Chapter 236 - Chapter 234: Absence Makes the Heart Grow Hornier

Morning scenes went smooth as butter.

Cassius made a point of chatting up the crew. He helped the gaffer steady a ladder, grabbed a water for props, and even talked shop with the VFX guys about green-screen timing.

The vibe shifted fast. By lunch, the set felt warmer. People smiled when they saw him instead of keeping that polite distance stars usually get.

He skipped the fancy actors' tent and carried his tray straight to the crew tables.

"Anyone sitting here?"

"Cassius! Sit, sit!"

"Call me Cassius. Just Cassius."

He dropped into the seat next to a young VFX intern named Mike. "You eating like a bird?"

Mike blushed. "Trying to cut weight—"

"Bullshit. You're hauling gear all afternoon." Cassius slid his chicken leg onto Mike's plate. "Eat up."

Mike stared like he'd won the lottery. "Th-thanks!"

"Anytime."

Cassius shoveled in a bite. "So what's the VFX team grinding on right now? How's Groot coming?"

Mike lit up. "Final renders. Gunn's a tyrant about the eyes—he says they need soul. We've tweaked the texture eight hundred times—"

They talked for fifteen minutes straight.

Before afternoon call, Cassius checked the panel.

Team Collaboration jumped from A to A+.

Done.

Now for audience expectation. That one was trickier—no movie out yet, so hype was everything.

He opened Twitter and fired off the first post: "Guardians final weeks. Shot Star-Lord trying to teach Groot to dance today. That tree moves better than I do. [laugh-cry]"

He attached a quick behind-the-scenes snap.

Ten minutes later it had ten thousand likes.

Comments exploded: "Groot dancing? I need to see this!"

"Cass, drop more set stuff!"

"So Star-Lord's the dance teacher?"

"When's it dropping?"

Cassius replied to a few: "Date's locked but close. Gunn choreographed it himself—pure chaos."

Second post: a fifteen-second clip of Dave doing push-ups, muscles gleaming, with Cassius's voiceover. "Daily training for Drax. Pretty sure he could one-punch Thanos."

Dave looked up mid-rep and grinned at the camera. "Cass, keep talking and I'll punch you first."

The clip hit fifty thousand retweets in twenty minutes.

"Dave's adorable!"

"These two are comedy gold!"

"Thanos: ??? What did I do?"

"Guardians is gonna be the happiest crew in the MCU!"

Third post was more personal: "People keep asking who Star-Lord really is. He's an Earth kid lost in the galaxy—cocky jokes to hide the loneliness, smart-ass lines to cover how much he cares. He steals, he fights, he runs his mouth, but Mom's old song still lives in his head."

That one landed deep. "Cassius gets the character so well!"

"Already crying for Quill!"

"What song? Tell us!"

Cassius answered the last one: "Jackson 5's 'I'll Be There.' It's huge in the movie."

Three posts in, the Guardians hashtag was trending.

Afternoon was the big group fight scene—first time the whole crew teamed up on-screen.

Gunn barked through the megaphone: "You're a team now! Trust each other even if you just met. Eyes on each other, moves tight!"

Three takes and it still felt off. Dave kept blocking Zoe, Bradley's timing was a half-second late, Cassius and the raccoon puppet weren't clicking.

Gunn called cut. "Ten-minute break. Find the chemistry!"

Cassius grabbed water. Dave wandered over, wiping sweat. "This is brutal—fighting thin air and pretending we're synced."

"Not that hard," Cassius said. "Break it down. Rocket opens fire, Gamora flanks left, Drax goes straight in, Star-Lord and Groot cover—"

He sketched quick arrows in the dirt with a stick.

Zoe joined them. "I think Gamora should cut in earlier—give Drax room."

"Exactly!" Dave nodded. "Then I smash down, Cass you knife from the side—"

Bradley wandered over with his headphones. "Rocket should chuck a grenade right there—total chaos."

"Perfect." Cassius added the grenade to their dirt map.

Five minutes later they had a full battle plan.

Gunn came back, eyebrows up. "You kids wrote your own tactics?"

"We want to try it," Cassius said.

"Show me."

They nailed it on the next take. Movements flowed, eyes locked, the five of them moved like they'd been fighting together for years.

"Cut!" Gunn slapped his thigh. "That's the one!"

Wrap party ran late. Gunn brought two cases of beer, Dave cracked open his good whiskey, Zoe sliced Spanish ham.

Cassius worked the room, clinking glasses with everyone.

Gunn, already half-drunk, slung an arm around Cassius's shoulders. "Cass, you're one of the most pro actors I've ever worked with. Day one I knew Star-Lord had found his guy."

"Thanks, boss. Your script made it easy."

"Script's only as good as the actor selling it," Gunn insisted. "Some people turn gold into garbage. You turn garbage into gold—and my script was already gold!"

Everyone laughed.

Dave raised his glass. "Next time there's a fight scene, call me. I promise not to actually break your ribs."

"I'll hold you to that." Cassius clinked with him.

Zoe came over with fruit juice instead of booze. "Good working with you. Hope we do it again."

"Count on it."

Her favorability sat at 79—solid colleague territory, nothing deeper. The rest of the cast hovered in the high eighties to low nineties. Good enough.

Cassius flew to Paris the next morning.

Ten-hour flight. Landed at Charles de Gaulle at nine a.m. local.

Jennifer had already texted: "Landed? I'm at the hotel."

He typed back: "Just touched down. See you in an hour."

