Chapter 108 - The Fifth Circle

The child looked at Aurelia.

No one moved.

The silver light around the child pulsed once.

Then again.

The entire chamber seemed to breathe with it.

Aurelia stared into those strange, colorless eyes.

"Choose what?"

The child tilted its head.

"You."

Aurelia frowned.

"I don't understand."

"You don't have to understand."

The child's voice was calm.

"You only have to choose."

Behind Aurelia, Rowan stepped forward.

"Don't listen to it."

The child's eyes moved toward him.

For the first time, its expression changed.

Not anger.

Recognition.

"Rowan."

Rowan froze.

"You know me?"

"I know everyone who came here."

The golden-eyed girl moved closer to Aurelia.

"It's Choice."

The red-eyed boy laughed quietly.

"Finally."

Lena looked between them.

"What happens if she chooses?"

The golden-eyed girl answered.

"Everything changes."

"And if she doesn't?"

The red-eyed boy smiled.

"Everything still changes."

Lena's face tightened.

"That doesn't help."

"It wasn't meant to."

Aurelia ignored them.

Her eyes remained on the silver-haired child.

"You said you were created."

The child nodded.

"By Mother."

"Why were you hidden?"

"Because Mother was afraid."

Aurelia glanced toward the dark chamber where the remains of the old structure were still collapsing.

"Afraid of you?"

"No."

The child looked at the golden-eyed girl.

"She was afraid of what I could do."

Aurelia's stomach tightened.

"What can you do?"

The child stepped forward.

"Choose."

Aurelia shook her head.

"That isn't an answer."

"It is the only answer that matters."

A sudden tremor shook the ground.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Rowan grabbed Lena's arm.

"We need to move."

Aurelia didn't.

She couldn't.

Something inside her was pulling her toward the child.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

A memory.

A feeling.

A certainty she couldn't explain.

The child raised its hand.

The air between them shimmered.

Aurelia gasped.

She saw a room.

Not the chamber.

Another place.

A woman stood inside.

Mother.

But she looked different.

Younger.

Terrified.

In her arms was a newborn child.

Aurelia.

Beside her stood the golden-eyed girl.

Then the red-eyed boy.

Three children.

Three different lights.

Memory.

Possibility.

Consequence.

Mother looked at them.

"I can control these three."

Her voice trembled.

"But not Choice."

Aurelia watched helplessly.

Mother turned toward a fourth cradle.

Empty.

"You cannot exist."

The vision changed.

Mother was crying.

The silver-haired child stood before her.

"You made me."

"I made a mistake."

The child looked at her.

"Then destroy me."

Mother shook her head.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because you are the part of me I cannot control."

The vision disappeared.

Aurelia stumbled.

Rowan caught her.

"What did you see?"

"Mother."

"What about her?"

"She was afraid of Choice."

The golden-eyed girl nodded.

"She was."

Aurelia looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because Choice could refuse."

Aurelia frowned.

"Refuse what?"

"Everything."

The red-eyed boy laughed.

"Memory can be forced."

He touched his chest.

"Consequence can be predicted."

The golden-eyed girl continued.

"Possibility can be calculated."

The silver-haired child looked directly at Aurelia.

"But Choice cannot be controlled."

Aurelia's breathing slowed.

"So that's why you were hidden."

"Yes."

"Where?"

The child pointed downward.

"Below."

Rowan looked around.

"Below what?"

"Everything."

A deep sound echoed beneath them.

The ground cracked.

Lena stepped back.

"Something's moving."

The forgotten people began whispering.

Hundreds of voices.

Then thousands.

Aurelia looked around.

Faces emerged from the darkness.

People who had been forgotten.

People who had been erased.

People who should never have been there.

They were standing.

Watching.

Waiting.

The First Hunger emerged from the shadows.

Its red eyes were fixed on the silver-haired child.

"No."

The child looked at it.

The First Hunger growled.

"You should have remained asleep."

The child smiled.

"I was never asleep."

The First Hunger lunged.

Aurelia barely saw it move.

Rowan pulled her aside.

The creature crashed into the ground.

The chamber shook.

The red-eyed boy stepped forward.

"Enough."

The First Hunger turned.

"You."

The boy's red eyes brightened.

"You cannot stop me."

"No."

The boy smiled.

"But I can show you what happens if you continue."

The First Hunger stopped.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then the creature backed away.

Aurelia stared.

"What did you show it?"

"Consequence."

She looked at the red-eyed boy.

"You made it see its future."

"Yes."

"What happens?"

The boy's smile disappeared.

"It dies."

Silence.

Aurelia looked at the silver-haired child.

"Can you do that?"

"No."

"Can you see the future?"

"No."

"Can you remember everything?"

"No."

"Then what makes you different?"

The child stepped closer.

"I can change what comes next."

Aurelia felt a chill.

"By choosing?"

"Yes."

The golden-eyed girl stepped toward her.

"And that's why Mother separated us."

Aurelia looked at her.

"She separated all four of you."

"Yes."

"Where did she put Choice?"

The golden-eyed girl pointed toward the darkness.

"Here."

Aurelia looked around.

"Here?"

"The world you thought was real."

Aurelia's heart stopped.

"What?"

"This place."

The girl touched the wall.

"It wasn't built to contain us."

"It was built to contain Choice."

Aurelia looked at Rowan.

He was staring at the walls.

"You knew?"

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"I knew this place was hiding something."

"But not this."

"No."

Aurelia turned back.

"Why bring me here?"

The silver-haired child answered.

"Because you are the only one who can make the final decision."

"What decision?"

