The werewolf did not fall. It unraveled. The massive body convulsed once, thick hide splitting along glowing fractures that ran like fault lines through muscle and bone. Then it collapsed inward, folding in on itself as if crushed by invisible pressure. Fur, flesh, and shadow compressed into a shrinking knot of darkness until even that was gone, leaving only drifting motes that faded into the stale cave air. No corpse.
No victory roar. No relief. Silence pressed in, heavy and uncomfortable. Dorian stood where he had delivered the final blow, dagger still raised, lightning crackling weakly along the blade before sputtering out. His chest heaved. His arms trembled.
Not from fatigue alone, but from the way the Slayer inside him refused to fully settle, pacing behind his ribs like a predator denied its kill. Around him, the others began to move. System light flickered softly, not in chests, not with spectacle, but with quiet certainty. Items manifested directly in front of each party member, forming out of pale glyphs and collapsing into solid shape. Evan let out a sharp breath as a pair of reinforced gauntlets appeared at his feet. He bent down, lifting one experimentally. The metal hummed faintly as it locked around his forearm. "Holy shit," he muttered. "These feel… alive."
Lena gasped as a mantle of phoenix-feather silk settled over her shoulders, warmth blooming through her core as embers danced briefly along the hem before vanishing. She swallowed hard, eyes shining. "My fire," she whispered. "It's calmer. Like it listens now." Helena stared at the ring that materialized in her palm, dark crystal swallowing ambient mana the moment she closed her fingers around it. The shadows at her feet responded instantly, tightening, deepening. Wilhelm knelt near a small cluster of tomes and bone-charms, fingers hovering but not touching yet, his expression unreadable as his eyes traced the sigils with academic fascination rather than hunger. Dorian waited but nothing appeared. No chest, weapon or armor. Just a quiet chime and a soft pressure behind his eyes as a System pane resolved itself.
XP AWARDED
Performance: Exceptional
Contribution: Decisive
Raw experience poured into him, heavy and immediate. Heat flooded his limbs. His bones ached, the familiar sensation of being reforged from the inside out. But still, no item. Helena noticed first. "Dor…" she said softly, stepping closer. He shook his head once. "It's fine." It wasn't. The realization sat cold and sharp in his chest. The System hadn't forgotten him. It had evaluated him and decided he didn't need the same kind of reward. Different rules. Again.
Level notifications began stacking for the others. Evan winced as his interface flickered. "That's… two levels," he said with a weak laugh. "I feel like I got torn apart and rebuilt wrong." Lena nodded, rubbing her temples. "Same. My mana flow's different. Faster. Hotter." Helena's eyes flicked rapidly as her own screen updated. She swallowed, forced her expression steady, but Dorian caught the tightening in her jaw. Then his interface pulsed again. Once. Twice.
LEVEL UP
LEVEL UP
CURRENT LEVEL: 15
The Slayer icon beside his class designation darkened, sharpening in definition. Not brighter. Heavier. A new window forced itself open, eclipsing the rest.
SKILL SELECTION AVAILABLE
Choose One:
Lightning Lance
Active Skill
Condense lightning into a focused projectile.
Converts mana directly into ranged electrical damage.
Increased penetration at higher Agility thresholds.
Dorian snorts softly. The description is simple. Almost insulting. "I already do that." Not as clean or efficient but it works. Why would he waste a permanent slot formalizing something instinct already handles? He flicks it aside without guilt.
Predator's Focus
Toggle Skill
Enhances visual, auditory, and threat-processing faculties when hostile entities are present.
Predicts movement trajectories before execution.
Identifies behavioral patterns, intent spikes, and structural weaknesses. Perception effectiveness increased significantly.
A warning line appears beneath it.
Extended use will result in mental fatigue, migraines, and sensory overload.
This one feels… heavier. The text loads slower, as if the System itself hesitates. Dorian feels it then. A pull. Not hunger or rage but awareness. This isn't about killing faster. It's about seeing first. The half-second before a strike. He doesn't smile. This one scares him. Which means it matters.
Bloodbound Reflex
Passive Skill
Reaction speed increases proportionally to missing health. Maximum effect achieved at critical vitality thresholds. Repeated activation increases injury severity and recovery time.
Dorian stares at it longer than he wants to. This skill doesn't prevent suffering. It rewards it. The closer he is to death, the sharper he becomes. It fits him too well. Which is exactly why he moves on.
Mark Quarry
Active Skill
Designate a single hostile entity as prey.
Increases damage dealt to the marked target.
User receives increased damage from all other sources.
Effect ends only upon the target's death.
Tunnel vision incarnate. Obsession given structure. He imagines locking onto one enemy and burning the world down around them just to make sure they fall first. Useful and dangerous but too narrow for what's coming.
Veilstep
Active Skill
Allows the user to partially enter shadow for a split second. Breaks line of sight. Repositions user within short range. Cannot be chained repeatedly.
Assassin mobility which allows clean escapes and controlled repositioning. He considers it but then looks back at Predator's Focus. Veilstep helps you avoid danger. Predator's Focus tells you where danger is born. Dorian exhales slowly. He's done reacting to the danger he needs to understand before it even happens. His selection feels less like a choice and more like an admission. He reaches out and touches the icon.
SKILL SELECTED: PREDATOR'S FOCUS
SLAYER PATH CONFIRMED
The world sharpens instantly as the edges define themselves. Heartbeats separate into individual rhythms. Movement becomes intention before motion. For half a second, it's too much. Then he learns to breathe again. His eyes burn faintly red as the skill settles. He gains a semblance of control as everything quiets down. Helena gasped. "New skill? Your eyes look…" She trails off. "Badass!" Evan yells excitedly with a large grin on his face.
Dorian caught his reflection in a shard of obsidian near the cave wall. His eyes glowed faintly red. Not monstrous but alert and aware. They regrouped slowly, exhaustion settling as adrenaline drained away. When they turned toward the cave mouth, ready to leave, the world answered them with finality. The air shimmered and a translucent barrier slammed down across the entrance with a sound like glass struck by a hammer. Helena recoiled. "No!" A System message appeared, calm and merciless.
NOTICE
Waves have resumed.
[You really need to be faster!]
Exit unavailable until the current wave ends.
They were locked in and from a narrow fissure overlooking the forest, they watched as Wave Six advanced. Monsters marched between the trees in disciplined formation. Shields locked. Weapons raised. Figures made of bone, armor, and shadow moved without hesitation. No panic. Helena dropped to her knees, hands shaking. "Without us…," She whispered. "They are all going to die.." Dorian didn't move. Predator's Focus tracked the march automatically, calculating trajectories, casualties, inevitability. Winning hadn't freed them. It had only moved the bars. And now, they were forced to watch from inside the cage.
