Chapter 1 - moonlight over shanghai

Shanghai slept under a silver moon.

The Huangpu River reflected the city lights like scattered dreams, and the night air felt soft, almost tender. Han Yuanyuan stood near the riverside railing, her long coat moving gently with the breeze. She came here often, yet tonight felt… different.

That was when she sensed him.

She turned slowly.

Li Wei stood a few steps away, hands in his pockets, his gaze calm yet intense. The glow of the streetlamp softened his sharp features. When his eyes met hers, Yuanyuan felt her heart tighten—as if it recognized him before her mind could.

"Are you waiting for someone?" Li Wei asked quietly.

His voice was low, steady, and it wrapped around her like warmth.

She shook her head. "No. Just thinking."

He nodded, stepping closer, careful not to cross an invisible line. Still, she could feel his presence—strong, comforting.

"The night is cold," he said.

Before she could respond, Li Wei removed his coat and gently placed it over her shoulders. His fingers brushed her collarbone for the briefest moment.

Yuanyuan's breath caught.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Their eyes lingered on each other, words forgotten. The city noise faded, leaving only the sound of the river and her racing heart.

"Do you believe some meetings are written?" Li Wei asked.

Yuanyuan looked at him. "Written where?"

"In the stars," he replied softly. "Or maybe… in the heart."

Her lips curved into a shy smile. "Then this meeting feels written."

Li Wei slowly reached out, his hand hovering near hers—asking, not forcing.

Yuanyuan placed her hand in his.

Their fingers fit together naturally, sending warmth through her veins. The world felt smaller, safer. He stepped closer, close enough that she could feel his breath, but he stopped—respectful, patient.

"I don't usually do this," she admitted.

"Neither do I," Li Wei said, his thumb gently brushing her knuckles. "But with you… it feels right."

He leaned forward, resting his forehead lightly against hers. No rush. No pressure. Just closeness.

Yuanyuan closed her eyes.

For a moment, nothing existed except the quiet space between them—filled with longing, promise, and something dangerously close to love.

When they finally pulled apart, Li Wei smiled.

"May I see you again?" he asked.

She nodded. "Yes."

Under the moonlight of Shanghai, their hands remained linked, as if letting go would break something precious.

Yuanyuan knew it then.

This was not just a meeting.

This was the beginning of a love written in the night.
