Chapter 228 - Chapter 228: The Fall of the North II

The final battle for Blackfang Keep began at dawn under a sky the color of cold steel. Pale light spread slowly across the valley floor, revealing the rocky outcrop that held the stronghold and the long lines of Valorian forces that had taken position during the night. Warlord Grimnar had gathered what remained of the Ironfang Clan inside the rocky stronghold and along the approaches that led to its gates.

His warriors were fewer than they had been at the height of the feud, their armor dented and scarred from months of attrition, their faces gaunt from short rations and endless fighting. Yet they still held the high ground and the iron resolve that had defined their clan for generations. The iron wolf banner still flew above the main keep, snapping in the cold wind as a final statement of defiance. Grimnar himself stood on the outer wall, war hammer resting against the stone, his scarred face set in hard lines as the Valorian force deployed across the valley floor with the quiet precision of soldiers who knew exactly what they had come to do.

Violet Valerius did not waste time with challenges or parley. She sat her mount at the center of the command group, her lithe fierce form clad in dark leather and silver armor, her eyes already measuring distances and angles. She raised one hand and spoke the first order of the day in a voice that carried clearly to the captains who waited for her word. "Heavy cavalry to the flanks. Cut the escape routes along the eastern ridge and the western scrub. Infantry forward in ranks. Hold the line and close every gap. Archers ready. Powder teams to the marked positions. We end this cleanly and we end it today." The captains repeated the orders down the lines.

The heavy cavalry moved out in a sweeping arc that sealed the main paths leading away from the keep. The elite infantry advanced in disciplined ranks, shields locked, boots striking the cold ground in unison. Black powder charges, placed during the final hours of darkness by teams who had worked under cover of the rocky terrain, opened gaps in the outer defenses with deep cracking reports that sent stone and timber flying. Archers provided covering fire that forced the Ironfang defenders to keep their heads low behind the battlements.

The Valorian soldiers moved with the precision of men and women who had drilled for this moment under Violet's command through long seasons of preparation. They did not charge in wild fury. They advanced step by step, shield to shield, blade to blade, closing every gap the Ironfangs tried to open. An infantry sergeant called the cadence as his rank pushed forward.

"Hold the wall. Step. Drive. Do not break for single men. Leave the gaps to the second rank." A young soldier near the front answered with the tight discipline of the Centerlands. "Understood, Sergeant. We hold for the Duchess." The line absorbed the first volleys of Ironfang arrows and kept moving. When a section of outer wall crumbled under a carefully timed charge, the Valorian infantry poured through the opening in controlled waves rather than a disordered rush.

Grimnar led a counter charge from the main gate the moment the outer defenses began to fail. His massive form filled the gateway like a living banner of resistance, the war hammer rising and falling in wide arcs that crushed the first ranks that met him. "Ironfangs! Hold the gate! Show these southern soldiers what northern steel still means!" His voice roared across the approach as his remaining warriors poured after him, their dented armor and gaunt faces set in the same defiance that had carried them through the long war of attrition. For a brief moment the Ironfang line held. The hammer rose and fell. An Ironfang captain shouted encouragement to the men around him. "With the Warlord! Drive them back down the slope!" The press of bodies around the gate became a brutal tangle of steel and muscle.

Then the Centerlands cavalry struck from the flank. The heavy horse came in at the angle Violet had ordered, lances lowering at the last moment, the weight of the charge slamming into the side of the Ironfang counter attack. Men went down. The pressure that had briefly held the gate became too great. Violet herself rode into the press at the critical moment, her sword flashing as she cut down a captain who had raised an Ironfang standard too close to her path.

The blade moved with the lethal speed that marked her training and the deeper gifts that lived in her blood. The succubus presence that stirred within her made her arrival a weight upon the enemy, sowing hesitation and fear even among hardened warriors who had faced death many times before. An Ironfang fighter who had been about to swing at a Valorian soldier faltered for a heartbeat too long and fell. Another stepped back rather than close with the dark armored figure who rode through their ranks with such cold precision.

Violet's voice cut through the noise of the fighting as she directed the next phase. "Second infantry rank through the breach. Secure the wall walk. Archers shift to the inner courtyard once the gate is clear. No pursuit of runners until the keep itself is ours." A cavalry captain wheeled his mount close enough to report. "Eastern escape route sealed, Duchess. Western scrub is under our control. They have nowhere left to run." Violet answered without looking away from the gate. "Hold those positions. I want every path watched. Grimnar will not slip away into the rocks."

The battle was brutal and short. By midday the outer walls had fallen. Valorian infantry stood on the battlements that had once belonged to the Ironfangs, the black and violet banners already rising in place of the iron wolf. By afternoon the keep itself was breached through the main gate and a secondary opening forced in the eastern wall. Fighting continued through the narrow corridors and the inner courtyard, the sound of steel-on-steel echoing off the stone.

Grimnar fought until the end in the heart of the stronghold, his war hammer rising and falling long after most of his captains had fallen or been forced to yield. His scarred face remained set in defiance even as the circle of Valorian soldiers closed around him. The hammer finally dropped from hands that would no longer obey, the weight of exhaustion and wounds proving greater than even his iron will. He went to his knees on the blood stained stones of his own hall, still trying to rise as the last of his strength left him.

