Chapter 80
(A Different Sword)
The first exchange lasted less than a heartbeat.
Yet by the time it ended, another pillar collapsed.
Stone exploded behind Kaien as Ashveil completed its arc, the severed upper half of the pillar sliding away before crashing into the floor. Dust rolled through the chamber, swallowing the broken altar beneath a pale cloud.
Dark Pryan didn't stop.
The instant his blade passed empty air, he stepped again.
No recovery.
No wasted motion.
His feet barely touched the ground before another strike followed.
Kaien retreated only as much as necessary.
Half a step.
A slight turn of his shoulder.
The sword passed close enough for its edge to brush the loose strands of his hair.
The movement was impossibly precise.
Watching from afar, it would have appeared as though Kaien wasn't dodging at all.
He simply wasn't where the blade arrived.
Dark Pryan understood immediately.
His attacks changed.
The sharp, decisive cuts gave way to flowing combinations that linked one strike into the next without interruption. Every miss became the beginning of another attack. Every movement stole away the possibility of a counter.
Ashveil danced through the chamber.
The swordsmanship belonged to Pryan.
The execution did not.
Kaien recognized every stance.
He had taught many of them himself.
Yet they had become something else.
Unnecessary movements had vanished.
Transitions had become seamless.
Every weakness that naturally accompanied a human swordsman had disappeared.
Dark Pryan wasn't inventing techniques.
He was perfecting them.
Ashveil thrust toward Kaien's chest.
A fraction before the blade arrived, it changed direction, becoming a slash aimed at his shoulder instead.
Kaien shifted.
The sword grazed the sleeve of his coat.
Cloth drifted gently to the ground.
Dark Pryan didn't celebrate.
He had expected more.
Again.
Ashveil flashed.
Again.
Again.
The chamber echoed with the sharp cry of steel cutting empty air.
Kaien continued yielding inches.
Never more.
Never less.
Every dodge seemed almost lazy.
Yet Dark Pryan couldn't touch him.
Not properly.
The exchange continued across the ruined chamber, their footsteps carrying them over broken ritual circles and collapsed stone.
A shattered column became an obstacle.
Dark Pryan stepped onto its side without slowing.
Using the incline, he launched himself downward.
Gravity became another weapon.
Ashveil descended in a vertical strike powerful enough to split the floor itself.
Kaien moved aside.
The blade struck stone.
A deafening crack echoed through the chamber.
The ancient floor split open for nearly twenty meters before stopping at the edge of the great seal.
Fragments of stone rained through the underground hall.
Dark Pryan had already moved again.
He didn't wait to see the result.
His sword emerged from the cloud of dust almost silently.
Kaien raised a hand.
His fingers met the flat of the blade.
For the first time...
They pushed.
Ashveil shifted only slightly.
Dark Pryan's eyes narrowed.
Kaien had redirected the strike.
The sword slid harmlessly past him.
The force behind it continued forward, destroying another section of the wall.
Dark Pryan immediately understood.
He wasn't avoiding strength.
He was borrowing it.
Every attack that should have landed instead became the cause of another ruined section of the chamber.
He had been fighting this way from the beginning.
Dark Pryan smiled.
A genuine one.
"Excellent."
He vanished.
This time even the sound of his footsteps disappeared.
The chamber fell strangely quiet.
Kaien closed his eyes.
He listened.
The faint scrape of leather.
The disturbance of dust.
The smallest shift in the surrounding mana.
Ashveil appeared behind him.
Kaien turned.
The blade met his forearm.
A dull shock rippled through the chamber.
For the first time...
Kaien blocked.
Dark Pryan's eyes widened slightly.
He hadn't expected contact.
The moment their bodies met, Kaien stepped forward instead of backward.
His shoulder struck Dark Pryan's chest.
The impact threw him several meters away.
He landed lightly upon broken stone, sliding only a short distance before stopping.
No injury.
No imbalance.
He had recovered before his feet even settled.
"...Interesting."
Dark Pryan's voice remained calm.
"So this is the difference between combat experience and technique."
Kaien didn't answer.
He simply watched.
Dark Pryan rolled Ashveil once within his hand.
Then he changed his stance.
Pryan had never used this one.
The sword lowered.
His body relaxed.
His center of gravity shifted.
Kaien's expression changed ever so slightly.
"You learned quickly."
"I observed."
Dark Pryan stepped forward.
Not fast.
Not slow.
The pace felt ordinary.
Yet the instant Kaien responded—
Dark Pryan disappeared.
Not through speed.
Through timing.
He moved exactly as Kaien shifted his weight.
Their rhythms overlapped perfectly.
Ashveil emerged from Kaien's blind side.
A clean strike.
The blade crossed Kaien's side.
A thin line appeared across his coat.
Then blood.
Only a little.
But enough.
A single crimson drop struck the stone.
Silence.
Dark Pryan lowered Ashveil.
"I see."
"You bleed."
Kaien looked briefly toward the shallow cut across his side.
Then back at Dark Pryan.
"So I do."
Dark Pryan's expression remained unchanged.
But within his eyes...
Satisfaction.
Not pride.
Confirmation.
He had proven something.
He could reach Kaien.
Perhaps only once.
Perhaps only barely.
But he could.
Kaien brushed the blood from his fingertips.
The cut wasn't deep.
Dark Pryan had deliberately sacrificed power for certainty.
The correct decision.
Against anyone else...
It would have ended the battle.
Kaien exhaled quietly.
The chamber had changed.
The floor beneath them was fractured beyond recognition.
Half the pillars supporting the ceiling had collapsed.
Dust drifted endlessly through shafts of pale light.
The ritual chamber that had endured centuries of history was slowly being erased.
Neither combatant looked away.
Dark Pryan lifted Ashveil once more.
This time...
Kaien adjusted his footing.
Only slightly.
For the first time since the battle had begun...
He accepted a proper stance.
The air inside the chamber grew heavy.
The fight until now...
Had only been observation.
Now both understood the other.
The real battle was about to begin.
