Chapter 82 - Chapter 82: Frostgate City – The First Northern Foothold

The road descended sharply after the pass, switchbacks cutting into the mountainside like steps carved by an impatient god. Pines thickened into forest; snow gave way to frozen earth, then to patches of hardy winter grass. The air warmed slightly still cold enough to burn lungs, but no longer thin enough to kill. By dusk on the twenty-ninth day since Cloudsoar, Lin Xuan and Hong Lian reached the first true northern city: Frostgate Hold.

It crouched at the mouth of the valley like a squat fortress high walls of dark granite veined with ice-blue arrays, towers topped with frost-giant skulls that still leaked faint cold qi. No elegance here. No jade spires. Only function. Frostgate existed to guard the pass south, tax the caravans north, and serve as the last safe stop before the true wilds of the northern heartlands.

The main gate was open two rank-seven guards in fur-lined black armor stood watch, qi probes sweeping every entrant. Lin Xuan and Hong Lian approached on foot mounts dismissed into apertures to avoid attention. Their auras remained suppressed: rank-four peak for him, rank-five initial for her. To any scan they looked like mid-tier rogues returning from a long hunt.

One guard stepped forward spear leveled casually.

"Names. Origin. Business."

Lin Xuan spoke first voice low, unhurried.

"No names worth recording. Southern borderlands. Seeking trade, refinement, and rest."

The probe swept them finding clean signatures, modest pouches, no demonic taint.

The spear lowered.

"Entry fee. Thirty mid-grades each."

Lin Xuan placed forty for both.

The guard pocketed the extra.

"Inner districts restricted after midnight. No fighting in public. No unregistered gu refinement. Break the rules, lose your head."

Lin Xuan nodded once.

They passed beneath the gate.

Frostgate was smaller than Iron Phoenix no grand rings, no towering spire but denser. Narrow streets of dark stone wound between low buildings of timber and granite. Forges glowed red in every alley; merchants shouted prices for rank-three to rank-five goods; mercenaries in fur cloaks drank in open-fronted taverns. The air smelled of pine smoke, hot iron, and spiced meat. Lanterns of blue ice-crystal hung from eaves cold light that cast long shadows.

Lin Xuan led them to the eastern quarter less patrolled, more shadowed. They found a small inn carved into the hillside: "Frostfang Rest." No sign. Only a rank-five array at the door that scanned for hostility.

They took a private room on the upper floor single window overlooking the street, thick walls, basic silencing array already active.

Door sealed.

Hong Lian spoke first.

"We're not invisible here. The bounty reached this far. They'll recognize your description soon."

Lin Xuan sat cross-legged on the floor back against the wall.

"Then we move fast."

He withdrew the Void Cicada Egg from his aperture.

The small, cracked egg hovered between them golden veins pulsing faintly against the black shell. Alive. Waiting.

Hong Lian looked at it.

"You plan to hatch it?"

Lin Xuan's voice was low.

"I plan to refine it. The egg is rank-eight peak. Hatching it naturally would take years. I will force the process. Use it to push toward rank six peak."

Hong Lian's eyes narrowed.

"Forcing a rank-eight gu birth risks backlash. Aperture rupture. Qi deviation. Even death."

Lin Xuan met her gaze.

"Risk is the price of speed."

He placed the egg on the floor between them.

He began circulating qi slow, precise feeding thin threads into the shell.

The egg trembled.

Golden veins brightened.

Hong Lian watched silent, still.

She spoke after a long moment.

"You didn't hesitate to use the remnant on the summit. You didn't hesitate to kill Huo Tian. You didn't hesitate to take the egg tonight."

Lin Xuan did not look up.

"Hesitation is death."

Hong Lian leaned forward slightly.

"And what about me?"

Lin Xuan's hands paused just for a heartbeat.

He looked at her.

"You are still useful."

Hong Lian's smile was small, sharp.

"For now."

She leaned back.

"Then let me be useful."

She extended her right hand palm up.

Crimson lotus essence flowed from her aperture pure, rank-six middle stage, warm against his cold time-path qi.

"Use my essence to stabilize the hatching. Lotus-path complements void and time. It will reduce backlash."

Lin Xuan studied her palm.

Then he placed his own hand over hers.

Their qi merged cold gold and warm crimson intertwining.

The egg pulsed brighter.

The veins spread cracks widening.

A faint chirp echoed in the room not sound, but vibration in their sea of consciousness.

The hatching began.

Power surged rank-six middle stage climbing toward peak.

Lin Xuan endured the influx meridians burning, aperture walls straining.

Hong Lian endured with him her qi steadying his.

The egg shattered.

A small, perfect cicada emerged wings black-edged gold, body radiating void-temporal ripples.

Rank-eight initial.

Void Cicada Gu.

It crawled onto Lin Xuan's palm.

It accepted his blood.

Power flooded him again rank six middle → rank six peak.

The breakthrough came with no sound no scream, no tremor.

Only silence.

Only cold certainty.

When the light faded, Lin Xuan opened his eyes.

Rank six peak.

One step closer.

Hong Lian withdrew her hand.

Her voice was quiet.

"You crossed peak."

Lin Xuan nodded once.

"Yes."

She looked at the cicada gu on his palm.

"You have a second rebirth now. One year rewind. Full cycle."

Lin Xuan stored the gu carefully wrapping it in layers of his own qi.

"I will not use it lightly."

Hong Lian rose.

She walked to the window looked out at the city lights.

"We have five days before the second wave arrives. We refine. We prepare. We vanish."

Lin Xuan rose.

He stood beside her looking at the same view.

"We vanish."

They turned from the window.

The city glowed below lanterns red against black stone.

Ahead lay the true northern heartlands endless cities, endless sects, endless opportunities.

And endless enemies.

Lin Xuan walked toward the door.

Hong Lian fell into step beside him.

No illusions.

No mercy.

No promises beyond the next breath.

Only eternity.

Cold.

Unrelenting.

Inevitable.
