Chapter 52 - The Shape of Patience

The days following council did not erupt into immediate conflict.

Instead, Grimridge entered a period of careful stillness that felt more dangerous than open hostility. Wolves moved through the pack house and surrounding lands with disciplined calm, yet beneath that calm lay an unmistakable awareness that the world beyond their borders had begun paying closer attention.

Council had not reduced interest. It had sharpened it with a lot more. Sable felt the shift in subtle ways that were difficult to explain to anyone who had not lived inside pack politics long enough to recognize the patterns. Patrols were not encountering enemies, yet they were encountering signs. Tracks that lingered too long near neutral paths. Broken branches where no hunting party had reason to pass. The faint scent of unfamiliar wolves drifting across ridgelines at dawn and disappearing before scouts could trace them.
