Chapter 7 - 7. The Player

POV — BETTY

My first FREE day. The first thing I did was find a lawyer and sue Paula. Valuable years of my life were stolen by the hell that this woman created at work. That has a price. But not the shallow salary the company handed out every month. Oh no, not at all!The price is that, this time, someone met her match—a person who will pay back, handsomely, exactly what she built around others. Someone who gathered the courage for revenge.

I was so wrapped up in my desire for revenge that I only thought about Gabriel in the evening, with my sister by my side. Was I using him as a tool for my goal?Halfway, yes.

In the evening my conscience woke up, and I questioned the whole thing.Paula deserves to finally have someone more skilled take her place, but I cannot taint my life with Paula's memory.Instead, this morning, on my first FREE day, I sued Paula. In the office, may the better one win.

I don't regret inviting Gabriel for another meeting yesterday afternoon, driven by revenge.I checked his social media. He was online, so I sent him a smiling picture. A photo with my sister.I felt guilty and wanted to be kind to him.

"See? I'm still thinking about you even in the evening!"

A photo with my sister doesn't count as pushing. In the morning I reclaimed control over my life, my capital-L LIFE. I gave myself three full days off before focusing on my own projects.I signed up for yoga. Bought a theater season pass. Then I just listened to pleasant music, lying on my bed, letting the three years of oppression leave my soul and mind.

Soon I will meet Gabriel.I admit it—Naberius has become my role model. He told me he also tasted freedom recently. He's so passionate about what he does and does it so well that his following exploded within days.

What will I do with myself now?Oh…first, I'll take a short course. Just so I have a certificate, some proof that I actually know what I'm doing.I'll live off my hobby. No matter how hard and uncertain this path is.

Soon I will meet Gabriel…I won't even mention Paula today. We have plenty of other things to talk about.Yesterday afternoon already showed enough of that.

I grabbed my makeup kit and today allowed myself to get ready especially thoroughly for this date.I won't say I was entirely satisfied with the final result.

I met Gabriel outside the hall. The same hall where Naberius would give his lecture today. Before we entered, he held my hand.I was a little surprised, but it felt so natural how our hands fit together.I didn't mind it at all.

I glanced at him sideways. I saw he was doing the same.We smiled at each other.Sometimes words aren't needed. Sometimes souls that are alike just happen to drift next to each other.

I was surprised that Naberius waved at Gabriel so friendly. How could they know each other? Gabriel only moved to town a few days ago. Then the lecture held my attention.

Afterward, I didn't need to excuse myself. I was heading to my sister's little daughter's birthday. You could say I left Gabriel behind with a clumsy "sorry."He'll write me if he wants a continuation.

Time at my sister's was pleasant too, although I think those two glasses of wine were a bit much.Gabriel didn't write that evening. I knew he was strategizing.

I smiled.I'm going to strategize too.

I'm in the game.
