clear, but it felt like he was watching from a third-person perspective as these people worked him over.
Then came Legilimency, Truth Serums, and Veritaserum.
Essentially, every spell designed to pry into thoughts and invade the mind had been used on him.
Miraculously, in the end, he hadn't said a word. He even managed to leap up and shove two people into the wall. That scene felt almost like a demonic possession, granting him immense strength.
However, a hero can't fight a horde. He was eventually tied up.
During this process, a man left a deep impression on Rey. He wore a red monastic robe, a cross necklace, and a round white zucchetto.
One moment, he was like a priest from a movie, speaking softly with a calming magic that lowered one's guard. The next, he was violent, punching and kicking Rey, his eyes as vicious as a demon from Hell.
He waved his wand, and no matter how painful the spell he cast, the magical light it emitted looked so holy. Holy without a single flaw, which made it incredibly eerie.
Bishop, Cardinal, Ascetic... Various terms unique to the Church flashed through Rey's mind.
---
BANG!
A loud crash.
Barely alive and tortured beyond recognition, Rey was dragged out of the Church's Dark Tribunal by two armored soldiers. The loud crash was the sound of the massive wooden door, over ten meters high, slamming shut behind him.
Outside the tribunal was a long corridor.
Although there were tall floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides, letting in sunlight, the environment here still felt dim. There was a faint smell of decay in the air, as if none of this had anything to do with sunlight.
With the torture and interrogation over, Rey's consciousness slowly returned to his body. He lifted his head slightly, squinting at the surroundings, and saw a white man walking toward him.
A white male, around thirty years old, with a cold, handsome face and an elegant demeanor. Every gesture exuded an air of nobility.
This man was clearly an aristocrat, and he felt oddly familiar.
Dragged by two guards, Rey weakly lifted his drooping head and locked eyes with the man passing by.
The man's gaze was indifferent, showing no emotion. To him, Rey was just another unlucky soul dragged out of the tribunal.
Several unfortunates were dragged out of the tribunal every day, but few were thrown into the deepest level of Hell.
Hell was actually just a dungeon six levels deep. Every year, two people were thrown into the sixth level as fodder for the monsters. Rey was the first this year; who knew which poor soul would be "lucky" enough to follow?
The noble didn't give Rey a second glance, but the weak Rey turned his head to look back several times.
Smack.
Rey received a punch to the head. Forced by the blow, his head, which he had struggled to lift, drooped weakly again.
"Didn't expect someone coming out of the tribunal alive to still have the strength to look up," one soldier remarked, surprised. They dragged people to Hell every day. Having done this job for a long time, seeing someone like Rey who still had the strength to lift his head was a first.
---
Rey lowered his head, trying to keep his body relaxed. He didn't want the two dragging him to notice anything amiss.
Because right now, a storm was raging in his heart.
The white man who had just walked past him was the nightmare from before he regained his memories. That man was the director of the orphanage: Ryan Evos.
Rey never expected to meet him here. And what was this place?
This was the Church!
A vampire, even one wearing a Daylight Ring, no matter how high his rank, could not escape the label of "vampire."
The Church existed specifically to hunt vampires; countless modern movies and anime depicted this. Yet, here was Ryan Evos, walking freely within the Church. This completely overturned Rey's understanding.
When he first saw Ryan Evos just now, amidst his shock, Rey looked at the man's right middle finger.
In the future, Ryan Evos wore a Daylight Ring on that finger. Rey needed to confirm the ring's presence. If there was no Daylight Ring, there was another possibility: perhaps he was still human at this point in time.
But the Daylight Ring was there, pristine on his right middle finger. This confirmed to Rey that he was a vampire, and undoubtedly Ryan Evos himself.
He hadn't expected to meet Ryan Evos more than a thousand years in the past. Aside from different clothing, he looked no different from the future. Time left no marks on vampires like them.
After the shock, Rey felt much more lucid, though his body remained weak.
Since the Church planned to use him as fodder, they wouldn't leave him with much resistance. They must have used some magic to inhibit his physical recovery.
"Damn it!"
Rey cursed inwardly. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't think of a quick way to recover his strength. If he had a wand, he might mobilize some magic, but right now, that was out of the question.
The soldiers dragged Rey through the corridor and into a deep, dark tunnel entrance.
The tunnel wound downward with stone stairs. Every twenty meters or so, there was a stone door.
The further down they went, the colder it felt. Even with braziers lighting the way on both sides, the chill persisted, and the smell of decay in the air grew heavier.
After descending for who knows how long, Rey was brought before a massive stone gate. This gate was easily two or three times larger than the ones above.
There were twenty guards here. Seeing Rey brought in, a group of five began using a winch to open the heavy stone gate.
The gate groaned and clicked under the strain of the mechanism. After about half a minute, it opened a third of the way. Then, Rey was kicked inside by the armored soldiers like a log.
The ground inside the gate sloped downward, and Rey rolled in rapidly.
BOOM!
With a thunderous crash, the stone gate slammed shut after Rey entered.
The impact of such a massive stone gate falling not only made a huge noise but also shook loose quite a bit of dust from the ceiling.
---
Rey had been kicked and rolled into this pitch-black subterranean world.
While rolling in, he felt like he passed through a membrane. It felt somewhat like a protective barrier.
Then came the thunderous crash, which nearly shattered his eardrums.
But because of that crash, he surprisingly regained some strength. At the very least, after resting for a while, he managed to scramble to his feet.
The loud noise seemed to dispel some of the magical inhibition within his body. The Church fanatics had designed this quite thoroughly. Perhaps they wanted the "monster fodder" to regain some stamina so the texture would be better for consumption.
Supporting himself against the freshly dropped stone gate, Rey stood up and looked into the pitch-black underground world.
A world of darkness without a sliver of light. He didn't know how wide or high it was. If there were just a bit of light, maybe he could figure out the environment.
However, just as Rey was observing cautiously, ghostly translucent lights suddenly lit up in the dark world.
It was the light of souls, scattered throughout the pitch-black space.
Following the lights came screams of painful weakness. Translucent souls turned into wisps of mist, sucked into the darkness before them.
The screams varied in length. When they stopped, a sparkling star point appeared—the last crystalline light of a human soul. But as soon as it appeared, it was swallowed by a masked, black humanoid monster.
Rey shuddered. Under the light of the soul crystal, he saw the monster's form clearly.
It looked like a tall, thin human, but wrapped in a large, tattered cloak.
A floating figure, with long, thin, skeletal fingers.
Rey never imagined that the so-called "monsters" of the Church were actually the Dementors that would guard Azkaban Prison in the future.
