Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: The Weighted Question

Elara woke before the dawn chime. The dorm room was quiet soft breathing from her roommate, the faint glow of the wellness panel on the wall showing 98% rest quality. She sat up, pulling her knees to her chest, the blanket pooling around her.

Last night's river walk replayed in her mind. The way she'd talked about her parents. The pin. The old stories. She'd said more than she meant to. More than she usually did.

For a second, doubt crept in. Did I say too much? Did they think I was complaining?

Then she remembered Kairo's hand on her shoulder light, steady, no judgment. Seraph's quiet nod, the way he always listened without interrupting. They hadn't pulled away. They hadn't changed the subject. They'd just… stayed.

She exhaled slowly. They've always been there. Through everything. They never gave up on me. Not once.

A small smile touched her lips.

I'm glad I told them.

The chime sounded soft, melodic, starting the day. She got up, dressed in the usual clean uniform, and headed out. The hallway was already filling with students moving in calm sync. She spotted Kairo and Seraph waiting by the lift, same spot as always.

Kairo grinned when he saw her. "Morning. Sleep okay?"

Elara nodded, falling into step between them. "Better than I thought."

Seraph gave her a small glance nothing dramatic, just checking. She smiled back. Everything felt normal again.

The afternoon class came after lunch. Ancient Earth History 101. The room filled with the usual soft rhythm: seats adjusting, displays blooming, thirty-two students settling in.

Teacher Lira Voss stood at the front. "Today we review how gratitude sustains harmony. When we appreciate what we have, we strengthen the whole."

A hand rose near the middle slow, hesitant.

Joren. Quiet boy, three rows ahead.

His voice was small but clear. "Teacher… what happened to the people who didn't agree?"

The room didn't gasp. It didn't freeze. But the air shifted. Every head turned just slightly. Not dramatic. Just enough.

Teacher Voss didn't flinch. Smile gentle, unchanged.

"An excellent question, Joren," she said smoothly. "Before the Breakthrough, disagreement often led to division, conflict, loss. Those who couldn't align with the emerging consensus chose isolation or exile. Many simply… faded from the record. The system we enjoy today was built by those who agreed to try something new. Their choice made this possible."

She paused, letting the words settle.

"Gratitude reminds us that we don't have to carry that weight. We get to live in the world they built."

Joren's face flushed. He lowered his hand quickly. "I'm sorry," he said, almost automatically. "I shouldn't have asked."

Teacher Voss tilted her head. "Curiosity is natural, Joren. The important thing is recognizing when a question serves harmony… and when it doesn't."

The class murmured soft agreement automatic, soothing. The lesson continued as if nothing had happened.

Kairo watched Joren the whole time.

The boy kept his eyes on his desk after that, shoulders hunched, fingers twisting under the table. No one teased him. No one needed to. The apology had been enough.

After class, as students filed out, Kairo lingered near the door. Joren passed last, head down.

Kairo stepped beside him casually. "Hey. You okay?"

Joren glanced up, startled. "Yeah. Just… I didn't mean to cause trouble."

"You didn't." Kairo smiled small, reassuring. "You asked a question. That's not trouble. It's… honest."

Joren swallowed. "Teacher said it was okay, but it didn't feel okay."

Kairo nodded. "Sometimes the system protects us from questions we're not ready for. But asking them anyway… that takes courage."

Joren looked at him for a long second.

Kairo kept his tone light. "If you ever want to talk about it away from class I'm around."

Joren hesitated, then gave a tiny nod. "Thanks."

He walked off faster.

Kairo watched him go, expression calm.

Elara and Seraph waited near the lockers.

Elara tilted her head. "What was that about?"

Kairo shrugged, easy smile returning. "Just checking on him. Kid looked shaken."

Seraph's eyes lingered on Joren's back a moment longer than necessary.

The next morning the hallways buzzed.

Not loud. Not panicked. Just… different.

Kairo, Elara, and Seraph walked toward first period, the usual morning flow around them. But today conversations were lower, glances quicker, small clusters leaning close.

"Did you hear about Joren?"

"He didn't come in today."

"I heard he got a wellness check after class yesterday. Asked something weird."

"About before," a boy added. "Teacher answered, and he just… apologized. Then gone."

Elara slowed. "Wellness check?"

Seraph kept walking, pace steady. "It happens. If someone's thoughts get too heavy."

Kairo listened without turning his head. Rumors rippled ahead in fragments different voices, same core.

"He just asked what happened to people who didn't agree with the Breakthrough."

"The teacher said they chose exile. Then Joren said sorry like he'd done something wrong."

"Next thing, he's gone. No announcement. No drama."

A girl near the lockers leaned close to her friend. My brother said Joren's getting updated. Nothing serious. Just… recalibration.

No one looked scared. No one raised their voice. Just quiet murmurs fading fast. The hallway kept moving lockers chiming, students greeting each other, heading to class. Everything still perfect on the surface.

Elara's voice came low. "This is exactly what happened to my parents."

Kairo glanced at her. You think?

She nodded, eyes on the floor. They asked questions. Not loud. Not angry. Just questions. One day they went for a wellness check. Then nothing.

Seraph's jaw tightened just a fraction. They were good people. They just got lost in questions.

Elara exhaled. "I don't want to disappear to. Elara says Nearly in tears.

Kairo placed a hand on her shoulder light, steady. You won't.

They reached the lockers. Elara opened hers slowly. Seraph closed his with a soft click, eyes scanning the hallway.

A few lockers down, Mara was talking to another girl, voice hushed.

Joren was fine yesterday. Asked one thing. Now he's not here.

Kairo stepped away from Elara and Seraph, walked over casually.

"Hey, Mara," he said, voice friendly. You okay? You look worried.

Mara looked up, startled. Oh… hi, Kairo. Yeah, just… Joren.

Kairo nodded. "He asked a question. Teacher answered. Nothing wrong with that, right?"

Mara hesitated. "I guess. But then he apologized. Like he knew he shouldn't have asked."

Kairo smiled small, reassuring. Questions aren't bad. They're just timing. Sometimes the system needs a little push to remember that.

Mara blinked. You think?

Kairo shrugged, stepping back. Just something to think about.

He rejoined Elara and Seraph. Elara raised an eyebrow. What was that?

Kairo smiled. Just checking on her. She looked shaken.

Seraph's eyes lingered on Mara a second longer than necessary.

The bell chimed,soft, melodic.

They walked in together, rumors fading behind them like smoke.

But the question lingered.

What happened to the people who didn't agree?

And Kairo's quiet words to Mara echoed just a little louder than they should have.
