Sam watched city buildings fade into stretches of open road and sky, her curiosity growing with every minute. The wind through the half-open window smelled different now—saltier, lighter, warm in a way she hadn't felt in ages.
"Alex..." Sam leaned toward the window, peeking out before turning back to her. "Where are we going?"
Alexandra only smiled, her fingers tapping the steering wheel in a rhythm that matched her excitement. "Just trust me, baby."
Sam sighed dramatically. "That's what you said before pretending to kidnap me."
"And look how well that turned out," Alexandra teased, eyes glimmering.
A few minutes later, the scenery opened into a vast stretch of coastline—the ocean glittering under the late afternoon sun, waves brushing the shore in gentle, rhythmic sighs. Palm trees swayed lazily, and a soft breeze carried the scent of salt and sunscreen.
Sam's mouth fell open.
The car rolled to a stop in a private beach cove, the sand pristine, untouched, shimmering like powdered gold.
"Alexandra... what is this?"
Alexandra hopped out of the car, practically glowing as she walked around to open Sam's door. "A break," she said softly. "A real one."
Behind her, arranged under a soft white canopy, was a small picnic setup—pillows, blankets, a basket, a cooler, a speaker already playing soft music. And next to it all, a surfboard painted bright blue with white waves.
Sam blinked. "You... you planned this?"
Alexandra offered her hand. "Come on. You need fresh air, sunshine, food, affection... and maybe for once, fun instead of spreadsheets."
Sam took her hand, letting Alexandra pull her into the warm sand. She could feel the grains between her toes, the soft warmth radiating up her legs, the ocean breeze brushing against her skin. The tension she'd been carrying for weeks seemed to thaw with each step.
"This is..." Sam looked around, overwhelmed. "Alex, it's beautiful."
Alexandra brushed a thumb along Sam's cheek. "You've been exhausted, overworked, stressed... and you never stop. So I'm stopping the world for you. Just today."
Sam let out a soft laugh, the sound airy and free. "I can't believe you did all this."
"I'd bring you the entire ocean if I could," Alexandra murmured.
On the Beach
They slipped off their shoes and walked closer to the shoreline, waves kissing their ankles. Alexandra splashed Sam lightly with her foot—a quick flick of water.
Sam gasped. "Did you just—"
Alexandra splashed her again.
"Oh, it's ON," Sam declared.
She scooped a handful of water and flung it toward Alexandra, who shrieked and dodged, laughing loudly. What started as small splashes became full-blown playful chaos—Sam chasing Alexandra down the shoreline, catching her by the waist, both of them breathless from laughter.
Alexandra fell back onto the sand, pulling Sam with her, and they lay there for a moment, breathless, chests rising and falling in sync.
Sam looked at her, eyes softening. "I didn't realize how much I needed this."
"I did," Alexandra whispered. "I see it in your shoulders. In how you breathe. In how you sleep. You carry the whole company on your back, Sam... but someone has to carry you, too."
Sam swallowed, her eyes glistening—not with sadness, but with something tender and overwhelming. She leaned down and kissed Alexandra slowly, softly, the ocean breeze brushing over their skin.
Later, they settled under the canopy. Alexandra fed Sam pieces of fruit, teasing her with each bite, and Sam returned the favor by smearing a bit of chocolate on Alexandra's lip just so she'd have an excuse to kiss it off.
Music played softly while the sun dipped lower, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink.
Sam rested her head on Alexandra's lap, eyes half-closed. "You spoil me too much."
"I love you too much," Alexandra corrected.
Sam smiled, eyes warm. "Good. Don't stop."
Alexandra's fingers ran through Sam's hair, gentle, deliberate, and warm. Sam felt herself finally relax—truly relax—in a way she hadn't in weeks. Her shoulders unclenched, her chest eased, and for the first time in what felt like forever, the weight pressing on her chest lifted, if only a little.
And for a moment, Sam forgot about everything else—work, deadlines, report, threats. Even the gnawing worry that always seemed to linger at the edges of her mind faded, replaced by the simple, steady reality of Alexandra's touch.
For a moment... it was just them. Just her, Alexandra, the soft press of fingers in her hair, the quiet rhythm of her own heartbeat matching Alexandra's. Just love. Just the sea whispering nearby. Just the gentle sway of the world around them—a world Sam wished she could hold still forever, just long enough to keep this feeling safe and unbroken.
