Chapter 19 - The Threads Entangle

The day began like any other—sunlight spilling over marble floors—but no one inside the palace felt calm.

Zhen Luo stood in the private garden, hands clasped behind his back. The Crown Prince looked every inch obedient, every inch calm… but his mind raced.

"The Queen is pushing," Feng Huai said quietly, leaning against a tree. "And Li Shuran is… sharpening her claws."

Zhen Luo didn't answer. His gaze was fixed on the eastern corridor, where shadows shifted unnaturally.

Far above, Han Jian crouched on the roof of the east wing, scanning the garden below. He tilted his head at the faint glimmer of a thread—palace magic woven through the air, linking the Crown Prince to threats, whispers, rumors.

He smiled faintly.

"Let's see how tangled they can get," he murmured.

In the outer hall, Bai Zehan and Luo Xian moved silently, keeping to shadows.

"Do you really think the assassins were just… sloppy?" Bai Zehan whispered, crouching behind a pillar.

Luo Xian shook his head. "No. Someone wanted it obvious. Someone above them."

Bai Zehan's lips pressed together. "That means the Queen is panicking."

"Or testing him," Luo Xian said softly. "And us."

They moved toward the storage room, where reports of mercenary hires and hidden alliances were kept. A single parchment could expose the truth.

Back in the garden, Li Shuran approached Zhen Luo with her usual sweetness.

"Your Highness," she said softly, folding her hands. "I hope you're well rested."

Zhen Luo's gaze didn't leave the horizon. "Why are you here?"

"I wanted to speak with you… about Han Jian," she said, voice low, conspiratorial.

Zhen Luo's lips curved faintly. "You already have, haven't you?"

Li Shuran stiffened for a fraction of a breath. "I just want to protect your… reputation."

Zhen Luo raised an eyebrow. "By lying?"

Li Shuran blinked. "I…"

Before she could finish, a shadow flickered along the wall. Han Jian dropped silently behind a tree, eyes bright gold in the sunlight.

Li Shuran froze. Zhen Luo's gaze snapped toward him.

"You came," Zhen Luo said quietly, almost in relief.

Han Jian smiled lazily. "Someone has to remind her who she's playing with."

Li Shuran's lips twitched, anger masked behind false calm. "This isn't your place."

Han Jian's voice was soft but deadly. "Everything has a place, Lady Li. Some people just don't recognize it."

Zhen Luo stepped closer, closing the distance. "Enough," he said firmly. "Go back."

Han Jian tilted his head. "Or what?"

Zhen Luo's eyes darkened, just enough to send a shiver down Li Shuran's spine.

"Or I'll remind everyone," Zhen Luo said, "that loyalty has a face."

Meanwhile, Bai Zehan and Luo Xian had reached the storage room.

"Found it," Bai Zehan whispered, pointing to the scroll marked with the Queen's seal.

Luo Xian grabbed it, eyes sharp. "This is enough. If anyone sees this—"

"Then they'll know we're meddling," Bai Zehan finished.

A long pause. Then both of them laughed quietly, a sound half-mischief, half-terrified adrenaline.

"Do you think Han Jian already knows?" Bai Zehan asked.

Luo Xian's lips curved faintly. "Of course. He knows everything."

By nightfall, the threads in the palace had shifted.

Li Shuran withdrew into her rooms, fuming silently. The Queen grew cautious, realizing that every move she made could backfire.

Zhen Luo returned to the Eastern Palace, gaze softening only when he caught sight of Han Jian waiting quietly on the balcony.

"You always show up," he murmured.

Han Jian smiled faintly, brushing his hand along the railing. "And you always notice."

Zhen Luo's lips pressed together. "Stay close. Only tonight."

Han Jian's eyes glimmered. "Always, Your Highness."

Above the city, lanterns swayed in the wind, shadows twisting along the palace walls. The net had been cast.

And now, it was beginning to tighten.