The child raised its hand.

Three doors appeared.

One gold.

One red.

One silver.

Aurelia stared.

The golden-eyed girl moved toward the gold door.

"Memory."

The red-eyed boy stood beside the red door.

"Consequence."

The silver-haired child stood before the silver door.

"Choice."

Aurelia looked at Rowan.

"What happens if I open one?"

"You will become what that door represents."

She looked at the gold door.

"Memory."

The golden-eyed girl nodded.

"You will remember everything."

Aurelia's chest tightened.

Everything.

Every life.

Every forgotten face.

Every lie.

Every moment she had lost.

She looked toward the red door.

"And consequence?"

The red-eyed boy answered.

"You will see what every choice has caused."

Aurelia swallowed.

"And silver?"

The child looked at her.

"You will decide what happens next."

Aurelia stared at the three doors.

"Why can't I open all of them?"

"You cannot."

"Why?"

"Because every choice has a cost."

Rowan stepped forward.

"Then don't choose."

Aurelia looked at him.

"What?"

"Don't let this place force you."

The child looked at Rowan.

"He understands."

Aurelia frowned.

"Understands what?"

"That refusing to choose is also a choice."

Rowan's expression changed.

Aurelia looked back at the doors.

The golden door began to glow.

Images appeared across its surface.

Her childhood.

Mother.

Lena.

The first time she had seen Rowan.

Faces she had forgotten.

People she had loved.

People she had lost.

Aurelia stepped closer.

"I want to remember."

The golden-eyed girl smiled.

"You should."

But something stopped Aurelia.

She looked at Rowan.

"If I remember everything…"

"You may not be the same."

She looked at Lena.

"If I see every consequence…"

Lena shook her head.

"You might never forgive yourself."

Aurelia looked at the silver door.

"And if I choose?"

The silver-haired child answered.

"You may lose the right to know what would have happened."

Aurelia frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"You will choose without certainty."

She looked at the three doors again.

Memory offered knowledge.

Consequence offered certainty.

Choice offered neither.

Only responsibility.

Aurelia slowly stepped toward the silver door.

The red-eyed boy watched her.

"You're choosing uncertainty."

"Yes."

The golden-eyed girl looked almost sad.

"You could have remembered everything."

"I know."

"You could have seen what every action would cause."

"I know."

"Then why?"

Aurelia placed her hand on the silver door.

"Because if I already knew the outcome…"

She looked at them.

"…then it wouldn't really be a choice."

The chamber went silent.

The silver-haired child's expression softened.

"Yes."

The door opened.

White light exploded across the chamber.

Aurelia screamed.

Not from pain.

From the thousands of voices suddenly entering her mind.

Every forgotten person.

Every erased memory.

Every possibility.

Every consequence.

Every choice.

For one terrible moment, she understood everything.

She saw Rowan dying.

She saw Rowan surviving.

She saw Lena becoming Mother.

She saw Lena dying.

She saw the golden-eyed girl becoming human.

She saw her disappearing.

She saw the red-eyed boy consuming the world.

She saw him saving it.

She saw Aurelia herself becoming Mother.

Then she saw another possibility.

A world where none of them existed.

Aurelia cried out.

"No!"

The vision stopped.

She collapsed to her knees.

Rowan rushed toward her.

"Aurelia!"

She looked up.

Her eyes were no longer the same.

Not gold.

Not red.

Not silver.

They were her own.

Human.

Rowan knelt beside her.

"What did you see?"

Aurelia struggled to breathe.

"Everything."

"Then tell me."

She shook her head.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because if I tell you…"

She looked at the silver-haired child.

"…it becomes another possibility."

The child nodded.

Aurelia slowly stood.

The chamber was changing.

The walls were disappearing.

The forgotten people were becoming visible.

Not shadows anymore.

People.

Real people.

The First Hunger screamed.

The Design collapsed.

The old structures shattered.

The golden-eyed girl stared at Aurelia.

"What did you do?"

Aurelia looked at her.

"I chose."

The red-eyed boy smiled.

"Then the world belongs to you."

Aurelia shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Rowan.

"It belongs to everyone."

A deep silence followed.

Then the silver-haired child stepped backward.

Its body began to fade.

Aurelia reached toward it.

"Wait."

The child smiled.

"I don't belong here anymore."

"Where will you go?"

"Wherever someone makes a choice."

Aurelia's eyes filled with tears.

"Will I see you again?"

The child looked at her.

"You already have."

Aurelia froze.

"What?"

The child disappeared.

The chamber became completely silent.

Then Rowan whispered,

"Aurelia."

She turned.

"What?"

He looked past her.

At the place where the child had stood.

There was something on the floor.

A small silver pendant.

Aurelia picked it up.

The moment her fingers touched it, a voice whispered inside her mind.

Not Mother's.

Not the child's.

Her own.

There is one choice left.

Aurelia's blood ran cold.

She looked at Rowan.

"Did you hear that?"

He shook his head.

"No."

Lena approached.

"What happened?"

Aurelia stared at the pendant.

"I think…"

She stopped.

The ground beneath them began to tremble again.

Not collapsing.

Opening.

A massive staircase appeared beneath the chamber.

It descended farther than anything they had seen before.

Rowan looked down.

"That's impossible."

Aurelia stared into the darkness.

A voice rose from below.

Old.

Familiar.

And terrifying.

You chose Choice.

Aurelia tightened her grip on the pendant.

The voice continued.

Now choose who lives.

Rowan's face went pale.

Lena stepped backward.

And from the darkness below them…

Mother opened her eyes.
