Chapter 40 - Pack Bonds and Hidden Dominance

Nigel's phone vibrated on the table, but he ignored it. His grandmother had called, no doubt summoning him back to the Presgrave den, but today his instincts told him otherwise. Today, he was here, walking side by side with Anastasia and her little wolf, Jared, guiding them through the human world while keeping his Alpha presence subtle yet protective. Dinner at the Presgrave Residence could wait; the bond he was building now was just as important.

Over lunch, Nigel spoke of his return to the country, his voice calm but carrying the weight of Alpha authority. "I've come back to take my place in the family," he said, letting the words resonate like a subtle scent marking his intentions.

Anastasia's curiosity peeked through her calm, controlled exterior. "What exactly does your family do? Tell me specifically," she asked, her eyes probing, like a lone wolf trying to sniff out the true strength of another.

Nigel's lips curved into a faint, enigmatic smile. He had long hidden the breadth of his pack's influence abroad, letting her see him as just another capable young man. But now, the veil no longer seemed necessary. His gaze drifted toward the window, and he pointed. "That hotel outside the one shining above all others? That belongs to my pack."

Anastasia turned, her eyes widening at the sight of the 7-star fortress. Her mind, human though it was, struggled to grasp the dominance behind it. "Your family… owns this?" she whispered.

Nigel nodded. "Our pack has territories businesses in thirty-six countries. The hotel I interned at abroad… it's ours as well. I didn't mean to hide it from you, Anastasia." His tone was sincere, though underneath it pulsed the unspoken energy of someone who carries generations of pack authority.

She smiled warmly, the kind of smile that softened the edges of even the sharpest predator. "It's okay. I never expected you to be the young Alpha of such a powerful pack."

"Don't say that," he said quickly, leaning just slightly forward, the subtle dominance in his posture like a wolf asserting his presence without aggression. "To you… I'm still me. Nothing has changed."

Anastasia shrugged, the human equivalent of a playful wag of a tail. "I'm lucky to be friends with you! I can proudly tell the world that I'm friends with you."

Nigel's lips twitched into a wry smile, his instincts tightening like a low growl beneath his calm exterior. She wanted friendship, nothing more… for now. But he could wait. The pack's patience, the slow burn of claiming territory and heart alike, was a lesson well learned.

The afternoon drifted into playful chaos. Nigel accompanied Jared on a spree through the shops, his presence a mix of Alpha protection and indulgence. Every toy, every outfit drew joy from the little wolf, and Nigel watched, amused and quietly impressed. Had Anastasia not intervened, the boy might have left the store with enough treasures to rival a human palace.

Anastasia, the ever-diligent guardian, drew the boundaries. "You can't spoil him too much," she warned gently, though her eyes betrayed both amusement and awe at Nigel's willingness to indulge the boy.

Jared, sensing the energy of two Alphas around him one maternal, one protective glowed with excitement, darting from one gift to another. Every laugh, every sparkle in his eyes fed the bond Nigel was quietly cementing. This was more than wealth or influence it was pack loyalty, trust, and the magnetic pull of dominance tempered by kindness.

By the end of the day, the little wolf was exhausted but elated, clutching the spoils of a day well spent. And Nigel, as he watched Anastasia gently guide her son, felt the stirrings of an instinctual bond forming not just to the boy, but to her as well. A mate, a pack, a bond waiting to be claimed.

This was the modern world, yes but beneath the glass and steel, beneath polite words and exchanged smiles, the law of the pack ruled supreme. And Nigel was already marking his territory, not with claws or teeth, but with patience, protection, and the slow, undeniable pull of Alpha dominance.

Jared disappeared into his room, his small paws shuffling excitedly as he unpacked the treasures Nigel had brought. The apartment hummed with a quiet energy half domestic warmth, half the taut, invisible pulse of pack instincts lingering in the air. I poured a glass of water for Nigel, my curiosity nudging me like a wolf's instinctual nudge. "Nigel… do you know Elliot?"

His reaction was instantaneous. He nearly choked, coughing into a hand as he tried to cover it, his sleek features contorting with surprise. "Anastasia… you're not… in love with him, are you?"

I froze for a moment, blinking. "Why would you think that?"

He leaned back slightly, grinning but with an undercurrent of pack pride, like a wolf wary of a rival in his territory. "I admit… he's the only man in this world sharper, stronger, more commanding than me. I'm worried you'll fall for him and if that happens, I don't stand a chance in the fight."

My frown deepened, curiosity flickering with unease. "You… know him?"

"He's my cousin," Nigel said matter-of-factly, his calm confidence radiating like an Alpha's presence.

I froze. My mind raced. Elliot… Nigel's cousin? That explained the strength behind the family, the dominance that always lingered subtly around him. No wonder his pack's influence stretched far beyond appearances.

Nigel's gaze softened, almost teasing, yet there was a sharp edge beneath it. "I know he's acquired QR International Group, and now he's your new Alpha in the workplace. So… do you like him?"

I waved the question off, cool as ice. "No. Don't talk nonsense. Do you think I'm superficial enough to fall for appearances alone?"

A chuckle rumbled from Nigel, low and teasing. "Of course not. I know your spirit is untamed, eccentric… otherwise, your senses would have been drawn to me long ago. Even my pack would have noticed."

I smiled, though the warmth was tinged with unease, glancing at the clock. "It's already 5:30. Aren't you supposed to return to your family den for the evening hunt?"

He nodded, his wolf-like poise unshaken. "I'll contact you tomorrow then." He bent down, ruffling Jared's hair with the ease of a protector, a cousin in spirit if not by blood, before departing.

Alone on the sofa, I sank into the cushions, thoughts spinning like a restless pack. Elliot's ties to Nigel explained so much the strength of his presence, the invisible authority that made others instinctively obey, the restraint he showed the night of that… encounter. Was he afraid of humiliation, even in the presence of someone he didn't consider a threat? The question lingered, gnawing at me like a silent predator.

Monday arrived, crisp and expectant. I watched Jared pad off to kindergarten, his small frame already carrying the spark of a pack in the making. My chest tightened with the quiet pride of a mother and Alpha in her own right. Peace of mind followed me to work, even as the human world began its chaotic rhythm around me.

No sooner had I stepped into the office than all eyes turned toward me. The subtle shifts in energy, the quickened pulses, the flickers of curiosity it all signaled something had changed. I didn't yet understand what, until a female assistant approached, voice dripping with gossip and awe. "Miss Tillman… your… boyfriend is so handsome!"

Boyfriend? My ears twitched, instincts flaring. In the pack, such claims could mean territory, mating rights, or dominance none of which I had sanctioned. My gaze hardened as I scanned the room, aware that in a world ruled by pack laws, even a whisper could ignite challenges. And yet… in my chest, a flicker of something human, something wild, stirred.

Boyfriend? No. Not yet. But the pack… the game… was already beginning.
