Chapter 61 - Chapter 61: Special Mission

Over these three months, Gojo Yoru never used Flying Thunder God to secretly leave Konoha and observe the war.

He wasn't interested in the Second Great Ninja War—not only because it wasn't his stage.

But also because… Gojo Yoru simply wasn't interested in "defending the homeland" in this world.

Yes, he was a "native" in the sense that he was born and raised here—but he was still a transmigrator from another world. Even as he began to blend into this world, Yoru still felt no real attachment to it.

He only felt goodwill toward a few important characters who, in his previous life, were just "paper people." If he happened to run into them, and it was only a small effort, Yoru didn't mind rewriting their destined fates.

And if it could bring him huge benefits—like Kushina and Orochimaru—then Yoru would actively approach, show goodwill, and slowly grow closer, eventually viewing them as people important to him.

If they faced danger or hardship, Yoru would help with everything he had—even if it meant exposing his space–time bloodline.

As for everyone else's life and death?

What did it have to do with him?

Besides that, there was another key reason Yoru didn't go observe the war.

At that time, his space–time Strength of a Hundred Seal had only just formed and hadn't yet stored space–time chakra. If he rashly left Konoha, he could easily be noticed by White Zetsu, drawing Uchiha Madara's attention.

Spore Technique, Mayfly Technique, and Impersonation Technique—these three techniques, in some sense, were no less terrifying than Shippuden's three "divine techniques": Impure World Reincarnation, Flying Thunder God, and the Eight Gates.

A clone split off by Spore Technique doesn't vanish even if the original dies—it becomes a fully independent individual.

And those clones can attach to other people and hide, transmitting information back to the original in real time.

Impersonation Technique—by absorbing someone else's chakra, you can not only take their appearance, but also perfectly copy their chakra signature. Even the person closest to them and the highest-tier sensory ninja can't tell real from fake.

If malice is concealed, even Kurama's malice-and-goodwill sensing becomes difficult.

But the most absurd technique of all was Mayfly.

Spore and Impersonation were basically ultimate versions of Clone and Transformation—just clones and disguises.

Mayfly combined the effects of Body Flicker and stealth.

When activated, the user merges with the earth, cutting off all presence—no one can detect their aura.

And beyond hiding, the user can travel at high speed through organic underground networks like plant roots and groundwater currents—barriers can't stop it.

It was precisely through this technique that Black Zetsu was never discovered by Ōtsutsuki Hagoromo and Ōtsutsuki Hamura. He even dared to manipulate Indra while those brothers were still alive.

If even ultimate dōjutsu couldn't find them, then Yoru—whose space–time chakra still couldn't fully leave his body and elevate his sensing into "sensing space"—naturally had no way to detect Black or White Zetsu either.

In fact, one reason he craved Flying Thunder God was because he feared being found and targeted by that thousand-year-old schemer.

Back then, he had no long-range teleportation and was still vulnerable to assassination.

But now…

In his room, Yoru stood before a full-length mirror, buttoning his shirt while looking at himself. He grinned.

"Things aren't what they used to be."

The boy in the mirror stood 1.7 meters tall—straight as a pine, upright and lean. With a few buttons still undone, his physique showed clear lines and balanced muscle.

As he finished buttoning and his hand passed over his chest, the black diamond mark slightly above his sternum was far darker than it had been three months ago.

After putting on a black jacket, aside from his white hair and striking white eyelashes, Yoru was now dressed entirely in black.

Except for being about twenty centimeters shorter and looking younger in the face, his "model" was starting to resemble Gojo Satoru more and more.

He took out two wristband storage scrolls—one to seal his chakra blade, the other to seal a tool pouch filled with Flying Thunder God kunai.

He tugged his sleeves to hide the wristbands, then took out the Thunder God Sword—normally just a flashlight-like hilt when inactive—and tucked it into a large inner pocket.

Patting the coat, which showed no bulge and didn't ruin his silhouette, Yoru felt satisfied with his setup.

After finishing preparations, he walked out with his hands in his pockets.

Kushina, waiting in the living room, immediately walked up. This time she didn't bicker—she looked worried and instructed him softly:

"Yoru, whatever the mission is, be careful. I'll be here waiting for you to come back."

"Don't worry. I'm the strongest."

Yoru couldn't help challenging himself not to laugh.

He patted Kushina's head, then remembered something and instructed her in return. "While I'm gone, don't go out into the wild for sensing training on your own. And always carry your Flying Thunder God kunai."

"Hehe… I always carry it. And I only wear clothes with Flying Thunder God formulas on them," Kushina said, patting her tool pouch, then lifting her sleeve to show the formula there.

"Smart. Wait for me to come back."

Yoru smiled, pinched her cute round cheeks, and then vanished without warning.

"Hokage-sama, genin Gojo Yoru reporting."

In the Hokage's office, Yoru met Sarutobi Hiruzen again after months.

Unlike his earlier over-the-top politeness, now that Yoru had mastered Flying Thunder God, he acted more and more casual in front of Hiruzen.

For example, instead of bowing, he simply raised his right hand in greeting like he was talking to someone familiar.

"Long time no see, Yoru. You've gotten taller again," Hiruzen said. He didn't mind Yoru's attitude at all—in fact, he liked the casualness. It meant they were no longer strangers.

Yoru was now part of the Hokage line, and would be one of Hiruzen's trump cards in the future.

Hiruzen puffed on his pipe. He didn't rush to assign a mission. Instead, he chatted like family and even advised:

"Even though Orochimaru isn't in the village, missions aren't only high-level out-of-village assignments. There are also D-rank jobs—helping the village and villagers with minor matters. Young people should develop social ties. Don't always think only about training."

"But… isn't it only chūnin who can take missions alone? I'm still a genin," Yoru asked, puzzled.

"The rule is that only chūnin can lead a team on C-rank missions. That doesn't include taking D-rank missions," Hiruzen said. "You are the team leader yourself. You can come accept D-rank missions alone."

"And with your current record, you already meet the requirement to participate in the chūnin exams."

"But the shinobi world isn't peaceful lately. This year's chūnin exams may be canceled. Instead, special promotions may happen through mission-based evaluation."

Hiruzen finally reached the main point, expression serious.

"So… there's a special mission I need to give you."

"I understand. Please give your orders, Hokage-sama," Yoru said, straightening his tone.
