Chapter 48 - Investigation

Elion looked at the badge of one of the agents standing in front of him, a woman. He read the name on the badge and murmured, "Agent Joss Carter…"

The name sounded somewhat familiar, but Elion could not immediately remember who the agent standing before him was.

However, Elion was not surprised at all that they had come. He had witnessed the entire incident in which the killer Parker committed the murder in the street.

Moreover, he had already given Parker first aid before that. It was perfectly normal for the agents to find him and take his statement.

But for House and his group, this undoubtedly suggested that Elion probably had a much more mysterious life outside the hospital.

Elion, of course, had nothing to hide. There were very few things he cared about being known, and being related to the Parker case was definitely not one of them.

However, for them, who had rarely had to speak with agents, seeing two of them now sparked a great deal of curiosity.

They were left in shock as the agents took Elion away, momentarily at a loss for words.

Foreman looked as uncomfortable as if memories from his past had suddenly come rushing back to him.

"Will you be okay?"

"Don't worry, it's just an interrogation." One of the agents said goodbye to everyone who was with Elion, and Elion himself said, "I'll see you tomorrow at the hospital. I hope I'm not late."

"Wait, what is he being accused of?"

"It's not my place to tell you anything," Joss Carter replied, then added, "But we have your friend at a crime scene assisting a killer—nothing that involves you."

House was equally surprised by the agents who had suddenly appeared in front of them.

Originally, he had only wanted to investigate Elion's background to confirm that he could be a good assistant.

Unexpectedly, Elion had just given him a big surprise.

This caught House somewhat off guard.

Could the rookie I thought was a rookie actually be an experienced underground doctor?

However, this also proved that Elion was perfectly capable of serving as his assistant.

At the very least, Elion's mentality was absolutely stable, which is a basic quality that a good doctor must have.

Moreover, House himself did not seem to have any particular liking or dislike toward Elion's actions.

As a doctor, he does not discriminate against patients. As long as someone is a patient, the doctor will save them. It's that simple.

In the silence that followed, Cameron was the first to speak: "Are you sure Elion will be okay?"

Chase, who was familiar with the procedures of case handling by detectives, smiled, stood up, and said:

"Don't worry. Even if Elion is really guilty of something, the detectives still have a long way to go before they can press charges."

"Besides, if Elion wasn't involved, at most he'd be guilty of practicing medicine without a license."

"We'll find him an experienced lawyer; he won't even have to go to jail. He'll probably just have to pay a small fine."

Upon hearing Chase's words, Cameron finally breathed a sigh of relief and calmed down.

After spending those days together, she discovered that Elion was a very good colleague. With Elion around, it seemed that all difficulties could be resolved easily, and that feeling was very… reassuring.

At that moment, Foreman stood up and said apologetically, "Guys, I forgot that I promised my father I'd watch the game with him tonight. I have to head back. I'll treat everyone to a meal next time as an apology. Sorry."

After saying that, Foreman grabbed his coat and left in a hurry.

House watched Foreman's retreating figure thoughtfully.

"There's no game today; looks like Foreman is just looking for an excuse to leave."

House shook his head and took the French dishes that were in front of Foreman and Elion and placed them in front of himself.

"Alright, forget about them. Let's eat more."

After getting into the police car and arriving at the station, Elion answered dozens of repetitive questions.

After confirming that Elion had merely been passing by, Agent Carter opened the door and signaled that Elion was free to go.

At that moment, a group of handcuffed thugs was pushed out of the door by other detectives.

Accompanying the thugs was a disheveled homeless man who reeked of alcohol and gave off a nauseating stench.

Even if Elion had been ten meters away, he could smell it clearly; it was incredibly overpowering.

Elion, who instinctively covered his nose and was preparing to leave, suddenly stopped in his tracks.

He suddenly remembered having seen an agent named Carter somewhere before.

Yes… in Person of Interest.

And the homeless man in front of him, who also felt unsettlingly familiar, was none other than John Reese, Finch's number one enforcer.

A former member of the Air Force Special Forces, a former CIA agent, and an elite combatant.

Elion's eyes immediately lit up with surprise.

Unexpectedly, Frank was not just seeing Reese… he was standing right in front of him.

It was like finding a new path after walking for a long time in the darkness.

Rither's existence meant something else as well: that there was a machine in the United States similar to the prophet from Minority Report.

If he could gather a team with sufficient strength, he could seize it. Then the intelligence problem with the High Table would be easily resolved.

Elion grew more and more excited as he thought about it.

With the support of that machine, and even more so with the backing of the High Table, they could even face Umbrella in this world—if it existed.

Of course, Elion had never found any evidence that Umbrella existed in this new world.

The current level of technology also did not seem sufficient to support the development of such a superpower.

Elion shook his head. It was not the time to think about that.

He walked out of the police station and looked around.

Soon, he noticed a black Bentley parked at the corner.

It was the car Finch had sent to pick up Reese.

Elion stepped forward and knocked on the tinted window with his knuckles. The glass slowly rolled down, revealing a stern face that asked cautiously:

"What is it?"

Elion smiled faintly and said, "I want to talk to your boss… uh, your boss's name is Harold Finch, right?"

The atmosphere instantly tensed.

The people inside the car stiffened, slightly raising their hands.

It was as if several guns were already aimed at Elion's vital points from inside the vehicle.

The identity of the boss was a secret… and this man knew it.

The driver's first thought was that they were surrounded.

Fortunately, the man in the back seat received a communication at that moment.

After a brief exchange, everyone relaxed and lowered their invisible weapons.

"Get in. After picking someone up, we'll take you to our boss."

Elion nodded, opened the door, and got in.

It was not long before Rither also arrived, released on bail by his lawyer.

Inside the car, Rither looked curiously at Elion, whom he had only briefly met at the police station.

"Did you bail me out? Do I need to pay you back?"

Elion shook his head.

"No. The person we're about to meet is the one who saved you… I'm just another passenger, nothing more."
