Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The First Taste of Rank Two

The northern reaches of Blackcloud grew wilder with every li traveled. Trees gave way to sparse, twisted pines clinging to sheer rock faces. Wind howled through narrow passes like the breath of dying giants. Few cultivators ventured this far—most feared the increasing density of rank-three and rank-four gu beasts, the sudden qi storms, the pockets of chaotic essence that could tear an unprepared aperture apart.

Lin Xuan welcomed it all.

His current state:

- Cultivation: Rank 1 peak (aperture fully expanded, ready for breakthrough)

- Gu: Venom Thorn (r1 peak), Moonlight (r1 peak), Black Skin (r1 peak), Time Cicada (r1 initial), Illusion Venom Moth (r1 peak), Chain Binding (r3 damaged), Hellfire Blade token (r3), Gale Cutter core (salvageable)

- Resources: 62 mid-grade spirit stones, Aperture Expanding Dew (r3), Thunder Essence Berries (x10), wolf/moth/vine cores, transmission jade slip (Lin Clan codes decrypted)

- Golden Cicada Gu: 58% → rank 1 awakening imminent with proper catalyst

He needed only one thing now: a breakthrough catalyst strong enough to force his aperture past the mortal threshold into rank two.

The Aperture Expanding Dew was perfect—rank-three liquid essence refined from a legendary spring in the central continent. One drop could push a peak rank-one cultivator to rank two initial with minimal risk… if their foundation was stable.

His foundation was forged in five centuries of death and rebirth. Risk meant nothing.

He found shelter in a shallow cave halfway up a sheer cliff—natural formation, no gu beast scent, minimal qi leakage. Safe enough.

He sat cross-legged on bare stone, back against the wall.

First, he consumed three Thunder Essence Berries in sequence. Lightning essence crackled through his meridians, tempering flesh and qi channels. Pain bloomed like fire under skin—welcomed.

Next, the Aperture Expanding Dew.

He uncorked the vial. One shimmering drop hovered at the lip—iridescent, heavier than it looked.

He tipped it onto his tongue.

It tasted like liquid starlight laced with iron.

The moment it touched his tongue, his aperture spasmed.

Essence flooded every meridian, every acupoint. His sea of consciousness expanded violently—walls cracking, then reforming thicker, wider. Rank-two threshold loomed like a dam about to burst.

He circulated every technique he knew simultaneously: the basic qi-gathering manual, fragments of demonic path breathing from his past lives, even the instinctive rhythm of the Time Cicada's wings.

Pain escalated to white-hot agony.

Most would scream.

Lin Xuan smiled through gritted teeth.

"This is nothing," he whispered. "I have been torn apart by heavenly lightning, devoured by gu swarms, soul-crushed by righteous sects. This… is merely transition."

His aperture shuddered once more—then stabilized.

A soft crack echoed in his mind.

Rank two initial stage.

The world sharpened. Colors brighter, sounds crisper, spiritual sense extending twice as far. His body felt lighter, stronger—muscles denser, bones like tempered steel.

He opened his eyes.

Crimson flickered in his pupils for a heartbeat, then faded back to deep black.

Satisfaction settled in his chest—cold, complete.

But he did not celebrate.

He immediately began refining his existing gu.

First: Venom Thorn + Illusion Venom Moth.

He placed both in the center of his aperture, circulated rank-two qi around them. The two poison-path gu resonated, merging slowly under his will.

After three hours: a new gu formed.

[Venom Mirage Gu — rank 2 initial. Effect: Releases a cloud of illusory venom that induces realistic hallucinations of being poisoned/rotting alive while inflicting actual corrosive damage over time. Synergy bonus with existing poison gu.]

Acceptable.

Next: Chain Binding Gu (damaged).

He fed it fragments of the Gale Cutter core and a mid-grade spirit stone. Silver links reformed, now tinged with faint wind affinity.

[Chain Binding Gu — rank 2 peak (repaired + minor evolution). Effect: Moonlight chains that can now bind and slightly restrict qi flow on contact.]

Better.

Hellfire Blade token he set aside—too aggressive for current needs. He would refine it later when he had fire-affinity support.

Finally, the Golden Cicada egg.

It had been greedily drinking ambient essence during the breakthrough. Now at 78%.

He placed the three remaining enforcer soul remnants (harvested earlier) before it.

Golden threads shot out—devouring what little remained.

The egg cracked along one seam.

A tiny, perfect cicada emerged—golden wings translucent, body radiating faint temporal ripples.

It perched on his fingertip.

[Golden Cicada Gu — rank 1 initial (newly awakened). Effect: Accelerates time within a small radius (self or target). Can age objects/enemies slightly or hasten recovery of self. Potential to evolve into higher time-path variants with further sacrifices.]

Lin Xuan regarded the newborn gu with something approaching reverence—not for its power yet, but for what it represented.

"A seedling of eternity," he murmured. "Grow quickly. We have much to devour."

He stood.

Outside the cave, the wind had died. Stars burned coldly overhead.

His spiritual sense swept the surroundings—no immediate threats.

But far to the south, faint qi signatures approached—dozens, organized. Lin Clan pursuit party, likely rank three to four, perhaps even an elder leading.

They had found the valley of the enforcers.

They would find nothing but empty graves.

Lin Xuan stepped to the cave mouth.

He looked south.

"Come," he said to the night. "Bring your numbers. Bring your arrogance. Bring your hope of vengeance."

His voice carried no anger, no fear—only certainty.

"I will turn every one of you into another rung on the ladder."

The Golden Cicada on his fingertip buzzed once—soft, eager.

He leapt from the cliff.

Not downward.

Upward—qi propelling him in a long arc toward the next ridge.

Rank two.

One more step taken.

The Gu Dao stretched endlessly ahead.

And he walked it without hesitation, without mercy, without regret.
