Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Charlotte’s Turn

Charlotte's POV

The classroom had slowly settled back into its usual rhythm — new projects, shuffled partners, and soft whispers passing through the halls. But for me, something was different.

I wasn't waiting anymore.

When the English teacher announced a group presentation, my hand went up before I could second-guess myself.

"Can I lead the presentation for our group?" I asked.

My voice didn't shake.

For a second, the class went quiet. Not the awkward kind. Not judgmental. Just… attentive. The teacher looked at me and smiled.

"Of course, Charlotte."

From the bench beside me, Swetha nudged Indhu and whispered, "Look at her go."

I pretended not to hear, but my heart felt lighter.

Outside class, I started staying back more often — helping classmates, explaining points, making sure no one was left out. Not to be noticed. Not to prove anything. Just because I finally believed I had something to give.

I had become the quiet glue in a group that once felt too loud for me.

One afternoon, while we worked on slides, Rohan glanced up and asked,

"Hey, Charlotte… were you always this confident?"

I laughed softly.

"No. I just got tired of thinking I wasn't enough."

The change wasn't dramatic.

It didn't happen overnight.

It was slow — like sunlight returning after a long storm.

My mind whispered to me ..

I used to think I had to be louder, funnier, smarter to belong. But now I know — I didn't need to change who I was. I wasn't invisible. I was just not ready. And now… I am.

On presentation day, I stood on stage.

My voice stayed steady.

My points were clear.

When I paused, the class listened.

When I joked, they laughed.

I wasn't trying to impress anyone.

Afterward, the teacher said simply,

"That was excellent. Confident and natural."

As I walked back, Swetha whispered, "You totally owned that stage."

Indhu added quietly, "I'm proud of you."

I smiled.

For the first time, it wasn't about being the best.

It was about being seen — and finally seeing myself.

I was also selected for tracks.

And when the day finally came, everything blurred into motion.

The final whistle blew.

I crossed the finish line — lungs burning, legs aching — but my heart felt light. The crowd erupted, but my ears caught only one sound.

My name.

"CHARLOTTE!"

I turned.

Indhu. Swetha. Aditya. Rohan.

Cheering for me.

Others were still running. Still chasing.

And that's when it hit me.

I had won.

First place.

The PE teacher announced the results. Applause filled the ground. But all I saw was my group rushing toward me.

Swetha reached me first, almost knocking me over with a hug.

"I knew you'd do it!"

Indhu hugged me next — calm, proud, real.

"You didn't just win, Charlotte. You soared."

Aditya grinned, trying not to look too impressed.

"So… when are you joining the national team?"

Rohan high-fived me.

"You were lightning. Seriously."

For the first time, I wasn't chasing anything.

I had already arrived.

Later, we sat under the neem tree near the field. My medal rested in one hand, a juice box in the other. We talked about everything — sports, classes, random jokes — but my heart stayed stuck on one thought.

Not the medal.

The belonging.

I looked at them and finally said what had been sitting inside me for so long.

"Guys… let's be honest. On the first day of 10th grade, I never thought I'd fit in. But when Indhu and Swetha gave me a place — not just on their bench, but in their world — everything changed."

I smiled, my voice soft but sure.

"And now… because of you all, I did this. We should never let anyone bother us. Not even Virus."

[virus - leanor's nick name 😅]

The group burst into laughter.

Indhu and Swetha pulled me into a tight hug.

And in that moment, I knew:

I wasn't a background character anymore.

I was seen.

I was heard.

And I belonged.
