Chapter 21 - PARANOIA HAS A NAME

Valencrest – Relational Evaluation Sector

Day 3 of the Examination

First Hour – Time Remaining: 02:59:59

The door closed.

But this time, no one spoke right away.

There was no need.

Eyes moved like slow blades, studying every detail:

who sat down first,

who avoided the center,

who was breathing too fast.

Kael sat down last.

Not because he wanted attention.

But because it forced the others to wonder why.

Silence has become suspicious, he thought.

Perfect.

SCENE 1 – THE HUNT BEGINS

"Alright," said the girl with short hair, her voice harder than usual.

"Yesterday we went in circles. Not today."

The tall boy nodded. "Someone here is guiding the conversation without exposing themselves."

A glance—brief. Direct.

Toward Kael.

"Don't you agree?" he asked.

Kael tilted his head slightly.

"That depends," he replied.

"Are you looking for the one who lies… or the one who wins?"

The room stiffened.

"What does that mean?" someone snapped.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

He let the discomfort grow.

"The one who lies wants to survive," he said at last.

"The one who wins wants others to make mistakes."

The sentence lingered.

Now they associate the idea with me, he thought.

But they have no proof.

SCENE 2 – INVISIBLE ACTION

Second Hour – Time Remaining: 01:57:34

The conversation deteriorated.

Indirect accusations.

Phrases like "something doesn't convince me" and "it doesn't add up" flew around without truly landing.

Kael spoke little.

But every time he did, the weight shifted.

"Yesterday," he said at one point, looking at the quiet girl,

"you said the vote scared you."

She nodded. "Yes. Because of the points."

Kael paused.

"And today you seem much calmer."

It wasn't an accusation.

It was an observation.

The girl went pale.

"Because I thought about it," she defended herself. "That's not a crime."

"No," Kael said.

"But it is a change."

Another student cut in. "Wait… yesterday you were shaking."

"Now you're not," someone else added.

The girl stood up abruptly. "Are you accusing me for how I breathe?!"

Kael lowered his gaze.

I didn't accuse her, he thought.

I just made her visible.

SCENE 3 – FEAR BECOMES A WEAPON

Third Hour – Time Remaining: 00:44:19

The wristband displays lit up.

REMINDER: FINAL VOTE IMMINENT

The number 1000 glowed beside each Observer's name.

"We can't lose points," someone said, their voice cracking.

"If we're wrong, we all pay."

"Then we need a safe target," the tall boy replied.

Kael lifted his gaze.

"There is no safety," he said quietly.

"Only convenient choices."

"And what do you suggest?" the girl with short hair pressed him.

Kael slowly stood.

He didn't dominate the room.

He occupied it.

"I suggest you ask yourselves who, in this room,

has never shown fear of losing points."

Silence.

One.

Two.

Three pairs of eyes turned toward him.

Kael didn't defend himself.

There it is, he thought.

Now I'm the problem.

SCENE 4 – AFTER THE THREE HOURS

Valencrest – Exit Corridor

Day 3 / Afternoon

The door opened.

No one spoke anymore.

Two students walked ahead of Kael, whispering.

"He's too composed."

"Yeah… like he already knows who to vote for."

The wristband vibrated.

INTERNAL UPDATE

OBSERVATION: ALTERED DYNAMICS

Kael didn't smile this time.

They're tightening the circle, he thought.

And I'm only using half.

FINAL – UNRESOLVED SITUATION

Valencrest – Outer Dormitories

Day 3 / Night

Kael entered his room.

A sheet of paper lay on the bed.

It hadn't been there before.

Just one sentence, handwritten:

"Tomorrow we won't vote for the one who lies."

"We'll vote for the one who controls."

Kael slowly closed the door.

For the first time since the exam began,

he felt his heartbeat quicken.

Interesting, he thought.

Someone understands the game.

And tomorrow,

the game would answer.
