Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 : Different Ghosts Growing Together

Morning

Sunlight filled the quiet penthouse. Maria sat at the kitchen island, her hands around a cold coffee mug. Last night felt like a bad dream, but her body remembered it was real. Victor was gone. The storm was over. Only the guilt remained.

David had left for work without saying goodbye. Their fight last night hung in the air like smoke.

MARIA

(whispering to herself)

"How did we get here?"

Regret

Maria moved through her day like a ghost. She cleaned the guest room where the Suarez family had stayed. She washed the sheets, trying to wash away the memory.

She thought about the kiss. She thought about how lonely she had felt for so long. David was always working. He provided everything except what she needed most—his attention.

But that wasn't an excuse. She had made a choice last night. A bad choice.

The guilt was heavy in her chest. She blamed herself completely.

College Life

At Columbia University, Martinez walked with her friend Chloe between classes.

CHLOE

"Thanks again for having us last night! Your parents are so... interesting."

MARTINEZ

"Yeah. Interesting."

Something felt off to Martinez. Chloe was her best friend, but sometimes she seemed like she was acting. Like she was playing the part of a friend.

What Martinez didn't see: When she went to the bathroom, Chloe took out her phone.

CHLOE'S TEXT:

To a boy named Jason

"Still hanging with the genius girl. It's good for my reputation. She's actually kind of boring. Party at 8? - C"

Chloe put her phone away and smiled when Martinez returned.

CHLOE

"Physics test next week. Want to study together?"

MARTINEZ

"Sure."

Martinez trusted Chloe completely. She didn't know her friend talked about her behind her back.

Leo's World

Back at the penthouse, Leo was in his room. At 11 years old, he was a god-gifted genius. While other kids played games, Leo wrote his own. While they learned math, Leo created new equations.

His room was full of computers, 3D printers, and robot parts. David's money bought him whatever tech he wanted.

Maria knocked on his door.

MARIA

"Leo? It's lunchtime."

LEO

(without looking up from his screens)

"I ordered food. The drone will deliver it in 4.2 minutes. More efficient than you cooking."

Maria watched her son. He was so smart, but sometimes he seemed more machine than boy. He lived in his own world—a world of code and logic where feelings didn't exist.

LEO

"Dad's stress levels are 80% higher than last month. His sleep quality has dropped by 45%. You should fix that."

MARIA

"It's not that simple, Leo."

LEO

"Everything is simple with the right data. You're not collecting enough data."

He went back to his screens. Maria closed the door softly. Her family was coming apart, and her genius son saw it all as a data problem to solve.

Evening

Night came. David didn't come home. Maria sat alone in the dark living room, looking at the city lights.

She thought about her choices. She thought about David's absence. She thought about how they had slowly become strangers in the same house.

In her dorm, Martinez looked out her window. She thought about her parents. About the tension in their home. About her search for Spider-Man that never seemed to end.

And Leo, in his room, finished his latest project. He looked at the family calendar on his screen. Empty spaces where family time should be. He calculated the probability of his parents staying together. The number wasn't good.

But that wasn't his problem to solve. He had better things to do.

The ghost of Spider-Man was still out there somewhere. But in this apartment, in this family, different ghosts were growing stronger.

Ghosts of silence.

Ghosts of things not said.

Ghosts of people living together but feeling alone.
