Chapter 27 - THE DRESS

Chapter Thirty-One: The Dress

Writer's POV

The hotel suite was chaos.

Makeup artist, hair stylist, photographer, and half a dozen women in various states of undress and excitement. Bridesmaids in deep purple dresses Sofia, Amy, two cousins, and Evan's assistant Claire, who'd become a surprising friend over the past year.

Fabiola sat in front of the mirror in her robe while someone pinned her hair into an elegant updo, leaving soft curls to frame her face.

"You look like a princess," Sofia gushed, watching over the stylist's shoulder. "Evan's going to lose his mind when he sees you."

"He better," Amy said, sipping champagne. "After everything you two have been through."

"Amy," Fabiola warned.

"What? I'm just saying you've earned this happiness. Both of you."

The makeup artist stepped back. "All done. Want to see?"

Fabiola opened her eyes.

The woman in the mirror looked like her but... more. Her skin glowed, enhanced by subtle highlighting. Her eyes looked huge, dramatic without being overdone. Her lips were the perfect shade of rose.

"Oh my God," Sofia breathed. "You're gorgeous."

"Language," Rosa said automatically from across the room, but her eyes were wet.

"It's perfect," Fabiola whispered. "Thank you."

The dress hung on the back of the bathroom door, ethereal in its white garment bag.

Fabiola had found it six months ago and knew immediately it was the one. Fitted lace bodice that hugged her curves, flowing tulle skirt that made her feel like she was floating, delicate off-the-shoulder sleeves.

It had cost more than she'd ever spent on anything in her life.

Evan had insisted on paying for it. "Let me do this," he'd said. "Let me give you the wedding dress of your dreams."

Now, as Sofia and Amy carefully lifted it off the hanger, Fabiola felt tears prick her eyes.

This was real.

She was getting married.

To Evan.

Her Evan.

"Don't cry!" the makeup artist said in alarm. "You'll ruin your makeup!"

Fabiola laughed, fanning her face. "I'm not crying. I'm just..."

"Happy," Rosa finished softly, appearing at her side. "You're happy, mija."

"I am, Mama."

Rosa's hands trembled as she helped Fabiola step into the dress. Together, the women buttoned the dozens of tiny buttons up the back, each one a small commitment bringing the dress to life around her body.

When they finished, Fabiola turned to face the full-length mirror.

And gasped.

The dress fit like it had been made for her body specifically which it had. The lace hugged every curve, the skirt flowed like water, the off-shoulder sleeves made her collarbones look elegant and her shoulders strong.

She looked like a bride.

Evan's bride.

"Oh, mija." Rosa's voice broke. She pressed her hands to her mouth, tears streaming down her face. "You're so beautiful. So, so beautiful."

Sofia was crying too, not even trying to hide it. "I can't believe my big sister is getting married."

Amy grabbed tissues, dabbing at her own eyes. "Okay, I said I wasn't going to cry, but this is ridiculous. You look amazing, Fab."

The other bridesmaids chorused their agreement, snapping photos, exclaiming over every detail.

But Fabiola barely heard them.

She stared at herself in the mirror and thought about nine-year-old her, bringing a dandelion to a sad boy who crushed it in his fist.

Thought about twelve-year-old her, refusing to leave him alone even when he pushed her away.

Thought about seventeen-year-old her, choosing him over safe and easy.

Thought about every moment since the pain, the separation, the reunion, the healing.

All of it leading to this moment.

To this dress.

To this day.

"Fabiola?" Amy's voice was gentle. "You sure about this? Last chance to run."

Fabiola turned from the mirror, looked at her best friend the one who'd watched her fall apart and put herself back together, who'd questioned her choices and supported her anyway.

"I'm sure," Fabiola said, and her voice was steady. Strong. Certain. "I've never been more sure of anything in my entire life."

"Even though he's.." Amy hesitated.

"Intense? Complicated? Sometimes too much?" Fabiola smiled. "Yes. Even though all of that. Maybe because of all of that."

Amy nodded slowly. "Okay then. Let's get you married."

Sofia squealed, bouncing on her toes. "This is happening! This is really happening!"

Rosa wiped her eyes, tried to compose herself. "My baby girl. All grown up. Getting married." Fresh tears fell. "I remember when you were born so tiny, so perfect. And now..." She cupped Fabiola's face. "Now you're a woman. A bride. And so, so beautiful."

"Mama, you're going to make me cry.."

"No crying!" the makeup artist interjected. "Nobody cries until after the ceremony!"

They all laughed, the tension breaking.

Claire handed Fabiola the bouquet white peonies and deep purple roses, exactly as she'd imagined.

"Ready?" Amy asked, holding out her arm.

Fabiola took one last look in the mirror.

White dress. Perfect hair. Makeup that made her glow.

But most importantly a smile that came from deep inside. From a place of certainty and love and unshakeable faith that this was right.

That Evan was right.

That they were right.

"I'm ready," she said.

And she was.

Ready to walk down the aisle.

Ready to say "I do."

Ready to become Evan's wife.

Ready for forever.

Whatever that meant.

Whatever came next.

She was ready.

The women gathered around her her mother, her sister, her best friend, her bridesmaids and for a moment, they all just stood there.

A moment of pure feminine joy.

Of love and support and celebration.

Then Sofia grabbed her phone. "Wait! We need a picture! Everyone together!"

They crowded around Fabiola, arms linked, faces pressed close, bouquets held high.

The photographer snapped the photo.

Later, when Fabiola looked at it, she'd see the happiness radiating from all of them.

See the love in her mother's tearful eyes.

See Sofia's unbridled excitement.

See Amy's protective support.

See herself glowing, radiant, sure.

A bride on her wedding day.

About to marry the love of her life.

Unaware that everything was about to change.

Unaware of what waited in the shadows.

Unaware that some promises never truly break.

And some brothers never truly die.

But in that moment, captured forever in pixels and memory

Fabiola Morales was happy.

Perfectly, completely, radiantly happy.

And that was enough.

For now.
