The hall absorbed this in silence.
Jason looked at the King for a long moment. Something moved behind his eyes — not anger exactly, more the specific expression of a man who had hoped, without quite believing, that it wouldn't come to this, and was now making peace with the fact that it had.
"She was claimed," Jason said, "by a man who had no right to claim her. Because she was already mine to give or withhold. And I was never consulted."
"Pack law—"
"Pack law," Jason said, and for the first time his voice carried an edge, "does not supersede a father's bond. And you know that."
