Voren's face darkened the second Augustine walked up. Just seeing him dragged up a memory Voren had tried hard to bury. That night at the restaurant when Santiago first laid eyes on Seraphine.
He could still picture exactly how beautiful she'd looked that day. She hadn't worn anything over the top, but she'd clearly put real thought into her outfit before meeting Augustine.
Back then, the sight had bothered him way more than he wanted to admit, and even now it left a bitter, sour taste in his mouth. The last thing he wanted was Augustine anywhere near her.
Seraphine acted like she hadn't picked up on the change in Voren's mood at all. She forced a small smile and looked at Augustine. "August, what's going on?"
Augustine lowered his head, all the usual confidence completely gone. Heavy guilt was written all over his face instead. "Sera…" His voice came out softer than normal. "I was wrong."
