Leo approached the door, extending one claw. With careful precision, he pricked the pad of his paw, drawing a single drop of blood. He pressed it against a specific symbol—a stylized lion's head carved at eye level.
The symbols flared bright gold.
Then the door swung open silently, revealing the chamber beyond.
Raqasha's meditation room was surprisingly simple. Circular, like everything else in the temple, with a domed ceiling painted in soft blues and silvers. Woven mats covered the floor. Shelves held scrolls, incense burners, and small carved figurines. A low sleeping platform occupied one side, piled with furs and embroidered cushions.
And in the center, resting on a pedestal carved from pale stone...
The Golden Stone.
It was about the size of Alex's fist, perfectly smooth, and radiated a warm, internal light like captured sunlight. Unlike the Black Crystal's swirling darkness, this stone seemed to glow with life and warmth.
"There," Leo whispered. "That's it."
[System: Target located! Objective (2/4) complete! Now comes the hard part—actually TAKING it without triggering the wards! Remember: righteous intent only! No greed, no malice, or the magic burglar alarm goes off!]
Alex took a deep breath, steadying himself.
Righteous intent. I'm not stealing this out of greed. I'm taking it so I can possibly go home. So Leo can be free from Raqasha's claim. So we can all survive this insane world.
He stepped forward, crossing the threshold into the chamber.
Nothing happened.
He took another step.
Still nothing.
The stone guardians Leo had mentioned—four of them, positioned at the cardinal directions around the chamber—remained perfectly still. They were carved from dark stone, each depicting a lion in mid-roar, and they radiated an aura of contained violence.
But they didn't move.
"Good. The wards aren't reacting. I'm doing this for the right reasons."
Alex approached the pedestal slowly, reverently. His hand reached out—
And that's when the heat hit.
Not the gradual build he'd been expecting. Not the manageable simmer the suppressant had been holding at bay.
This was a tsunami.
It crashed through his body like someone had lit him on fire from the inside out. His vision blurred. His legs buckled. And the scent—that cursed, sweet, citrusy scent that screamed "omega in heat"—exploded into the air like a pheromone bomb.
"No," Alex gasped, doubling over. "No, not now, the suppressant should have—"
[System: ERROR! ERROR! Conflict detected! The meditation chamber has residual divine blessing energy! It's reacting with the suppressant and accelerating your heat instead of suppressing it! Heat Status: CRITICAL—95% and climbing!]
"You couldn't have WARNED me about that?!" Alex choked out.
Both Naga and Leo reacted instantly.
Naga surged forward, coils wrapping around Alex before he could hit the ground. "Alex—"
"The stone," Alex managed through gritted teeth, even as his body shook with need. "Get the stone—we came here for the stone—"
Leo moved like lightning, crossing the chamber and scooping the Golden Stone from its pedestal in one fluid motion.
The moment he lifted it, the stone guardians' eyes lit up with crimson light.
Their heads turned in perfect unison, focusing on the intruders.
And they began to move.
"RUN!" Leo roared.
Naga didn't need to be told twice. With Alex clutched protectively against his chest and Leo bolting ahead with the stone, they fled the meditation chamber just as the first guardian lunged.
Stone claws scraped against stone floor with a sound like grinding metal.
They hit the servant staircase at full speed, taking the steps three at a time. Behind them, the guardians gave chase—slower than living creatures but relentless, their footfalls shaking the entire structure.
"They're not supposed to leave the chamber!" Leo panted as they burst onto the second level.
"TELL THEM THAT!" Alex shrieked, clinging to Naga as they careened around a corner.
The main worship hall was just ahead—
And standing in the center of it, blocking their exit, was Raqasha.
She was even more intimidating in person than Alex had imagined. Tall, petite but powerfull looking woman, with a voluminous hair of deep auburn that seemed to shimmer with its own inner light. Her eyes were pure gold—not just the irises, but the entire eye, glowing with divine authority.
And she looked furious.
"LEO," she said, her voice carrying supernatural resonance that made the air vibrate. "You DARE defile the sacred temple? You as the tribe's most prized warrior, you DARE steal the tribe's most precious artifact?"
"It's not stealing if it's for a good cause!" Alex yelled, then immediately regretted it because he was currently draped over Naga like a heat-addled disaster and probably not in the best position to make legal arguments.
Raqasha's glowing eyes fixed on him.
Then her nostrils flared.
"And you brought a FEMALE in HEAT into the HOLY TEMPLE?!" Her voice rose to a shriek that could probably be heard in the next territory. "This is SACRILEGE!"
"He's not a female!" Leo protested, still running. "He's—it's complicated!"
"I DON'T CARE ABOUT COMPLICATED! THE SPIRITS ARE SCREAMING!"
Behind them, the stone guardians burst into the main hall, their eyes blazing.
Ahead, Raqasha was gathering golden light in her palms—divine magic, preparing to strike.
They were trapped.
Alex, through the haze of heat and panic and the absolute insanity of the situation, had exactly one thought: We are so dead.
[System: CRITICAL SITUATION! Escape route: BLOCKED! Enemy: ENRAGED PSYCHIC PRIESTESS! Stone guardians: ACTIVE! Heat status: MAXIMUM! Survival probability: 2%! Would you like to spend your remaining SP on a miracle? :D]
"YES!" Alex screamed. "WHATEVER IT COSTS, DO IT!"
[System: Activating Emergency Protocol: DEUS EX MACHINA!]
And then—
The temple shook.
Not from the guardians. Not from Raqasha's magic.
From outside.
A roar split the air—massive, ancient, and absolutely furious.
Through the temple's high windows, a shadow passed overhead, blotting out the stars.
Silver scales gleaming in the moonlight.
Enormous wings creating hurricane winds.
The dragon they'd seen that morning had returned.
And it was headed straight for the temple.
"OH COME ON!" Alex shrieked. "WHAT ARE THE ODDS?!"
[System: Apparently 100%! Surprise! The dragon's one of the sacred stone guardians too! And it sensed the Golden Stone being taken! WHOOPS! :D]
Raqasha's eyes went wide. "The Silver Guardian—? But that's impossible, it hasn't woken in three hundred—"
The dragon's tail smashed through the temple wall.
Stone exploded inward.
And in the chaos—the screaming, the collapsing architecture, the divine magic going haywire, the stone guardians freezing in confusion—
Naga transform into his beast from and grabbed both Alex and Leo with his tail and bolted through the hole in the wall.
They ran.
They ran like the world was ending.
Behind them, the dragon roared again, and Raqasha was shouting something about "sacred intervention" and "SOMEONE EXPLAIN THIS—"
But Alex couldn't hear any of it over the sound of his own heartbeat and Naga's frantic hissing and Leo's panting breaths and the system's cheerful narration:
[System: ESCAPE SUCCESSFUL! Objectives: (3/4) complete! Remaining objective: Don't go into heat at the worst possible moment... FAILED! But you got the stone! And you're alive! And there's a dragon chasing you! ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: "When It Rains, It Pours (Dragons)"!]
They ran into the night, toward the jungle, toward safety.
And behind them, the temple burned with divine fire, a dragon circled overhead, and Raqasha's furious screams echoed across the savanna.
Just another day in the beast world.
Just another absolutely insane day.
