Synopsis
On the lush alien world of Pandora live the Na'vi, beings who appear primitive but are highly evolved. Because the planet's environment is poisonous, human/Na'vi hybrids, called Avatars, must link to human minds to allow for free movement on Pandora. Ruby Sully, a former gymnist fighter pilot, becomes mobile again through one such Avatar and befriends a Na'vi man. As a bond with him grows, she is drawn into a battle for the survival of his world.

Chapter 1 - Ruby's life on Earth

This year is 2148, and this planet is dying. My name is Ruby Sully. I have two brothers, Tom Sully and Jake Sully. Both have been around for me for as long as I can remember. I loved them both with everything I have since it was just the three of us, as our parents were gone. Jake and I got into the Marines. He was a soldier on the ground; I was a fighter pilot. Jake got paralyzed from the waist down. I was fighting in the field with him from the sky in Venezuela for resources. Stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of his life since no one would do anything for Jake to allow him to walk again. There is technology to fix paralysis. No one will help Jake, so the military dishonourably discharged him. I left the Marines; I didn't care what others thought or did about it.

I was the best fighter pilot in my field. And they did everything to keep me, but I refused. I told them my demands, but they didn't comply, so I just left. Tommy and I were brought in for travelling across space to another planet. I agreed to go with Tom because I couldn't let him go alone out there. I am currently in my apartment, and I get some money here and there to deal with whatever dangers are out there. I have a mask to wear sometimes when going outside my apartment. The screen on my wall was playing, showing a zoo, playing footage of an extinct species of tiger cloned and being called a species comeback.

"Tch, leave those animals alone, they lived through this planet's hell once, leave them alone," I said aloud to myself as I got dressed in a belly shirt, some skin-tight pants and a set of boots. Before I could go out, my handheld screen started ringing. I picked it up but didn't recognize the number. I thought it was a new offer, so I answered it.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Is this Ruby Sully?" A male voice on the end of the phone said.

"This is she," I replied.

"We need you to come and confirm a man," the man said.

"Confirm?" I asked.

"Yes," the voice replied. "We believe it's your brother, Tom Sully."
