Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: The Shadow Veil’s Retribution

The watchtower burned behind them like a fallen star—orange flames licking the night sky, visible for dozens of li in every direction. Lin Xuan and Hong Lian moved north at a relentless pace, using the ravine's cover to mask their trail. The Fate Cicada Fragment worked overtime—nudging small probabilities: a patrol's attention shifting east, a tracking gu misreading their qi as swamp vapor, a sudden rain squall washing away footprints.

They did not speak for the first two hours.

Only when the glow of the burning tower had faded to a distant ember did Hong Lian finally break the silence.

"We just killed a Shadow Veil representative. And ten bidders. And two rank-seven guards. The entire neutral underworld will know by dawn."

Lin Xuan kept walking.

"They will."

Hong Lian glanced at him sideways.

"You're not concerned?"

"Concern is wasted energy. Preparation is not."

He stopped at a narrow stream crossing and crouched—dipping his fingers into the cold water, letting the current wash away the last traces of blood on his skin.

"The Shadow Veil Clan will retaliate. They always do. But they move slowly—methodically. They will investigate first. They will confirm our involvement. They will place bounties. They will send hunters."

He rose.

"By the time their hunters reach us, we will be three provinces away. Stronger. Better prepared."

Hong Lian watched him.

"You already planned for this."

"I plan for everything."

She exhaled—half laugh, half sigh.

"Of course you do."

They crossed the stream and continued north.

After another hour of silent travel, Hong Lian spoke again—voice quieter this time.

"When you took the jade slip… you didn't hesitate. Not even when the representative offered surrender. You drained her completely."

Lin Xuan's pace did not falter.

"She would have traced us. She would have reported our appearance. She would have become a persistent threat. Persistent threats are eliminated."

Hong Lian's tone hardened slightly.

"She was rank-seven. She could have been useful. An ally. Information. Connections."

Lin Xuan finally looked at her.

"She was a loose end. Loose ends are cut."

Hong Lian stopped walking.

Lin Xuan stopped as well.

They stood facing each other in the middle of the ravine—moonlight filtering through the canopy above, casting dappled shadows across their faces.

Hong Lian's blood-red eyes searched his.

"Is that what I am to you? A loose end waiting to be cut?"

Lin Xuan met her gaze—unflinching, unapologetic.

"You are currently useful. Therefore you are not a loose end. The moment that changes—"

Hong Lian stepped closer—close enough that he could see the faint tremor of anger in her jaw.

"You really would kill me. Without hesitation. Without remorse. Just like the indigo-robe. Just like the representative. Just like every single person who ever stood in your way."

Lin Xuan's voice remained level.

"Yes."

Hong Lian stared at him for several long heartbeats.

Then she laughed—low, bitter, almost broken.

"I thought I could handle it. I thought I could match your ruthlessness. I thought… maybe I could make you see me as more than a tool."

She took one step back.

"But you're not capable of it. You're not broken. You're complete. A perfect machine of self-interest."

Lin Xuan did not deny it.

Hong Lian exhaled slowly.

"I'm done being your shadow."

She reached into her sleeve—produced the crimson jade token that marked her as a rogue of Crimson Lotus Pavilion.

She crushed it in her palm.

Blood welled between her fingers.

"I release you from any obligation. And I release myself from yours."

The temporary oath sigil on both their palms flared once—crimson and gold—then faded to nothing.

The year-long non-aggression pact dissolved.

Hong Lian looked at him one last time.

"If we meet again… it will not be as partners."

She turned.

And walked away—south, toward the distant lights of Jade Wave City.

Lin Xuan watched her go.

He did not call after her.

He did not pursue.

When her figure disappeared into the mist, he turned north once more.

Alone again.

The Fate Cicada Fragment pulsed—stronger than ever.

Rank three peak.

One step closer.

He resumed walking.

The ravine stretched ahead—empty, silent, indifferent.

Behind him, Hong Lian's footsteps faded into the night.

Ahead, the central provinces waited—richer prizes, stronger enemies, and no one left to slow him down.
