"I mean…" Amara began.
"Why?" He looked at her with the expression of a man trying to understand something and finding the understanding just beyond his reach. "Why are you happy? What is there for you to be happy about in this specific scenario?"
"Well," Amara said carefully, "your mother is happy. That is a good thing."
"Yes."
"And she is safe. She thought about everything. She has a contract, she has a man who doesn't want or need anything from her except her company, she has her health and her freedom, and apparently a great deal of sunlight."
