Rose's Point Of View
I shook my head frantically, tears blurring my vision until Seraphina became just a soft, gold-and-crimson smudge sitting across from me. My chest heaved with the effort of trying to speak through the wreckage of my own sobs, each breath scraping raw against my throat like broken glass.
"No, Phina, no! Please, it's not like that, I swear to God it's not like that!" I choked out, my voice high and jagged, completely broken by the sheer panic clawing at my throat. "You are my friend! You're the best friend I've ever had in my life!"
"Then why didn't you treat me like one, Rose?" Seraphina snapped, her lower lip trembling violently as she stared at me. She squeezed her eyes shut for a second, a single, fat tear spilling over her lashes, before snapping them open again. Something in her expression cracked further, as though the question had cost her more than she wanted to admit.
