Chapter 22 - A SIN TO REMEMBER

Chapter Twenty-Two: The Shape of Almost

Marcus did not return loudly.

He appeared the way certain memories do — quietly, without permission.

Lila saw him across a street she had no reason to be on, standing still while the world moved around him. For a moment she thought grief had finally turned visual. But then he looked at her.

And she knew.

They did not speak. Not then. The restraint was unbearable, intimate in its violence. Marcus nodded once, a gesture that carried apology, recognition, and refusal all at once.

Lila went home shaking.

That night, she told Ethan nothing. Not because she wanted to deceive him, but because language felt inadequate. How did one explain the return of a feeling that never truly left?

Marcus reached out days later. One message. No questions. No demands.

I won't touch your life. I just needed you to know I exist.

Existence, she realized, was the most dangerous offering of all.

She felt him everywhere afterward — not physically, but emotionally. As contrast. As reminder. As the outline of a life that demanded more of her than endurance.

Ethan sensed the shift. The air between them thickened with unsaid truths. Their conversations shortened. Their glances lingered too long or not at all.

Lila stood in the middle of it, suffocating on almosts.

Almost faithful.

Almost honest.

Almost free.
