Chapter 224 - Chapter 222: Star-Lord Awakens

Cassius stared at the grainy footage. The 80s home videos hit different now. In his past life he knew the songs and the styles, but they were just symbols. Watching these fuzzy clips full of big hair, wide smiles, and cheap birthday cakes, something clicked. A real emotional thread.

Peter Quill wasn't just clinging to old hits. He was holding onto the ordinary childhood and sense of belonging those songs represented. Cassius felt the core of the character for the first time.

His system panel exploded.

Role Influence +38. Role Influence upgraded.

Understanding the role had reached its emotional core. Immersion came faster and more natural. Belief in the performance skyrocketed. Audiences would see him and believe he was the character.

Additional effect: In deep immersion, slightly boosts co-stars' commitment too.

At the same time, the Reputation-Building bar finally hit 99 percent. One percent left.

Cassius was ready for the upgrade. The next few days he threw himself harder into training and improvisation scenes, chasing that final push.

His routine broke when Rob called.

"Cass, find somewhere private. This is important."

Cassius signaled the weapons coach for a break, grabbed a towel and water, and walked to a quiet storage alcove.

"Go ahead."

Rob took a deep breath. "They caught the guy who sabotaged your diving gear."

Cassius's eyes narrowed. The near-drowning during training had almost killed him. He'd figured the guy vanished after the Warner casting mess and the Marvel deal. He and Rob had even hired a private detective to work with the cops.

"Where is he? Who is he?"

"Almost made it across the border into Mexico. They grabbed him in a border town. Name's Karl. Forty-two. Record for theft and vandalism. Used to work temp gigs on small sets."

Rob paused. "They didn't catch him for your case at first. He ran into other trouble. When they booked him, his prints matched the ones from the training facility. That's when local cops looped in our detective."

"Did they question him? Who paid him? Was it random or targeted?"

Rob's voice dropped. "This is the part that matters. They hit him hard in interrogation. He lawyered up at first, then they offered a deal and he talked."

"Who?"

"Matthew McConaughey."

The line went dead on both ends. In the distance, Dave Bautista's practice slams echoed through the warehouse.

Cassius ran the name through his head. Matthew McConaughey. Fresh Oscar winner. The new lead on Interstellar. The same guy who'd gone on TV weeks earlier telling Cassius to be grateful and know his place.

Everything made sense now. After Cassius's accident, McConaughey was the only one who benefited. The perfect white Oscar winner to steady the project and protect Warner's image.

"Karl said it was all about the money. McConaughey used a middleman, paid him a fat stack to stage a diving 'accident' during training. Didn't have to kill you, just injure you bad enough to drop you from the role and the reshoots."

Rob kept going, voice tight. "Timing lines up with when Warner was still fighting internally over whether to replace you. Karl said McConaughey acted like he already had the part locked in if you were out."

"Evidence?"

"Cash is hard to trace. Middleman's still a ghost. But Karl mentioned McConaughey showed him a photo of you from Fast training with a date stamp to confirm the target. We're tracking where that photo came from. Money trail's being followed, but it'll take time."

Rob sounded grim. "The bad part is this won't stay quiet. Karl's in custody on a case tied to McConaughey and Warner's flagship project. Warner already knows."

Cassius understood instantly. Warner's executives were probably panicking. If McConaughey got charged with hiring someone to sabotage a rival on their big prestige film, Interstellar would implode. A criminal scandal on the lead actor would be a hundred times worse than swapping out one guy.

"Warner will bury this at any cost."

"Exactly. And they'll move fast. Karl died this morning."

Cassius froze. "What?"

"Heart attack during transport to another interview. Forty-two years old, no major medical history. Happened right after Warner's legal team showed up and asked for a private meeting."

The man who could directly implicate McConaughey was dead. Convenient. Too convenient.

"Warner—"

"They'll have clean medical reports and a dozen explanations. But the timing is obvious. Karl dies and the direct link to McConaughey breaks."

"Photo and money trail can be explained away or flipped. McConaughey's already got the best lawyers in town. He'll walk clean."

Cassius pictured the charming, philosophical McConaughey from the talk show. The same man who'd suggested Cassius should be grateful and stay in his lane.

All for one role? Or was it deeper? Fear of an outsider breaking through. Arrogance that some people were allowed to play by different rules.

Warner probably knew or looked the other way. They needed a safe, non-controversial white Oscar winner to save their project and stock price. Cleanliness wasn't the priority.

Rob was right. They couldn't touch them right now. Karl's death cut the strongest evidence. Whatever was left would get buried under Warner's legal and PR machine.

If Cassius went public now, they'd paint him as a sore loser slinging conspiracy theories. It could hurt Guardians of the Galaxy before it even started.

"Fucking Hollywood."

Cassius let the anger settle into something harder. Rage wouldn't fix this. He needed to become too valuable to screw with.

Interstellar might flop or it might succeed. Either way, Cassius had Fast 6 and Guardians of the Galaxy. Those were his weapons. He would make himself irreplaceable. The kind of star where hurting him cost them too much.

He texted Rob: "I get it. Focus on the work. Use the projects to build real leverage. Stay safe on your end."

Rob replied fast: "Understood. You watch your back too."

Cassius stood up, brushed off his pants, and walked back to training.

Dave was sweating through another set of throws. He spotted Cassius and grinned. "Hey, Cas! Coach says my angle's still off. Come check it."

"On it."

Cassius stepped in, corrected Dave's form, and they kept working. Zoe glanced over from the weapons station, gave him a small nod. Her favorability had climbed to 52.

Training felt sharper. Every move carried more weight.

The Reputation-Building bar still sat at 99 percent. Cassius could feel the last thin layer about to break.

That night he opened his Peter Quill journal and wrote: "Today I learned the universe has pirates who shoot you in the back and dump the body in a black hole. At least Yondu was honest about it. Mom always said if you can't outrun the dog, don't stop to bite back. Run until you're out of reach, or find a bigger gun. I think I know what to do now."

The long months of closed training finally ended. The Marine coach gave Cassius a rare nod on the last day. "Good enough. Don't embarrass me by dying on set."

The real test was just beginning.

The crew bus carried the main cast and key team to Shepperton Studios. The mood was electric. Even Zoe kept glancing out the window. Dave couldn't sit still.

The bus stopped in front of a massive soundstage. Gunn was waiting outside, rubbing his hands like an excited kid.

"Welcome to the playground. Don't blink."

The huge doors slid open.

Inside was the Collector's museum. It took up the entire space, floor to ceiling, packed with thousands of strange, glowing artifacts. Glass cases, weird specimens, broken ships, alien coins, even a few familiar-looking ancient cash pieces tucked into one display.

Dave's jaw dropped. "Holy shit."

Zoe walked the aisles, studying the weapons with professional interest. Cassius felt Peter Quill's excitement and thievery instincts kick in without effort.

Role Immersion +30. A huge gold orb dropped and he absorbed it.

The Collector's set was perfect. It made everything real.

Gunn grinned at their reactions. "Sixty percent of this is practical. We built it for six months. Touch whatever you want."

Cassius ran his fingers over a display case and smiled. This was going to be good.
