Chapter 5 - Into the Emberlands

The Ascendant Sect faded behind Kael as dawn bled into the sky, staining the clouds red like a fresh wound.

His first solo mission.

At least, that's what they'd called it.

"Solo," Kael muttered, adjusting the strap of his blade. "Which is funny, considering I'm absolutely being watched."

The path ahead twisted into the Emberlands, a scorched valley where the earth never fully cooled and Qi burned wild and unstable. Even the air felt angry.

Kael inhaled slowly, pulling his Qi inward like Lyra had shown him. The chaos inside his core responded—violent at first, then begrudgingly obedient.

Progress.

He stepped forward.

The ground cracked.

"Of course," he sighed. "Why wouldn't it?"

From the fissures crawled Ember Beasts—twisted creatures of stone and fire, eyes glowing like dying suns. Three of them. Maybe four.

Kael grinned despite himself.

"Alright," he said, blade humming with violet-silver light. "Let's see if I die alone or learn something."

They charged.

The Fight

Kael moved first, Qi surging through his limbs. His blade cleaved into the nearest beast, flames exploding outward. The recoil sent a shockwave up his arm—painful, sharp.

He skidded back.

"Note to self," he panted, dodging a claw the size of his torso. "Control still needs work."

Another beast slammed into him, sending him crashing into a pillar of scorched stone. Kael coughed, blood tasting like copper and ash.

Get up.

He forced his Qi inward, remembering the awakening circle. Not force. Flow.

The world slowed.

Violet and silver light wrapped his body, tighter this time. Controlled.

Kael smiled.

"There we go."

He surged forward, each strike precise now—less explosive, more lethal. One beast shattered. Another fell. The last tried to flee.

Kael hurled his blade.

It pierced clean through the creature's skull and embedded itself into the stone beyond.

Silence.

Kael stood there, breathing hard, chest burning—but alive.

Then he felt it.

A presence.

Slow. Cold. Watching.

Not So Solo

"You did better than expected."

Lyra stepped out from behind a jagged rock formation, arms crossed, expression unreadable.

Kael stared at her.

"…I knew it."

She raised a brow. "You're not upset."

"I'm relieved," he admitted. "Dying alone would've been embarrassing."

She almost smiled.

Almost.

"You're improving," she said, walking closer. "But your power is drawing attention. The Shadow Sect knows you're here."

Kael retrieved his blade. "You say that like it's new information."

Lyra stopped a few steps away. The wind tugged at her hair, her eyes darker than usual.

"This mission wasn't assigned randomly," she said quietly. "It was bait."

Kael's grin faded.

"For who?" he asked.

Her jaw tightened.

"For you," she said. "And…for me."

The truth hung between them, heavy and dangerous.

Kael searched her face. "How long were you planning to tell me?"

Lyra met his gaze. "When I was sure you could survive knowing."

Something in his chest twisted—not anger, not betrayal. Something worse.

Understanding.

"Well," he said softly, forcing a crooked smile, "good news. I survived."

Her eyes flickered. Guilt. Relief. Something warmer.

"You're an idiot," she said.

"Yeah," Kael replied. "But I'm your idiot now."

Silence stretched. Charged. Unspoken.

Then—movement.

Dark figures crested the ridge above them. Shadow Sect cultivators. Five. No…six.

Lyra's blades slid into her hands.

"Looks like the bait worked," she said.

Kael's Qi flared, steady and fierce.

He grinned.

"Good," he said. "I was worried this chapter would be boring."

Together, they turned to face the coming storm.

And somewhere deep within Kael's soul, something ancient stirred—awake, hungry, and ready.
