Chapter 215 - Invitations and Circles of Intent

"Haven't we just eaten?" I said, glancing at the time. It was a little past noon, and lunch had barely settled.

Marcus raised a brow at me. "You call that lunch?" I had no answer for that. I pressed my lips together and thought about it honestly. "I can't think of what I want right now," I admitted.

The car moved through the city center, and I found myself watching the streets out of habit. Then a dessert shop caught my eye, the kind with a line stretching half a block. Something about the crowd around it made me curious. "Is it that good?" I asked, leaning slightly toward the window. "Look at how many people are waiting."

Marcus glanced over, then smoothly pulled the car to the side of the road. He looked at me with that calm, certain energy he always carried. "Stay in the car. It's cold out. I'll be back soon." He didn't wait for my response before he stepped out and jogged toward the back of the queue.