The last Ironfang resistance collapsed under the weight of superior numbers and discipline. Captains who still held weapons looked to one another and then to the raven banners that now flew above every wall. One by one they lowered their blades. The stronghold that had once seemed unassailable now flew the raven banner of the Valerius empire from its highest tower. The Ironfang Clan was decimated. Those who surrendered were disarmed with careful efficiency and placed under guard in the outer courtyard. Those who refused the call to yield fell where they stood, their final resistance ending against the disciplined ranks that Violet had brought from the Centerlands. The long war of attrition had reached its conclusion on the blood stained stones of Blackfang Keep.

The inner courtyard of Blackfang Keep still held the heat of battle even as the afternoon light began to soften. Smoke drifted in thin gray threads from the places where powder charges had opened the walls. The stones underfoot were dark with blood and churned mud. Valorian soldiers moved with disciplined purpose among the surrendered Ironfangs, collecting weapons and binding the hands of those who had chosen to live. The iron wolf banners that had flown above the keep for generations lay in heaps on the ground, their cloth torn and trampled. In their place the black and violet standards of the Valerius empire rose from every tower and gate, the raven sigil clear against the cold sky.

Duchess Violet Valerius dismounted in the center of the courtyard. Her dark leather and silver armor bore the marks of the fighting, a thin line of blood across one pauldron and the dust of the valley road still clinging to her boots. She handed the reins of her mount to a waiting squire and walked to the raised steps that led to the main hall, the same steps where Warlord Grimnar had once stood to address his clan. The surviving Ironfang warriors, disarmed and guarded, watched her with a mixture of exhaustion and sullen recognition. The Valorian ranks formed up in the open space of the courtyard, infantry and cavalry alike turning to face their commander. Captains stood at the front of their units, waiting for the words that would mark the end of the long northern campaign.

Violet climbed the steps and turned to look out over the gathered force and the defeated. Her lithe fierce form stood straight, the succubus intensity in her blood banked for the moment yet still present in the sharp clarity of her gaze. When she spoke, her voice carried across the courtyard with the same precision she had used to direct the battle.

"Soldiers of the Centerlands. Captains. Brothers and sisters who marched with me from the heartland to these stones. Today the Ironfang Clan has fallen. Blackfang Keep is ours. The raven banner flies where the iron wolf once claimed dominion. The long war of attrition that bled the Northern Wolf Realms for season after season ends on this ground and under this sky."

A low roll of approval moved through the Valorian ranks. Violet raised one hand and the sound quieted at once.

"You did not come here for wild glory or for the simple pleasure of conquest. You came because King Damien Valerius, my father and your sovereign, required the north stabilized. The Stormhowl Pack has already accepted the terms of vassalage and the protection of the empire. The Ironfangs refused. They chose continued resistance. They chose to keep the passes closed and the valleys in conflict. That choice ends today. You advanced in order. You held formation under fire. You closed every gap they tried to open. You fought with the discipline that the Centerlands has spent years forging. That discipline is why this keep fell before the sun could cross the full arc of the sky."

She paused and looked toward the group of surrendered Ironfang warriors. Her voice remained steady and clear.

"To those of the Ironfang Clan who laid down their weapons, listen well. The empire does not require your annihilation. It requires your submission and your service. You will be disarmed. You will be counted. Those who accept the authority of the Raven Throne will live and will find a place within the new order of the north. Those who refuse the terms that will be offered in the coming days will meet the same end as the men who chose to die on these stones. The choice is no longer between freedom and vassalage. That choice was made when you continued the fight after the Stormhowl signed the treaty. The choice now is between life under the empire and death in defiance of it."

An Ironfang captain, his face bloodied and his armor dented, lifted his head and spoke with the last of his defiance. "We followed Grimnar because he never knelt. What does your empire offer men who have only known the hammer and the open fight?"

Violet met his eyes without flinching. "It offers survival. It offers food that does not run short after every raid. It offers the chance for your children to grow without the constant shadow of the next battle. Grimnar is broken. His hammer no longer rises. The stronghold you held is no longer yours. The empire offers the only path that remains open. Take it or join the dead. There is no third road."

The captain lowered his gaze. No other Ironfang voice rose in challenge.

Violet turned back to her own soldiers. The fierce edge in her expression softened only slightly, replaced by the hard pride of a commander who had delivered what her father required.

"Centerlands. You have done the work that was asked of you. The passes will be secured. The remaining Ironfang holdings will be brought under control. The Stormhowl will stand as the recognized authority of the Northern Wolf Realms under the protection of King Damien Valerius. You will remain here long enough to make that reality solid. Then we will see to the roads, the outposts, and the tribute that will flow south. The empire grows stronger today because you held the line and advanced when the order was given."

She drew her sword and raised it so that the steel caught the afternoon light.

"For the Raven Throne. For the Centerlands. For the will of the king."

The Valorian ranks answered as one, the sound rolling off the stone walls of the keep and out into the valley. "For the Raven Throne. For the Centerlands. For the will of the king."

Violet lowered the blade and sheathed it. The formal words of victory had been spoken. The work of securing the north would continue through the rest of the day and into the weeks that followed, but the decisive moment had passed. Blackfang Keep belonged to the empire. The Ironfang resistance was finished. The long march from the Centerlands had reached its purpose on the blood stained stones of the stronghold that had once seemed unassailable.