The hotel was a discreet five-star on the Left Bank. Jennifer waited in the lobby wearing a plain white tee, jeans, and a baseball cap pushed back. Sunglasses on her head. Still looked like a movie star.

"Long time no see."

She stood and hugged him hard.

"Only a month."

Cassius pulled back. "You lost weight."

"Starving for the Dior shoot. I've been eating lettuce like a damn rabbit."

They rode the elevator up. Her suite was right next to his—she'd made sure.

The second the door closed behind them, Jennifer wrapped her arms around him from behind.

"Missed you."

Cassius turned, looked down at her, and kissed her like he'd been waiting weeks.

She kissed back harder.

Absence really did make everything hotter.

Rain tapped against the windows. Paris gray and soft outside.

Afterward she lay curled against his chest, finger tracing lazy circles over his skin.

"Your prediction came true."

"The Dior deal?"

"Not just the deal." Jennifer lifted her head. "You know that video of me eating shit on the red carpet? It's at three hundred million views now. Dior's losing their minds—they've never had this much buzz. Brands are lining up through next year."

"Congrats."

Cassius kissed her forehead.

"Congrats to you too." She smiled. "The tagline stuck—'The most beautiful flowers deserve the most careful hands.' Twitter's full of edits of you catching me. One of them hit a million retweets."

Cassius raised an eyebrow. "I haven't even seen it."

She handed him her phone. The top edit was their red-carpet moment slowed down with the caption "When your girl trips in heels." Another one mashed his Oscar photo with the Dior silhouette and the words "Boyfriend of the Year."

"This is ridiculous."

"Fans love the ship." Jennifer took the phone back. "Good for us. Dior's obsessed with our chemistry. They want the campaign to feel like a real story."

"So today's shoot—"

"Is basically us being us." Jennifer sat up. "Director's French—Pierre. Used to do art films. Dior paid him a fortune to turn this into a little movie about protection and partnership. Super abstract."

"Script?"

"Three pages. Mostly mood and setting. Almost no dialogue."

She pulled the pages from her bag and handed them over.

Cassius skimmed. A man and woman meet on a Paris street, walk through seasons together, always supporting each other, end up back where they started, share a look.

"That's it?"

"That's it." Jennifer shrugged. "Pierre says the rest is us."

"Alright then."

They started at seven the next morning. The location was a private estate outside Paris—old Baroque mansion, perfect gardens. Dior's team had turned it into a full production base.

Makeup and wardrobe took forever. Cassius got three looks: a gray check suit, a deep navy overcoat, and a casual khaki trench. All fit like they were made for him.

When he stepped out, Jennifer was already waiting in a white Dior dress with pearl embroidery, hair loose and soft.

"Damn."

Cassius whistled.

"You clean up nice too."

They were still flirting when Pierre appeared—long hair, round sunglasses, easy smile.

"Bonjour. I'm Pierre, your director today. Pleasure to work with both of you."

Cassius shook his hand. "Cassius."

"I know—the Oscar guy. I loved your work in The Hunger Games."

"Thanks."

"Jennifer, your plate-smashing scene in Silver Linings? Chef's kiss."

Jennifer laughed. "Today I'm not smashing plates. Might trip though."

"Tripping is good," Pierre said. "Real is beautiful."

First scene was simple: the two of them walking the garden path, occasional glances, soft smiles. No lines.

Pierre was a perfectionist. "Cassius, slower. You're not rushing—you're savoring every second with her."

"Jennifer, when you smile, look at his eyes, not the lens."

They shot it fourteen times before he was happy.

During a break Cassius sipped water. "What's he actually chasing?"

Jennifer wiped sweat from her neck. "I think he's trying to catch whatever's real between us. That moment you fixed my hair earlier? He loved it."

"Wind blew it in your face."

"Still looked natural. That's what he wants."

Second scene was on the terrace. Two lines only.

Jennifer: "Look—the sky's clearing."

Cassius: "Yeah. Rain stopped."

They did it twenty times. Different tones, different rhythms. Pierre kept saying, "I'll know the right one when I see it."

On take twenty Cassius just said it—quiet, everyday, like talking to someone he'd known forever.

"Cut!" Pierre jumped up. "That's the one!"

Lunch was French-simple: ham sandwiches, salad, macarons for dessert.

They were eating under an umbrella when a tall man in a wild floral shirt and sharp middle part walked over.

John Galliano.

"Forgive the interruption. I'm John—creative director at Dior."

They both stood.

Galliano studied Cassius like he was a sculpture. "You wear Dior beautifully. Asian bone structure in a suit has this quiet power—shoulders narrow but strong. Very elegant."

"Thanks."

"Jennifer, that dress is perfect on you. White suits your energy—pure but not innocent. I've watched your red-carpet fall a dozen times. It's alive. That's what fashion needs."

Jennifer smiled. "Thanks. Hopefully I don't have to fall again today."

"Oh, you should fall," Galliano said seriously. "The industry is so fake. Everyone poses. You two give it something real—protection, connection. That's the beauty."

He glanced at Cassius again, then stood. "I'll be watching this afternoon. Keep going. I'm excited to see the final cut."

After he left, Jennifer leaned in. "He's… intense."

"Genius usually is."

Cassius took another bite of his sandwich.

The afternoon shoot rolled on. By the time they wrapped, the rain had started again—soft Paris drizzle.

Cassius and Jennifer walked back to the hotel hand in hand, both a little tired, both smiling.

Long separation really did make everything better when you finally got back together.
