Valencrest – North Dormitories / Night
Day 8 / After Completing the First Phase of the Exam
The first phase of the exam was finally over. The three false impostors had been officially removed, the civilians had lost points, and I had secured my hidden advantage. Everyone thought it was finished. Everyone except me.
Sitting on the edge of my bed, I calmly observed the corridor. The bracelet vibrated slightly: automatic confirmation of the results from the just-completed test. The civilians were exhausted, confused, unaware of how manipulated they had been. The "official" impostors had been expelled, and the tension from the vote had given way to an apparent calm.
But it wasn't true silence. I could feel it. A subtle shift in the air, imperceptible to anyone else, yet as clear as a light signal to someone who knows every movement, every human breath. Someone had entered the dormitory without permission.
The headmaster had said just before:
"A boy will act silently. You won't know who he is. Your first years won't meet your expectations. Don't try to discover him immediately. Observe. Learn."
And now, that promise was becoming real.
Valencrest – Dormitory Corridor / Night
Moving through the hallways, steps light, hands behind my back, I felt every vibration: the rustle of fabric, the slightest weight shift on the floor, the controlled breath of someone moving silently. The new intruder didn't need to reveal himself. His presence was evident only through indirect effects: small movements from civilians, a subtle imbalance in the air pressure, the tiniest difference between a "dead" corridor and a "living" one.
I wasn't in a hurry. I didn't speak. I didn't move a single unnecessary muscle. It was an invisible pattern of action: observe, assess, wait. Every second increased the tension. Every civilian's breath became a small heartbeat in my perception.
A bracelet vibrated: +50 points for acute observation. Worthless, but it confirmed the system was tracking everything. I already knew where the enemy was. I hadn't seen the face, hadn't heard a voice, but every movement in the room was under my mental control.
Valencrest – North Library / Midnight
I decided to move to the library. A perfect environment for the intruder: tall shelves, deep shadows, hidden corridors. But perfect for me as well. Here, I could hear everything: the faintest rustle, a step slightly too heavy, tension hiding behind a slow breath.
Sitting among the shelves, I watched the civilians collect books, moving absentmindedly. The new intruder didn't need to strike immediately. He was observing. Acting from behind doors, creating tension, manipulating the perception of those present. Every small mistake the civilians made confirmed his influence.
The bracelet vibrated again: +100 points for observation. I smiled slightly inside. Small signals. Small clues, enough for someone experienced like me.
Valencrest – Common Room / Late Night
Then something subtle happened, almost imperceptible: a parallel corridor shifted slightly, as if someone was moving weight across the floor. Controlled breathing. Silent movement. The enemy had begun interacting directly with the environment without revealing himself.
I crouched behind a column, watching. No real risk. Not yet. But the game had truly begun.
The headmaster had designed this phase of the exam to be "favorable" to first-years. On the surface, it was simple: three hours to complete a task, testing observation and cooperation skills. But who could sense an invisible enemy? Only someone with experience, like me. Only someone who could read what wasn't visible.
Valencrest – Library Corridor / Minutes Later
The first direct movement occurred. A door opened slightly, without creaking. The enemy advanced silently, almost imperceptibly. I sensed the direction of the step, the slight weight shift, the reaction speed.
He wasn't an ordinary student. His experience and training were evident. His calmness matched mine, yet I didn't know him. I had no idea who he was, what he wanted, or why he had been sent. But I knew one thing: he was trying to manipulate the test in his favor, and I would not allow it.
Sitting behind a shelf, I breathed slowly. The library's silence was complete, yet uneasy. Every shadow could conceal the enemy. Every corridor could be a trap. But I was ready.
A thought crossed my mind:
"I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. But whatever move you make, I'll always be one step ahead. Because I know the best game: the one played in the shadows."
Valencrest – Dormitory Corridor / End of Session
The three hours passed slowly. The enemy had not yet revealed himself directly. But I knew he was there. No attack, no word, only presence. Presence enough to raise tension, make civilians doubt, destabilize the first-years.
The headmaster had designed this scenario with a clear purpose: to test the first-years and allow Kael to demonstrate his skill without exposing the school to real risk. But the enemy was real. Invisible. Silent. Ready to turn the environment into a mental battlefield.
I walked slowly toward the dormitory door. No visible movement. No voice. Just a subtle shiver down the spine. The new intruder was there—and I knew it.
The last thought before entering my room:
"The first phase is over. The second has just begun. And the game… is finally real."
The corridor remained empty. Silent. But the tension was palpable, as if every shadow could move at any moment. I was ready. And the intruder knew I would find him.
