Chapter 55 - Arrival

Ignatia lands in the plaza, her massive form touching down with surprising grace just a short distance from where Demon Lord Kaelith stands.

His reaction is immediate.

The air around him shimmers with magic, dark energy crackling across his robes. Crimson eyes flaring with power. His entire body tenses, every muscle coiled and ready. This is the stance of someone prepared to fight to the death against an overwhelming threat.

A dragon just landed in the middle of his city. Of course he's ready to fight.

Then Lucien and Eldrin jump down from Ignatia's back, landing lightly and waving.

[Lucien] "Demon Lord Kaelith!"

[Eldrin] "My apologies for the dramatic entrance!"

The change in Demon Lord Kaelith is instant. The magical pressure dissipates. His hands relax. His shoulders sag slightly as he lets out a long, shaky exhale. The tension drains from his posture like water from a broken dam.

[Kaelith] "Lucien. Eldrin."

His voice is strained, caught between relief and residual panic.

[Kaelith] "You could have warned me you were arriving on a dragon."

The rest of us begin disembarking, using Ignatia's tail as a staircase. The kids climb down first, followed by Liora and the others. Vesper is last, moving sluggishly, freshly awoken from her nap.

[Vesper] "Too many steps. Why are there so many steps."

[Sylphaeris] "It's a tail. There are literally six scales."

[Vesper] "That's six too many."

I make my way toward Demon Lord Kaelith and the others. They're still deep in conversation, Kaelith's voice rising slightly in what sounds like restrained frustration.

[Kaelith] "...proper diplomatic protocols exist for a reason, Eldrin. What if I had launched an attack? What if the city guard had mobilized? What if—"

[Wright] "Sorry about the entrance."

Demon Lord Kaelith turns to me, and I watch his expression shift in real-time. The frustration smooths out, replaced by practiced diplomatic composure. It's impressive how quickly he can switch modes.

[Kaelith] "Not to worry. I was just a little surprised to have a dragon descend upon my city."

There's still an edge in his voice, though. Something about "giving him a heart attack" and "at least a day's notice" filters through from his previous conversation.

[Kaelith] "You must be Wright."

[Wright] "I am. It's good to meet you."

We exchange pleasantries. He's polite, well-spoken, clearly practiced at diplomatic interactions despite the stress we just put him through.

Then his gaze shifts past me.

Jyne is walking toward us, her pale blue hair catching the sunlight.

Demon Lord Kaelith's eyes widen. His entire body goes rigid.

Then he drops to one knee so fast I hear the impact against the stone plaza.

[Kaelith] "Goddess! The honor of your presence in my kingdom is beyond measure! Eryndor is blessed by your visit!"

His head is bowed low, one hand pressed to his chest.

Jyne stops walking and sighs.

[Jyne] "Please get up. I don't need all of this. I'm just here for the hot springs."

Demon Lord Kaelith's head snaps up, his expression transforming into pure elation.

[Kaelith] "The Goddess herself praises our hot springs! This is the greatest honor Eryndor has ever received!"

His eyes are actually shining with joy. He's still on one knee, though, showing no signs of getting up.

[Jyne] "That's not. I wasn't praising them, I was just explaining why I'm here."

[Kaelith] "The Goddess explains her divine purpose! Truly, this day will be remembered in the chronicles of—"

[Jyne] "Please stop."

Movement catches my attention. Two new figures are approaching from a nearby building.

A demon woman with dark purple hair pulled back in an elegant style, dressed in formal robes that match Demon Lord Kaelith's color scheme. Her amber eyes are warm and welcoming, a polite smile on her face.

Beside her walks an elderly man in pristine white robes, simple in design but clearly well-maintained. His silver hair falls past his shoulders, and his gray eyes hold a gentle, grandfatherly quality. He's walking with obvious happiness, a serene smile on his face.

They're clearly here to greet us.

Then their eyes land on Jyne.

Both of them stop mid-stride.

The demon woman's reaction is immediate and graceful. She drops into a deep bow, one hand over her heart, her movements practiced and refined.

The elderly man freezes completely. He just stares, his mouth slightly open, his eyes growing wider and wider with each passing second.

Then it clicks.

Recognition floods his expression. His eyes become enormous, filled with overwhelming awe. His entire body starts trembling.

He drops into a bow so fast and so deep that I genuinely worry for his knees. The sound of the impact makes me wince. That's definitely going to bruise.

[Orell] "Goddess! My Goddess! I never thought… I never dreamed… in all my years… "

His voice is choked with emotion. Tears are already streaming down his face.

Jyne pinches the bridge of her nose.

[Jyne] "Vicar, please. I'm on vacation. No need for all of this."

[Orell] "A vacation! The Goddess takes a vacation! How wonderful! This makes you even more—"

[Jyne] "That's not the point I was trying to make."

Eldrin leans over to me, speaking quietly while the elderly man continues his emotional moment.

[Eldrin] "The elderly man is Pope Orell. He leads the religious organization dedicated to the Goddess. The demon woman is Chancellor Velira, Demon Lord Kaelith's right hand."

That explains his reaction. I'm also impressed how Chancellor Velira is maintaining her bow with perfect form while her boss is still on one knee and the Pope is sobbing into the plaza stones.

Behind me, I hear the kids whispering.

[Yuki] "Is this going to happen everywhere we go?"

[Takeshi] "Probably. Goddess Jyne is, you know, the Goddess."

[Aiko] "It must be exhausting for her."

Ignatia, perched on Yuki's shoulder in her small form, puffs out her tiny chest.

[Ignatia] "This is merely the appropriate response to the Creator of All Things. If anything, their reverence is insufficient."

Sylphaeris drifts over beside Jyne, looking around at the scene with obvious amusement.

