Chapter 32 - Chapter 32 – The Weight of Silence

Ren woke up slowly.

The first thing he noticed was the smell. It wasn't the scent of the Uchiha house, nor the forest they had passed through during the mission. It was a light aroma of herbs, clean wood, and something slightly sweet — typical of a small, organized hospital, simple but well cared for.

The second detail came right after: his entire body felt heavy, as if every muscle had been pushed to its limit and was only now starting to complain.

He tried to move and felt an immediate sharp pain in his abdomen.

He didn't quite groan, but the air escaped his lungs in a stronger breath than expected. The pain wasn't sharp — it was deep, constant, like it had always been there, just waiting for him to remember it.

"Don't move so much…" a voice said, low and far too close.

Ren slowly turned his head and found Ino sitting beside the bed, leaning forward with her elbows resting on the mattress. Her eyes were slightly red, as if she had stayed awake longer than she should have, and her blonde hair — usually flawless — was tied up carelessly, a few loose strands falling over her face.

For a moment, he just stared at her.

"You… woke up," she murmured, as if she was still processing her own words.

"Apparently," Ren replied, his voice weaker than he expected.

Ino let out a short, humorless laugh and immediately placed her hand on his arm, as if she wanted to touch him but was afraid of hurting him.

"You shouldn't even be trying to talk right now," she said. "The doctor said you lost a lot of blood."

Ren blinked, confused. "I did?"

"Ren…" Ino took a deep breath, looking away for a moment. "You got cut in the abdomen. A real cut."

It took him a few seconds to process that.

The last thing he remembered clearly was the fight — Shikamaru's shout, Ino in danger, his body moving before his mind could even finish thinking. After that, everything became fragmented: the impact, the warm sensation, the metallic taste in his mouth… and then darkness.

"And the mission?" he asked.

Ino answered quickly. "The mission was completed. We didn't have any more problems after that confrontation."

"And you guys?"

"We're fine," she said, but the way she spoke didn't match the expression on her face.

Ren tried to adjust himself slightly on the bed, carefully, feeling his muscles protest. Only then did he notice the bandages wrapped around his torso — firm, well done, smelling of antiseptic and medicinal herbs.

"So… everything turned out fine," he murmured.

Ino closed her eyes for a moment. "No. It didn't," she said softly.

Ren frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"

She took a while to answer. Her fingers lightly gripped the sheet, as if she needed something physical to hold onto.

"You only got hurt because you went to save me." The silence that followed wasn't empty. It was heavy.

Ren opened his mouth to respond, but Ino spoke first.

"I froze," she continued. "I saw him coming. I saw it. And even so… I couldn't react. I just stood there, not knowing what to do. And if you hadn't shown up—"

"Ino." She looked up immediately.

Ren was serious, but there was no accusation in his eyes. Only attention. "You're alive. That already means you reacted," he said.

"But it wasn't enough," she argued, her voice trembling. "If I were stronger, faster, anything… you wouldn't have taken that hit because of me."

Ren took a deep breath, feeling the pain respond to the movement, but ignoring it.

"Ino, I didn't go there thinking of you as a problem," he said. "I went because you needed help."

"But you were the one who paid the price."

"And I'd do it again."

She stared at him, surprised.

"Without thinking twice," he added.

Ino stayed silent, her eyes locked onto his, as if she was trying to find some logic in his words. "You say that like it's something simple."

"It's not simple," Ren replied. "But that's how I feel."

She swallowed hard.

"I stayed by your side all night," she confessed. "The doctor said you were out of danger, but… even so, I couldn't leave."

Ren felt something different in his chest. It wasn't pain. It was a strange, warm tightness that didn't come from the wound. "You didn't have to—"

"I did," she interrupted. "I needed to make sure you were going to wake up."

He stayed silent for a few seconds, taking that in. "You were scared," he said finally.

Ino let out a soft laugh, but this time there was something broken in the sound. "Scared? I was terrified."

Ren tried to lift his hand, feeling his body complain, but he still made the movement, slowly, until his fingers gently touched hers.

Ino froze at the contact.

"It wasn't your fault," he said calmly. "On missions, someone always ends up getting hurt. This time it was me. Next time it could be you, or Shikamaru."

"I don't want it to be you," she replied immediately.

Ren looked at her. "Then don't be the kind of person who runs away when things get hard," he said. "Be the kind who moves forward. Even when you're afraid."

She took a deep breath, feeling her eyes burn. "You talk like everything is already resolved inside you."

"It's not," he said. "But… when I saw you in danger, I didn't think. My body just moved."

Ino looked away, but didn't let go of his hand. "That's what scares me the most," she murmured. "You put yourself in front without even realizing it."

Ren gave a weak half-smile. "And you stay by my side without even realizing it."

She blinked. "What?"

"You stayed here all night, barely slept, even without any obligation," he repeated.

The silence that followed was different. It wasn't heavy. It was dense in another way.

Ino gently squeezed his fingers. "I thought I was going to lose you," she said, almost in a whisper.

Ren felt his heart beat faster. "I'm here," he replied.

She took a deep breath, as if she had been holding something in for a long time. "Ren… I don't want to see you getting hurt because of me anymore."

"Then get stronger with me."

Ino slowly looked up. "With you?"

"With me," he confirmed. "That way, next time, neither of us has to pay the price alone."

She looked at him for a few seconds, and then something changed in her expression. It wasn't just guilt anymore. It was determination.

"Promise you won't do this alone again?" she asked.

Ren thought for a moment. "I'll try, but no promises," he replied honestly.

Ino let out a soft laugh. "You inspire zero confidence with that promise."

"But you know that whenever you need me, you can trust me."

She shook her head, smiling slightly, her eyes still moist. "Idiot…"

Ren gently squeezed her fingers. He didn't say anything — he just smiled. The most sincere smile he had given in years.

The room remained silent, filled only by the sound of Ren's breathing and Ino's constant presence beside the bed. There were no grand declarations. No eternal promises.

Just the quiet certainty that, after that mission, something between them had changed. It was no longer just teamwork.

It was care. And fear of loss. And the strange feeling that, from that moment on, neither of them was walking completely alone anymore.
