Chapter 32 - A Farewell Without Goodbye

Eliaria quietly lowered herself beside Leo, leaving only a small distance between them—a distance too short to hide the unease weighing heavily upon her heart. Her hands rested together upon her lap, fingers absentmindedly intertwining and separating, as though they were desperately searching for a way to calm the storm of emotions she could no longer suppress.

Silence settled between them.

Not the awkward silence of strangers, nor the empty silence born of indifference.

It was the silence of two people burdened by far too many words, yet unable to decide which one deserved to be spoken first.

Neither of them said a thing.

Even the gentle night breeze drifting through the ancient trees seemed to respect the fragile moment, whispering softly as it passed, while countless stars shimmered overhead, silently bearing witness beneath the endless canopy of the heavens.

Leo kept his gaze fixed upon the distant horizon, his thoughts wandering far beyond the forest surrounding them.

For a fleeting moment...

An idea crossed his mind.

He considered taking Eliaria with him on the next stage of his journey.

But the thought lived only for an instant before he discarded it without hesitation.

No...

This was not where she belonged.

Her place was here.

Among her people.

Beside her family.

Within the forest that had witnessed her birth and watched her grow.

Perhaps she would not understand the meaning of that decision today.

Perhaps she would even resent it.

But one day...

When time had tempered her heart with experience and she looked back upon this night with wiser eyes...

She would understand.

Remaining here was the path that offered her the brightest future.

It was, without question...

The best choice for her.

The silence lingered until it was finally broken by Eliaria's voice.

It was gentle.

Soft.

Yet beneath its calm surface trembled emotions she struggled in vain to conceal.

"...Master."

Leo slowly turned toward her.

"Yes?"

Eliaria drew in a slow breath, gathering what little courage she had left.

Although her voice sounded composed, the faint hesitation hidden beneath every word was impossible to miss for someone who knew her well.

"It seems..."

"...you'll be leaving soon."

Silence returned once again.

Leo did not answer immediately.

He simply looked at her quietly, waiting.

Meanwhile, Eliaria smiled faintly—a smile carrying equal parts gratitude and sorrow.

"The time we spent together..."

"...wasn't very long."

"But..."

"It became one of the most precious chapters of my life."

She lowered her eyes.

Fragments of countless memories drifted through her mind.

"When I was imprisoned..."

"When I had already lost every reason to keep living..."

"You were the one who reached out your hand to me."

"You saved me when I believed my life had already come to an end."

"You treated me with kindness..."

"Even though you owed me nothing."

"And then..."

"You taught me magic."

"Not simply so I could become stronger..."

"But so I would one day possess the strength to protect myself."

"And in the end..."

"You brought me home."

"You returned me to my people..."

"...and to my family."

Leo listened quietly from beginning to end.

He never interrupted.

Never attempted to downplay her gratitude.

Instead, he simply allowed her to empty every emotion that had remained hidden within her heart.

When she finally looked at him again, her emerald eyes had become astonishingly clear.

"You've done more for me than I could ever repay."

"I don't think I'll ever be able to return even a fraction of what you've given me."

She let out a small, self-conscious laugh.

"So..."

"I won't ask something selfish."

"I won't ask you to stay."

"And I won't ask you to take me with you."

"I know..."

"Each of us has our own path to walk."

She paused for a long moment before speaking again, her voice barely louder than a whisper.

"But..."

"I have one request."

"No matter how many years pass..."

"No matter how great the distance between us becomes..."

"I want you..."

"...to visit me."

"At least once."

The words lingered quietly in the air.

Leo remained silent.

For several moments, he simply looked at her.

Then...

A faint smile appeared upon his face.

One carrying quiet satisfaction.

"When..."

"...did you grow this much?"

He had expected her to cling to him.

To ask to accompany him.

Perhaps even to beg him not to leave.

Instead...

She had accepted reality with remarkable maturity.

More importantly...

The lingering concern he had quietly carried for her future began to fade.

"It seems..."

"I no longer have any reason to worry about her."

At last, Leo spoke.

His calm voice carried a sincerity rarely heard from him.

"To be honest..."

"This journey has been... enjoyable."

"For the first time in a very long while..."

"I stepped outside the life I had always known."

"I saw the world from an entirely different perspective."

"I began rebuilding my own strength."

"I met people I never would have encountered otherwise."

"And experienced things I never imagined would become part of my life."

A small smile touched his lips.

"There were many moments that confused me."

"Many things I couldn't understand at first."

"But..."

"I can say this without the slightest hesitation."

"You became..."

"...a precious part of that journey."

Eliaria stopped breathing.

She froze where she sat.

Her mind went completely blank.

She couldn't answer.

In truth...

Not even in her boldest imagination had she expected to hear words like these from someone as reserved and emotionally restrained as Leo.

But before she could recover...

He continued.

"And because of that..."

"I promise you."

Meeting her eyes directly, Leo spoke with unwavering conviction.

"In the name of Leo Dainhart..."

"No matter how many years pass..."

"No matter how great the distance separating us becomes..."

"I will come."

"I promise I'll visit you."

The moment those words reached her ears...

The tears she had struggled so desperately to suppress finally escaped.

They rolled gently down her cheeks.

Not tears of grief.

But tears of relief.

Of gratitude.

And of a promise her heart had longed to hear.

Leo smiled softly.

"When we meet again..."

"I'll be looking forward to seeing how far your mastery of magic has progressed."

Eliaria quickly wiped away her tears before raising her head once more.

The hesitation in her eyes had vanished.

Only determination remained.

"I promise."

"I won't disappoint you."

Leo nodded quietly, a faint smile lingering upon his face.

After another peaceful silence, Eliaria asked,

"When do you plan to leave?"

"In about a month."

"And..."

"Where will you go afterward?"

Leo lifted his eyes toward the star-filled sky.

"My first destination will be the Dainhart Estate."

"I'll stay there for a while."

"And after that..."

A hint of anticipation appeared in his expression.

"I'll begin a completely new chapter of my life."

"At a place called..."

"...the Academy."

The hours slipped away unnoticed.

They spoke without pause.

About their journey.

About magic.

About the memories they had created together.

About the uncertain futures awaiting each of them.

It felt as though fate itself had granted them one final night to say everything that had remained unspoken until now.

Eventually...

Weariness claimed them both.

Neither resisted it.

Beneath the endless sky, accompanied by the quiet whisper of the forest breeze, they gradually drifted into sleep where they sat.

To anyone passing by...

It would have looked like nothing more than an ordinary evening.

A simple conversation between a teacher and his student.

But for the two of them...

It was far more than that.

It was a farewell spoken without ever uttering the word goodbye.

A silent promise that their paths would cross again, no matter how many years—or how many roads—stood between them.

And regardless of what trials the future might bring...

One truth would never change.

That night would remain forever engraved within both of their hearts—

A memory beyond the reach of time.

A bond no distance could ever erase.