[Sylphaeris] "Oh my, what a welcome! Three people prostrating themselves already. Should we start keeping count?"

We're gathering quite the spectacle. Arriving on a massive dragon. Three people bowing or kneeling to our group. People in the streets have stopped to stare, some pointing, others whispering to each other.

One demon child is tugging on her mother's sleeve, asking loud questions about why the pretty blue-haired lady made everyone fall down.

[Wright] "Everyone should get up. People are staring. We should head inside."

Demon Lord Kaelith snaps to attention. He rises smoothly to his feet, composure returning like a mask sliding back into place.

[Kaelith] "Of course. Please, follow me to the inn."

Chancellor Velira straightens from her bow with equal grace, gesturing for everyone to follow.

Pope Orell lifts his head but remains kneeling. Tears are still streaming down his face. He's smiling so wide it looks almost painful.

[Orell] "My life feels complete now."

His voice trembles with joy.

[Orell] "I have beheld the Goddess with my own eyes. Everything I have worked for, everything I have devoted my existence to, it has all led to this perfect moment."

[Velira] "Your Holiness, perhaps you should stand."

[Orell] "I cannot. My legs have forgotten how to function. I am paralyzed by divine grace."

[Velira] "That's the cobblestones. You've been kneeling on cobblestones."

We start moving toward the inn. I glance back at the Pope, still on his knees in the middle of the plaza, still crying, still smiling.

[Wright] "Should we help him?"

[Kaelith] "He'll recover eventually. The Pope is remarkably resilient despite his age."

He doesn't sound particularly concerned.

[Velira] "I'll send someone to collect him once he's able to walk again."

[Sylphaeris] "Should we at least get him some cushions? Those cobblestones look uncomfortable."

[Kaelith] "He won't move even if we offer them. Trust me."

Demon Lord Kaelith leads us through the streets of Luminara. The city is beautiful, built into the valley with buildings of dark stone and warm wood. Steam rises from various points throughout the city, marking the locations of natural hot springs. The architecture blends sharp, dramatic lines with flowing curves, creating something both imposing and elegant.

[Aiko] "This place is amazing! Look at how the buildings are designed around the hot springs!"

She's practically bouncing as she walks, taking in every detail with wide eyes.

[Takeshi] "I can already smell the minerals in the air. This is going to be great."

He takes a deep breath, looking more relaxed than he has in weeks.

Sylphaeris floats ahead of the group, weaving between buildings and popping back to share observations.

[Sylphaeris] "The craftsmanship here is exquisite! And the way they've channeled the steam for heating, very clever!"

She phases through a decorative archway, then emerges from a puff of steam.

[Sylphaeris] "Oh, and there's a bakery two streets over that smells absolutely divine."

[Vesper] "Bakery?"

Her head snaps up from where she'd been shuffling along with her eyes half-closed.

[Vesper] "What kind of bakery?"

[Sylphaeris] "The kind with bread."

[Vesper] "I'm going to the bakery."

She immediately starts walking in a different direction.

[Eldrin] "Vesper, we're going to the inn first."

[Vesper] "The inn can wait. Bread is time-sensitive."

[Eldrin] "No, it isn't."

[Vesper] "It is if I'm hungry."

Eldrin physically redirects her back toward the group. Vesper makes a sound of profound suffering.

The walk is short, and before long, the inn comes into view. It's magnificent.

The building rises three stories, constructed from dark volcanic stone shot through with veins of deep red crystal that pulse with faint inner light. The entrance is framed by massive pillars carved with intricate patterns of flames and flowing water, intertwining in a way that shouldn't work but does. Large windows with dark frames allow glimpses of the interior, where warm light spills out invitingly.

The roof is made of overlapping tiles in shades of charcoal and crimson, arranged in patterns that catch the eye. Steam rises from vents along the roofline, carrying the faint scent of mineral water and something floral.

A wide pathway of polished black stone leads to the entrance, lined with carefully maintained gardens. The plants are unusual, adapted to the volcanic soil, with dark leaves and flowers in brilliant reds and oranges.

[Yuki] "Wow! It's like something out of a fantasy story!"

[Takeshi] "This is incredible. How did they build something like this?"

[Aiko] "It's so pretty! The crystals in the stone are glowing!"

[Liora] "The architecture is quite different from what we have in our village. The use of volcanic materials is masterful."

She studies the stonework with genuine appreciation.

[Seraphina] "I've stayed in many fine establishments over the centuries, but this is truly impressive."

As we approach the entrance, a demon woman is there to greet us.

She appears middle-aged, with composed features and an air of professional competence. Her horns are smaller and more decorative than Demon Lord Kaelith's, swept back in elegant curves. Her hair is a deep auburn, pulled back in a practical style. She wears formal robes in earth tones with subtle embroidery, clearly the uniform of someone who manages an establishment of this caliber.

[Kaelith] "This is Madame Therys, the owner of Cinderwell Springs. She'll be taking care of you during your stay."

Madame Therys bows respectfully, though not as deeply as the others did to Jyne.

[Therys] "Welcome to Cinderwell Springs. It is our honor to host you."

Her voice is warm and professional.

[Kaelith] "This is the finest inn in all of Luminara, with access to the best hot springs in the region. I've rented the entire establishment for your group, so you may enjoy yourselves without interruption."

[Eldrin] "How thoughtful. Thank you for such generous arrangements."

Demon Lord Kaelith leans close to Madame Therys, whispering something I can't quite make out. Her eyes widen for just a moment before settling back to her calm demeanor with a quick nod.

Whatever he just told her, she's taking it seriously.

[Therys] "Please, allow me to show you around."

She gestures toward the entrance with practiced grace.

[Therys] "I think you'll find our facilities more than adequate for your needs."

We enter the inn.
