Chapter 1 - chapter 1:Whispers of the Mountain

In the sun-drenched city of Pompeii, where marble villas gleamed beside bustling markets, Lucius roamed the streets with the freedom of youth. At twelve years old, he was a wiry boy with sun-kissed skin and eyes full of dreams. His father, Marcus, hauled fish from the Bay of Naples each dawn, his calloused hands mending nets that fed their family. Their home, a cozy insula off the Via dell'Abbondanza, hummed with life—his mother, Livia, wove garlands of myrtle and roses for the temple of Venus, her songs floating through the atrium.Life pulsed vibrantly. Gladiators trained in the amphitheater, their clashes echoing like thunder. Merchants shouted prices for garum sauce and Falernian wine, while slaves carried amphorae heavy with olive oil. Lucius helped his father at the docks, dodging carts laden with grain from Egypt. Vesuvius loomed in the distance, a benevolent giant cloaked in vineyards, its slopes dotted with farms that supplied the city's feasts. "The mountain watches over us," elders said, toasting with raised goblets at festivals.Yet subtle omens stirred unease. Springs ran dry, and minor tremors shook pottery from shelves. Lucius felt the first real warning one humid August morning in 79 AD. As he bit into crusty bread slathered with honey, the ground quivered beneath his sandals. Dogs barked wildly, and a faint crack split the via. "Just the earth settling," Marcus chuckled, slapping his son's back. But Livia frowned, glancing at Vesuvius, where a thin plume of smoke curled lazily skyward.By midday, the air thickened with a strange sulfur scent. Birds wheeled erratically, abandoning nests. Lucius raced to the forum, where priests consulted augurs amid growing murmurs. A low rumble built, like distant war drums. Then Vesuvius awoke. A colossal column of ash and fire punched through the clouds, taller than any tower, glowing with infernal light. Panic flickered in the crowd—mothers clutched infants, senators debated flight. Lucius sprinted home, heart pounding. "Father! The gods stir!" Marcus peered out, his face ashen. "Pack what we can. To the harbor."As pumice pebbles began to patter like hail, the family gathered essentials: a pouch of coins, Livia's prized necklace, a wooden toy boat for Lucius. The city held its breath, unaware this was merely the prelude to annihilation. Vesuvius's fury brewed, ready to unleash rivers of death upon the vibrant world below.
